#AerieREAL girl Elana shares her journey to loving the swim she’s in!

“In my years since college, I have gone through a major inner transformation — from feeling like I had to dress myself to feel confident, to learning to embrace + celebrate my body whether I’m naked or in one of my favorite bikinis! After college, as I started my business, I did a lot of soul searching and began to find that I wasn’t focused on just being the ‘pretty’ girl that I wanted to be when I was young. As young girls, many of us are focused on our outer appearances to feel confident and beautiful. Now, I realized I wanted to be the successful entrepreneur, the empowering friend, the smart woman, the risk taker — the vibrantly alive soul. With this realization, I found how little my body type, shape or size was tied into ANY of my goals. . . It wasn’t an overnight switch, but instead a conscious effort to understand that my worth wasn’t tied to the way my body looked and also, that women I found beautiful, sexy and dazzling didn’t all look one certain way. They were different sizes, skin colors, body types and ages.

Moving to Hawai’i to  has been a huge part of my shift towards body positivity and self love! Since moving here, I have learned what true beauty is, why size doesn’t matter (even in a cheeky bikini) and how to be truly confident in your skin! Now, I find myself sharing pep talks on my Instagram because I see such a need for the conversation that Aerie is having with the #AerieREAL campaign! We need less body shaming and more self love. More understanding that YES our bodies are beautiful, but also, that our worth doesn’t equate to our outside appearance.”

“Before moving to Hawai’i, I would find myself dressing my body in order to feel confident or thinking ‘I would look good in that if I didn’t have these love handles.’ Yet here in Hawai’i, after a lot of self-discovery, I’ve found myself seeing my body not as a defining factor of who I am as a person, but instead as the vessel that allows me to live life; to experience so much. So next time you’re putting on a bikini or slipping into a pair of hiking shorts – instead of wishing that your body didn’t look the way it does, remember to be thankful that your body is enabling you to try surfing for the first time, or hike that mountain or experience whatever we’re about to experience. I find with women across the board: women who are smaller, plus size women, women who are in between, women who are aging, or new moms — every woman has imperfections and something they don’t view as perfect. And guess what? That’s okay. We’re humans and we’re beautiful — in this moment — the way we look + feel RIGHT NOW. When you make the mental shift to view your body through a lens of gratitude, our cellulite, love handles or lack of a booty seem to fade away.”

“Two years ago, when we packed up all of our belongings and moved to this little island in the sea, I had a wildly different perspective on size and the role it played in the value of my body or myself. When we first moved here we would frequent the beach, still feeling like we were on vacation; I was still in complete awe and kept thinking, ‘Do we really live here?’ (YES, Elana. HELL YES you do.) On those beach trips, I would notice women in cheeky bikinis that weren’t perfectly tiny or sculpted – SHOCKING! I was so inspired by their “courage” because I always felt that to dawn a swimsuit and feel comfortable you had to have zero cellulite and have tiny little thighs. Swimwear never made me feel comfortable, let alone beautiful! Women in Hawai’i wear what they want with pride in their bodies and it’s been absolutely inspiring! Experiencing their confidence first hand first made my smile, then started sinking in more and more. I started looking at my body differently and started to love my curves more, my smaller chest, my imperfect but perfectly strong legs. Everything around me told me that size does not matter, that you’re beautiful just the way you are. I started the inner work that it takes to have outer confidence!

I thought to be sexy you had to look a certain way, act a certain way, dress a certain way. You had to look like the sculpted, made up, photoshopped images that you see across glossy magazine pages. Hawai’i has given me a whole different perspective on what ‘sexy’ looks like. It’s made me realize sexy is strength, it’s courage, it’s fully owning your story and being proud of who you are. Sexy looks like women celebrating themselves, inside and out,  and rocking the bikini now (not five pounds from now)! Having a good sense of humor, not taking yourself too seriously, quick wit — this is sexy.  I find it sexy to show up to life with confidence!”

