Meet Brian, a sports enthusiast from Bowie, MD. Learn more about Brian’s experience as part of Project Live Your Life: Miami and follow him on Instagram.

You enjoy being healthy and playing sports. What are your favorite ways to stay active?

I have a weekly workout routine. Besides that, I play pickup games with all my friends, whether it’s basketball, soccer, football, tennis or volleyball.

Who in the athlete world do you admire?

Roger Federer inspired me to pick up tennis. His poise on the court was so natural and pushed me to be the best I could be. One day I hope I can find myself across the net exchanging serves with him before he retires!

What is your inspiration for staying motivated and focused?

Positivity. I always am focused on the next step ahead and never let the negatives in life get me down for an instant. Staying focused on the blessings in my life drives me in my pursuit to achieve success.

You also enjoy cooking. What are your favorite recipes to make?

I’m not one to follow recipes- I see something I like and tweak it to make it my own.

Do you have any cooking traditions?

Being Filipino. all my traditions are from the islands. Getting together with my family and cooking our food reminds me of being home again.

Is this your first time to Miami? What about this city inspires you?

Yes- Miami is alive with culture and excitement. I’m inspired to go out and learn how people from Miami live it up!

You’ve seen Wynwood Walls transform from a blank slate into a work of art. How did you feel during the transformation of the lot?

It feels good contributing to a place in order to make it better. I’m thankful for the opportunity to give back to the city of Miami.

What inspired you to create your part of the mural?

It’s a combination of my life experiences as a whole: where I’m from, where I am now, and where I’m going.

You’re from Bowie, MD. What do you heart about your city?

My city is right on the outskirts of DC. It attracts artistic, outgoing, fun people that create and inspire me. Coming to Bowie, I’ve connected with so many people who just want to have fun and are care free like me. That’s what I love about my city.

Meet the Cast: Sara

Meet the Cast: Sara

Meet Sara, a former pageant participant and accomplished pianist. Sara was one of the winners of American Eagle Outfitters Project Live Your Life and is currently featured in our Spring Break 2014 campaign. Lean more about Sara and be sure to follow her on Instagram for more insight into who she is!

You were born and raised in Maryland. What do you heart about your state?

I heart that Maryland is “America in miniature”. I can see the beautiful landscapes from the beach to the mountains all within a few hours!

You’ve been playing the piano since you were five years old. Tell us about how you got your start.

I have always loved music. When my sister started taking piano lessons I was inspired to as well and have been playing ever since.

What motivates you to play the piano?

I listen to other great pianists which motivates me to practice and get better and whenever I get a really strong emotion that I can’t express, I play it out on the piano.

What are some of the biggest challenges that you’ve had to face while playing the piano?

Playing in front of large audiences is always a nerve racking experience, but I’ve learned through countless performances that even when I make a mistake, I just keep playing.

Where do you volunteer?

I play the piano at nursing homes, hospitals, and fundraising events. It gives me the opportunity to share my time and talents with my community through the gift of music.

I also volunteer at local soup kitchens and homeless shelters in Maryland. It’s something I care strongly about because every human being deserves the necessities of food, shelter and clothing in order to pursue a happy life.

Who inspires you to volunteer?

All the people that have made a positive impact on my life inspire me because that has shown me that I can make a difference in others’ lives as well.

How do you feel when you volunteer?

I feel humble and happy knowing I am putting a smile on someone’s face and helping them overcome their struggles.

What makes you stand out from the crowd? What characteristics help tell your story?

I am compassionate. It has always been in my nature to be kind and caring which motivates me to help people as a volunteer, a friend and one day, a music teacher.

We also hear that you’ve done pageants. What have you learned from them?

Competing in pageants has given me the opportunity to express my opinions, showcase my talent, and has taught me leadership, the importance of service and most of all, confidence in myself.

What are some of your aspirations?

I aspire to be a music teacher, to master the piano and to be Miss America.

Tell us about your part of the mural. What inspired you to create what you did?

On one side I drew about a dozen stars. Watching the stars in the night sky is something I enjoy and find absolutely beautiful. Stars are the light in the darkness and whenever my life seems bleak I always try to find that positive light that can overcome it.

On the other side I wrote my Chinese name in Mandarin. My grandparents gave me that name and it reminds me how important the Chinese culture is to me and how it is a part of me and I hope to become fluent in the language and travel to China once again to experience its beauty.

We hear you love music. What is it about music that you love most?

Picking up an instrument and manipulating it to make amazing sounds is what I love most about music.

What is your favorite instrument to play?

Guitar is my favorite instrument to play. I love carrying it around and singing along with friends.

