No scare don’t care… our top 10 Halloween traditions

Happy Halloween! In our opinion, today is the most fun day of the year (and obviously the scariest). We’ve rounded up 10 of the top Halloween traditions for you… so we hope you’re ready to get spooked.

Read Christine by Stephen King
There’s a ton of Halloween-ready lore out there, and Stephen King is its master. While Christine might be considered tame by some (or, okay, most), this tale of a car that comes to life and kills everyone in its wake is still pretty terrifying. (And now we have absolutely no desire to ever name our cars again.)

Eat Halloween Themed Treats
Type “Halloween food” into Pinterest and you’ll have your pick of scary goodness to choose from. We had a tough time deciding on our favorite treat, but we ended up going with Boo Sushi… because how on earth are you going to be able to come up with something more creative than sushi rolls topped with body parts?

Download The Zombie Me App
Especially suited to those who love The Walking Dead, but come on… anyone can have a little (too much) fun turning their normal, everyday pictures into scary zombified creatures. It’s pretty much the best reason to take a selfie today.

Watch Scary Horror Movies
Whether you hide under a blanket on the couch or brave the theater, there is absolutely no better time to watch a scary movie than on Halloween night. There are a few new releases to choose from this year, but we’re going with Annabelle… because there’s really nothing more frightening than a doll connected to the supernatural. (And while this movie has been banned in parts of France, we’re not too scared to watch it. We think.)

Watch Campy Horror Movies
If you’re in the mood to laugh more than scream this Halloween, you HAVE to watch Hocus Pocus. The cult classic stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Midler and Kathy Najimy as three witches who come back from the dead to terrorize a small, sleepy town. While you probably won’t be too scared by this movie, it’s still definitely a must see.

Do The “Thriller” Dance
Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” is at the top of every Halloween music playlist, and for good reason. The music video is one of the best of all time, in large part to the infamous dance sequence. Get ready to bust a move.

Carve A Pumpkin
What would Halloween be without pumpkin carving? It’s the best way to show off your artistic skills (or, okay, how all you can do is cut triangles for eyes). Be sure to scoop out the seeds and roast them, too (we recommend doing so with a bit of garlic olive oil and a pinch of sea salt).

Go On A Hayride
Bundle up, drink some cider and grab your friends for a hayride on a crisp fall night. Bonus points if it’s through a haunted graveyard.

Wear A Costume
This one might be obvious, but we’re including it anyway… because Halloween just isn’t Halloween without a costume. Think beyond the typical cat, witch or ghost this year by dressing up like your favorite celebrities.

Visit A Haunted House
This is hands down one of our favorite annual traditions. Getting spooked is, yes, scary… but isn’t that the point? Just be sure you’re ready to scream.

7 things we love…

After an exhausting (but amazing!) weekend at the Budweiser Made in America music festival, we’re back with another roundup that we put together just for you of all the things inspiring us right now, from what we’re reading and eating to what we’re wearing and listening to. Let us know what you think about our picks in the comments—and give us yours, too!

WHAT WE’RE WEARING: DR. MARTENS
They’re been a cult classic for decades… and for good reason. Docs, as they’re more colloquially known, bring together every subculture from emo to punk. We’re super excited to be featuring them on our site for the very first time, and we’re totally digging the iconic 1460s in bold floral for girls and rugged leather for guys.

WHAT WE’RE EATING: COCONUT OIL, HONEY AND SEA SALT POPCORN
Is there anything better or more delicious than a bag of freshly popped popcorn? We think not. Snuggle up on the couch for a movie marathon with a bag of this tasty treat, which is not only super easy to make but perfect for savory and sweet lovers alike with its mix of coconut oil, honey and Himalayan pink sea salt.

WHAT WE’RE READING: DOROTHY MUST DIE BY DANIELLE PAIGE
The Wizard of Oz is one of those stories that seems to pop up in everyday conversation at least once. Think about it. Well, this book spins the story into a whole new tornado with its lead character, Amy Gumm, whose sole mission after being recruited by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked is to—you guessed it—make sure everyone’s favorite Ruby Slippers-wearing heroine, well, dies.

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING: CANDIDLY NICOLE
We’ve been fairly obsessed with Nicole Richie ever since she first appeared on The Simple Life with Paris Hilton. And ever since, her various clothing and accessory lines have catapulted her into fashion super stardom (not to mention the fact that she constantly sets beauty trends). But it’s this show, with gems like her dad (yes, the one and only Lionel Richie) trying to teach her how to parallel park, that has us loving her more than ever.

WHAT WE’RE DOWNLOADING: THE B612 APP BY LINE
Let’s “face” it… everyone takes selfies. Well, this app, which uses only your phone’s front-facing camera, is out to change them for the good, better, best. You can take a photo by touching any part of the screen and perfect it with 43 different photo filters. Oh, and it doesn’t make a shutter sound, so no one has to know what you’re really up to while you hold your phone in front of your face. Now come on, #letstakeaselfie.

WHAT WE’RE LISTENING TO: ANOTHER STORY BY THE HEAD AND THE HEART
Melancholy. Sweet. Romantic. Endearing. This song is all that and more. You know the quirky love story, Juno? That’s what this indie folk band from Seattle makes us think of every time we play it.

WHERE WE’RE GOING: THE JERSEY SHORE
Summer may be officially over, but we’re pretending it isn’t with one last trip to the beach. Whether you want to party like your favorite (least favorite?) friends from MTV’s now-kaput show or not, the Jersey Shore offers a little something for everyone. Spend a day at Six Flags Great Adventure, take in a minor league baseball game, visit a lighthouse, go out to the clubs, stroll up and down the boardwalk, just relax on the beach… it’s pretty obvious you’re bound to have a good time no matter what.

