It should come as no surprise that one of our favorite award shows is the MTV VMAs. Music is a huge part of American Eagle Outfitters, so we’re constantly looking to music influencers for inspiration and, of course, entertainment. The art of the music video is alive and well, if the hype around the MTV Video Music Awards is any indication – and with buzz-worthy videos like Kanye West’s “Famous” to viral hits like Adele’s “Hello,” there’s a reason for everyone to tune in on Sunday night (not to mention the surprise factor we can always expect from an MTV broadcast!). Below, we’re laying out our most-anticipated moments of the night and sharing some musically inspired #AEOSTYLE.
WHAT YOU’LL BE TWEETING ABOUT ON MONDAY
- BRITNEY SPEARS: Brit is back. It’s been 9 years since this pop queen has taken the VMA stage, and we know that Britney’s performances are always talked about (good or bad). This year we have high expectations, especially since she’ll be performing her new single “Make Me” alongside G-Eazy.
- RIHANNA (and Drake?): Rihanna will be honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award at this year’s show and is expected to perform, too. Seeing as Drake is nominated for an award as well (come on, don’t tell us you forgot Hotline Bling already), will the are-they-or-aren’t-they couple collab for a surprise on stage?
- NO T-SWIFT: Wait, what? A VMAs without Taylor Swift? That’s right, your favorite squad leader isn’t attending this year’s awards… but that’s not to say her name still won’t be swirling! With all the Kanye/Kim/Calvin drama, we can’t help but think that Taylor will still have some sort of presence at the event.
- VIDEO OF THE YEAR: Five huge names are pitted against each other for this year’s coveted Video of the Year Moon Man: Adele – “Hello”, Drake – “Hotline Bling”, Beyonce – “Formation”, Justin Bieber – “Sorry” and Kanye West – “Famous”. With talent this big, we can’t wait to see what GIF-worthy drama might happen as the winner takes the stage.
WHAT TO WEAR ON SUNDAY
GUYS: Keep your VMAs style on-trend this year with a bold jacket or bomber and cool leather lace-up sneakers. Add some interest to the look by keeping a monochrome feel thru your t-shirt and jeans. Varying shades and patterns look so fresh and buzz-worthy that you might even convince your friends that you’re “Famous.”
GIRLS: Bold fashion is the name of the game at the Video Music Awards. Don’t be afraid to show off statement-making #AEOSTYLE and throw several trendy pieces into your look. We’re loving this black bodysuit/black denim combo, especially when its elevated with a satin patched bomber jacket. Finish your outfit off with a choker (obviously) and black booties for a look that will show them how you get in “Formation.”