“Beautiful women are happy women…not the other way around! We’ve heard this messaging in advertising but after being on this island for many moons now, Hawai’i has truly opened my eyes and enlightened me on this. When I first moved here, I would only notice gals on the beach who had these tiny, fit, perky bodies. I would look down at my very friendly thighs, always rubbing up on one another, and my soft belly that rolled when I sat down – not hating what I saw, but not owning it as fully beautiful. Slowly, beach trip after beach trip, I started to notice something different. Something incredible. I started to notice that the most beautiful women were the happy ones. They were the girls splashing around in the waves with their sisters, not glued to their phone. Or the mamas playing with their little ones as the waves kissed their ankles. Or the women jumping up to spike the volleyball back where it came from. The greatest beauty on the beach was those fully engaging in life! And they came in all sizes, ages, colors and body types.

Hawai’i has taught me many things, but mostly, that life is about so much more than our imperfections. There is so much to experience and explore in this world and deciding to start your journey to self love RIGHT NOW is our key to it all! Don’t deny yourself another day of joy, of acceptance, of confidence. You are an incredible, beautiful woman inside and out! You deserve to be celebrated! So here I am, cheersing you from the big island — encouraging you to take a lesson from the beautiful islands of Hawai’i. You are worthy of self love + respect right here, right now!”

#AerieREAL Love From Iskra: Beach Bag Essentials

Hey Aerie girls,

It’s finally feeling like summer is here, so I wanted to share my Beach Bag Essentials with you 🙂

In June I’ll be taking my yearly trip and this time I plan on heading somewhere in Europe – maybe Santorini then onto a beach vacay hopefully in the Caribbean like Turks and Caicos. Eeekk so excited!

So I’m going to make sure I pack very carefully as I tend to overdo everything and end up not wearing half of my clothes. This year I’m thinking of planning day by day, so literally writing out each day I’m away in numbers then deciding the type of outfit I need for the different days. So for days I’m flying I’m going to need my sweatpants!

#AerieREAL Love From Iskra: Beach Bag Essentials

Here’s my overview of what I’m taking away with me this summer:

  • Sunnies!!! OK so I don’t know why but I’m pretty forgetful especially with sunglasses yet they are so important so they will literally be the first I pack and the Aerie flower shades are super fun and I will also want to take a mirror pair as I love that look.
  • Bright happy bikini so I feel happy and confident on the beach! I try on a ton of swim to make sure I get a two piece I feel secure and sexy in so I just enjoy being on the beach.
  • A cute coverup that I can throw on over my swim at the beach, or a scarf when it cools down in the evenings.#AerieREAL Love From Iskra: Beach Bag Essentials
  • I love having a hat on holiday that can finish off an outfit and doubles up to protect my face, hair and neck!
  • A good pair of shorts that can be worn casually, over swim or even dressed up for a cool outfit. I personally love these stretchy grey pair as they are super comfy and easy to wear as well as the on trend lace up detail.
  • I take a ton of easy tees on trips. I’m all about comfort and I usually need to cover up my shoulders because i burn so easily :O
  • Usually I use perfume daily but when I’m on vacay I want something lighter and fresher so I tend to use a body spray which I will spritz throughout the day to keep smelling yummy lol.
  • Finally a new addition to my beach bag is going to be a cute purse / wallet but one that’s big enough to keep my money safe and my bits and bobs like keys / lip balm / sunnies and that way I’m going to be able to find those essentials more easily in my bag and it can double up as a cute clutch bag at night too 🙂

#AerieREAL Love From Iskra: Beach Bag Essentials

I hope you enjoyed finding out what’s going in my beach bag! I hope you all have a wonderful summer and make sure you tag your unretouched swim pics with #AerieReal. I want to see them!

Lots of love,

Iskra xxx

Love the Swim You’re In with Rae Everyday

#AerieREAL girl Raeann of Rae Everyday shares how she learned to love the swim she’s in!