Are there any instruments that you don’t know how to play but want to learn?

Saxophone is an instrument I’ve always wanted to explore. It has such a soothing sound.

Do you write your own music? What inspires your lyrics?

I haven’t written any music yet, but I aspire to definitely write something in the near future.

You also like sports. What kind of adventure sports are you into?

I like all sports, but my favorite would have to be soccer. I play almost every popular sport out there.

How did you start getting into adventure sports?

I started playing soccer when I was 10 and I have been fascinated ever since.

How do you feel when you’re active in these sports?

I feel like it’s an art where I can paint a picture and it’ll be engraved into people’s minds. For example, if I make a great save while I’m goalkeeper, people will remember me for that. I would have also contributed to my team’s success.

Are there any adventure sports athletes that inspire you?

My favorite goalkeeper is Iker Casillas. He plays for the Spanish national team. I like him because he is a well balanced human being: he is an accomplished, professional athlete as well as a philanthropist.

Are there any sports that you haven’t tried that you want to get into?

I would like to try out lacrosse. It seems like a very technical sport and I love challenges.

What characteristics make you unique? What makes you stand out from the crowd?

I’m very humorous and I love meeting new people. I like making people comfortable around me and sparking up conversations with complete strangers.

What inspires you to get to know and learn about others?

I’m a very curious person. I like learning about others because I get a fundamental understanding about people. I want to learn and meet as many people as humanely possible. I also see learning as a never ending process and I see it as an opportunity to growing as an individual.

Meet the Cast: Adria

Meet the Cast: Adria

Meet Adria, an artist from St. Pete Beach, Florida who is featured in our Spring Break 2014 campaign. You may remember Adria from our Spring 2014 campaign as well as Episode 2 of Project Live Your Life: San Francisco, where she helped design a T-shirt to be produced and sold by American Eagle Outfitters. Read on to learn more about her.

How does it feel to be back for another AEO photo shoot?

To come back for another shoot is definitely a blessing. Knowing that more memories will be made with people that I have formed bonds with makes me smile. I’m so thankful to have been given these amazing opportunities and can only hope that there is more to come in the future.

What are some of the challenges and emotions that you have faced while being a part of Project Live Your Life? Was it a lot of pressure designing a T-shirt for us?

One of the biggest challenges I faced while being a part of Project Live Your Life was getting past being shy. Everyone has a blast just being their crazy selves, so it’s nice to know that you can let go and be yourself without feeling judged. In the designing aspect, I would say that it was stressful feeling like I had to conform my art to fit what I thought the brand was about. However, when I realized that they still wanted me to show myself through my designs it was a freeing and relieving feeling.

Is this your first time in Miami? How does this city differ from your home town?

This was my first REAL trip to Miami. The other times I’ve been in Miami were for only a day or so. St. Pete Beach is such a chill relaxed beach town, whereas Miami is full of life and color.

What do you heart about your city of St. Pete Beach, FL?

I heart going to the beach where I can forget all my worries and have fun with friends and family.

What inspires you to draw?

I never really thought about what inspires me to draw. It sounds weird saying it, but I think my drawings are sparked from a feeling. Whether it’s a song I hear, or a person I meet, something about that moment makes me want to pick up a pen and create.

What has been the most challenging piece of art that you’ve created?

Every drawing is a challenge. If I’m not pushing myself in each piece, what’s the point? I think that challenging yourself helps you get to where you want to be.

How do you feel when you’re doing art?

To explain how I feel when I draw is like asking someone to explain what love is. When I draw, I lose myself. I can escape reality, and run away with each stroke of the pen. Knowing that I can create something amazing while doing something I love is a feeling unparalleled.

We’ve heard you want to travel and do unexpected things. Where do you want to travel first?

I’m a strong believer in thinking that you learn the most through travel and experience. I would love to go somewhere in Europe. The culture, history and food… it  would be a dream destination!

What is your process when staring at a blank canvas?

I think the first thing I would do when staring at a blank canvas is find an emotion. Finding an emotional connection between you and what you want to draw makes it all the more real. I also prefer to use only black and white in my drawings. I feel like using color is cheating. When you look at certain colors, your emotions change. I want people to find their own emotion in my drawings and not be influenced by an outside force.

What makes you real?

You can’t live your life dependent on what others think of you. If you want to be happy, be happy. If you want to do something, do it for yourself and not because someone told you to. I think being myself, as well as doing what I love and doing it for the right reasons, is what makes me real.

Who or what empowers you to take on the day?

The fact that I have full control over who I become and where I go in life empowers me to take on the day.