7 things we love…

Welcome to this week’s edition of 7 Things We Love! Get inspired by all the things inspiring US right now, from what we’re reading and eating to what we’re wearing and listening to. Let us know what you think about our picks in the comments —and give us yours, too!

WHAT WE’RE WEARING: STAR PRINTED SNEAKERS
Get a little patriotic with your #AEOSTYLE by slipping a pair of star-printed sneakers on your feet! Whether you go for slip-ons or chukkas, this trend is all red, white and you.

WHAT WE’RE EATING: SALT & STRAW ICE CREAM
Let’s face it—nothing says summer like a big scoop of ice cream. But we’re not talking your typical, run of the mill vanilla here. Portland’s Salt & Straw ice cream is handmade in small batches with 17 percent butterfat, all-natural dairy, organic and local ingredients (with a few imported flavors thrown in for good measure). They had us at Chocolate Chip Mint Julep and Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbon.

WHAT WE’RE READING: ELEANOR & PARK BY RAINBOW ROWELL
Honestly? We’re loving this book for the cover alone. It’s just a bonus that this story of two star-crossed teens who meet in 1986 and bond over their mutual love of comic books is SO. FREAKING. GOOD. This is the book EVERYONE is reading right now, so don’t be left out. (Oh, and The Fault in Our Stars’ very own John Green wrote a glowing review of it in The New York Times, so there’s that.)

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING: TAMMY
It seems Melissa McCarthy can do no wrong. Her latest movie centers around a character who loses her job and finds out her husband has been cheating on her. Doesn’t sound like the most uplifting start, sure… but something tells us McCarthy’s physical comedy will find a way to give people more than a few laughs.

WHAT WE’RE DOWNLOADING: THE NEW EMOJI LIST
All right, so these aren’t TECHNICALLY available yet, but we’re chomping at the bit to get our fingers on all new emojis for our texts and Instagram posts. A few of the gems include a sports medal, chipmunk, candle, crayon and a wind blowing face.

WHAT WE’RE LISTENING TO: HUNGER OF THE PINE BY ALT-J
Indie rock band Alt-J isn’t only cool because they’re from England. They have a way of drawing you in with their mesmerizingly awesome beats. This song in particular is tranquil with an edgy vibe and just a little mysterious. (Oh, and it includes Miley Cyrus on a loop. So there’s that.)

WHERE WE’RE GOING: BOSTON
There really isn’t a better place to celebrate the 4th than in one of our most patriotic cities. Boston is home to the Freedom Trail, which includes everything from Old North Church (which, hint hint, played a major part in the American Revolution) and the beautiful Boston Common. But what we’re most excited for is the annual Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular, which takes place on the Esplanade at the Charles River and includes the concert and one of the most awesome fireworks displays you can possibly imagine. If you need a quick bite, stop at Spike’s for a Junkyard Dog—be sure to get one with a pickle spear inside the bun.

7 Things We Love…

Here at AEO, we’re inspired by so many different things. Food, travel, music, movies… you name it, the sky’s the limit! We’re starting a new series on the blog where you can see all of our inspirations—and maybe get a little inspired yourself. Here’s the first installment of what we can’t live without.

WHAT WE’RE LISTENING TO: KEEP YOU BY WILD BELLE
We’re digging this song from Wild Belle’s debut album, Isles. Chicago natives (and siblings!) Elliot and Natalie Bergman have created the perfect mix of indie rock and funk. This track’s addictive sound will definitely have you playing it again and again and again and… well, you get the point.

WHAT WE’RE DOWNLOADING: TRAKTOR DJ
Have big dreams of being a DJ? Well, it’s now easier than ever (and totally at your fingertips) with this awesome app. Choose from eight different effects like Beatmasher, Filter and Flanger to cut up and rearrange beats, create quick cuts and more. Plus, you can use it on your iPad or iPhone!

WHERE WE’RE GOING: DENVER
Looking for a place to celebrate Cinco de Mayo? Denver boasts one of the largest celebrations in the US. The two-day festival includes live music and all the authentic Mexican cuisine you can handle. Work off all the tacos by taking advantage of the city’s hiking trails and mountain terrain.

WHAT WE’RE READING: THE FAULT IN OUR STARS BY JOHN GREEN
It’s only one of the most popular YA books to come out in the past five years. This story about two teenage cancer patients who find each other and fall in love is a tearjerker, for sure… but it’s also full of hope and the appreciation of living life to the fullest. Not to mention the movie, which stars Divergent’s Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, is only one of the most anticipated movie releases of the year (it comes out on June 6).

WHAT WE’RE EATING: SMOOTHIE BOWLS
The weather’s heating up (finally) (we think?) and that has us craving colder foods. Smoothie bowls are the cousin of acai bowls, which are a Brazilian treat made from frozen acai pulp blended with other frozen fruit and topped with fresh sliced fruit, granola and honey. But since acai is a little hard to find, try a smoothie bowl—all you need is spinach, avocado, and whatever frozen fruit you have in the freezer! Mmm, mmm good.

WHAT WE’RE WEARING: AE SOFT FLORAL JUMPSUIT
The oversized floral print. The mismatched pockets. The bold black and white. The silhouette. Everything about this jumpsuit just screams “I’m right on trend for spring!” It’s really just a bonus that it’s incredibly comfy, too.

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING: MEAN GIRLS ON NETFLIX
This movie totally made fetch happen. We kind of can’t believe it’s 10 years old already. This classic just never goes out of style. Thanks to Netflix, we’re watching the antics of the Plastics over and over again and quoting all the memorable lines nonstop. A few of our favorites: “On Wednesdays, we wear pink.” “That’s why her hair is so big. It’s full of secrets.” “Whatever. I’m getting cheese fries.” “You go, Glenn Coco!”