“I was invited to a pool party in the third grade for a classmate’s birthday. From the moment I received the invitation, I could barely contain my excitement. Swimming was always one of my favorite activities. The day of the party arrived and I slipped into my blue one-piece swimsuit that I wore for swim practice and dashed to the pool to join the other girls playing mermaids, although the fun didn’t last long. My excitement was quickly shattered when one of the girls at the party said I looked like the Michelin Man. At first, I didn’t understand. Why would she tell me this? Surely, my nine-year-old body didn’t resemble the Michelin Man whose body was made of well, tires, that created large roles from head to toe.”

Love the Swim You're In with Rae Everyday

“From that day forward, I began to believe the hurtful words that were said to me. I would stare at my reflection and ask myself why I was so fat and why I didn’t look like the other girls in my class. Every single day I would wake up and say, I’m going to start losing weight today. This lasted throughout my teenage years. When I was in high school if I knew we would be around a pool or a hot tub I would purposely “forget” my swimsuit because I couldn’t bare the thought of someone seeing me in a swimsuit. Looking back now, it makes me sad that I let my insecurities about my body hold me back in life.”Love the Swim You're In with Rae Everyday

“At 5 foot 10 inches tall and a size 12/14, I am much larger than most women and I felt like a monster compared the women I grew up seeing in the glossy pages of magazines. My journey of accepting my body and loving myself has not been an easy one. For me, seeing women of all sizes in the media like Ashley Graham, Iskra Lawrence, and many others has been a huge factor in loving the parts of my body I once hated. I had to intentionally change my way of thinking about my body. I started by focusing on the things I loved about my body rather than the things I hated. Yes, my stomach rolls over my jeans when I sit down and my thighs are sprinkled with cellulite, but this body is what gives me life and it’s beautiful! My size does not define who I am as a person and that took me a long time to realize.”

“I’m excited to partner with Aerie as part of their #AerieReal campaign. Aerie was one of the first major brands to take a stance against retouched images and promoting an unrealistic body image for women. Aerie made a decision to showcase their models in their natural, unretouched state. They spread the conversation with the #AerieReal campaign, encouraging women to share images of their photoshop-free bodies.”

Love the Swim You're In with Rae Everyday

“I want to thank Aerie for allowing me to be a part of their #AerieReal campaign and for spreading body positivity and helping young girls and women find their confidence. I truly believe that Aerie has been a trailblazer in evoking conversations about unhealthy body standards in the fashion industry. It’s about time that we shatter the false and unrealistic beauty standards we have been surrounded by for far too long.”Love the Swim You're In with Rae Everyday

Love the Swim You’re in with Anastasia Ashley

Professional surfer and #AerieREAL girl Anastasia Ashley gets REAL about her commitment to not retouching her photos. Love the Swim You're in with Anastasia Ashley

“I am a surfer and my swimsuit is my uniform.

I’ve never felt the need to photoshop my pictures because I am comfortable in my body. Maybe it is because I am always in a swimsuit and it is just natural for me but I think it is because I don’t spend hours in the gym killing myself, or starving myself or more importantly, I don’t compare myself to other women and their shapes and sizes. If I did, I would end up obsessing over things that don’t matter, like whether I am too muscular, It would be an endless cycle of disappointment and  everyone can get stuck in this evil, negative cycle. When we should really take that time to do more productive things for ourselves and each other. To live a happy and healthy life.”

Love the Swim You're in with Anastasia Ashley

“As a woman, I think one of the biggest threats against women is brought on by both big companies in their advertising, but more importantly and more dangerously by other women through their social media, with the aggressive retouching of photos.

We have to be aware that the social media isn’t real life and what we see is always through a filter. We also have to know who our audience is and that people are watching. We have a responsibility to send a positive message. We can’t give girls unrealistic expectations of what a body should look like, because a body really shouldn’t like anything other than what your body looks like.”
