#AEOSTYLE Challenge Denim Edition: Slim

We believe in one-of-a-kind fits, not one size fits all… so we put our blood, sweat and tears into designing the best fits for you. This season, we’re highlighting real bloggers in each of our denim fits to give you styling inspiration.

Ryan Charchian from The Fashionisto Diaries is wearing our Slim Jean this season. Our Slim Jean is about to be your new favorite fit… lean, versatile and perfect for someone who prefers slim but not skinny.

What inspired Ryan’s look:
American Eagle Outfitters has a ton of great pieces to go back to school with. I paired this tribal print baseball tee with light wash slim jeans to show the contrast of the pieces. The slim jeans are also very comfortable if you aren’t in a skinny jean kind of mood for class. This backpack is really big and I’ll be able to carry my laptop and textbooks with me no problem.

At school, shoes make a statement. These camo-like New Balances really stand out with the bright “N,” which also matches the baseball tee.

#OOTD: Intern Style

Internship season is in full swing! Luckily for us at AE and Aerie HQ, it’s casual Friday every day…which means we get to wear our favorite Aerie pieces 24/7! But getting your casual looks from a 9AM meeting to dinner with friends can be a challenge. We already knew our merchandising interns have great fashion sense, but mastering the ability to show off their personal style while keeping it professional? They’ve got it down to a science.

Get to know some of our Aerie and AE merchandising interns, and find some major outfit inspiration in how they rocked their favorite new Aerie pieces.

Name: Chelsea S.
Hometown: Jacksonville, Florida
College: University of North Florida
Major: Marketing
What I’ve learned interning: “It’s amazing how much my voice is valued here. All members of your team look to you for fresh ideas since as an intern, you are the target customer. I love being able to influence decisions with my knowledge and opinions. At the same time, you have to accept that as an intern, you don’t have all the answers.”
More about me: “I’ve worked in an Aerie store as a bra expert back home for 2 years!”
Why we love her look: Chelsea’s denim vest is perfect for a little coverage around the office – plus, layers are key for unpredictable air conditioning! She kept it casual and cool with dressed down sandals. The topknot is a no-fuss way to top off her look!

Name: Kristen P.
Hometown: Griffith, Indiana
College: Indiana University
Major: Apparel Merchandising, Minor in Business and Fashion Design
What I’ve learned interning: “Moving to a new town and a new company is a big change! It can be challenging to get adjusted, but it’s a fun learning process.”
More about me: “When studying abroad, I visited 24 cities in 10 different countries!”
Why we love her look: Kristen’s hat and strappy heels put an urban spin on a cute critter print! We’d wear this outfit for a big presentation or meeting – Kristen’s style would definitely help put our best foot forward.

Name: Ali G.
Hometown: Winnetka, Il
College: Indiana University
Major: Apparel Merchandising
What I’ve learned interning: “It’s been an amazing experience seeing everything that goes into getting product in the stores, and seeing how styles I think would do well perform every week. I’ve also been surprised how even though everyone is really nice, young, and fun, they work super hard and all are amazing at their jobs.”
More about me: “At home I live on the lake, so I’ve also started to take up a hobby in paddleboarding! It’s super fun, relaxing, and also good exercise.”
Why we love her look: We love Ali’s glam and girly style! Her accessories add a bit of edge, but she keeps it pretty with easy, beachy waves. A light sweater also makes her look workplace appropriate. We’ll say it again – layering is key!

Name: Megan L.
Hometown: Elizabeth, PA
College: University of Pittsburgh
Major: Marketing & Supply Chain Management
What I’ve learned interning: “My favorite part of the internship is that I am encouraged to use my creativity and think outside the box. It is amazing to wake up every morning to go do something I am passionate about! The most surprising part of the internship for me is that each associate you meet really wants you to succeed. This program places success right at your fingertips, you just have to grab it!”
More about me: “I have read the book Looking for Alaska over 10 times.”
Why we love her look: Megan’s outfit is comfy, but still pulled together. This look is perfect for 9 to 5 – and beyond! Just toss on a great pair of heels and you’re ready for your post-work evening plans.

Name: Ellie S.
Hometown: Indianapolis, IN
College: Indiana University
Major: Marketing and Apparel Merchandising
What I’ve learned interning: “The Back to School season, in my opinion, is the best part of the year! It has been so exciting to see all of our hard work pay off with HUGE denim sales. It has definitely been challenging to learn every detail of each pair of jeans, from the fit to the exact wash…but now, after weeks of working with the product, it’s so fun to help my friends find the perfect pair of AE jeans!”
More about me: “I just studied abroad in Milan, Italy for five months! When I was there I learned how to make homemade pasta, gnocchi and tons of different sauces.”
Why we love her look: This cute boho style feels so fresh and fun! While it’s perfect for summertime, the pretty jewel tone colors also make it a great transition look to take you between the fall and summer seasons.

Name: Kelsey B.
Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA
College: University of Notre Dame
Major: Marketing & International Business
What I’ve learned interning: “All the financial metrics and ratios that are specific to the retail industry. College accounting classes can’t prepare you for this!!”
More about me: “I once spent an entire summer living out of a tent and hiking in Oregon & Washington!”
Why we love her look: Some days when we’re running out the door, a sneaker is the only shoe that will do. Plus, this graphic fleece is the perfect solution for those days when you just need to be comfy, but still cute. Kelsey’s taking tomboy to the next level with this look!

Name: Kristin S.
Hometown: Richmond, VA
College: University Of Virginia
Major: Media Studies
What I’ve learned interning: “How much it has taught me about the working world as well as about who I am and what I like.”
More about me: “One quirky fact about me is that I am OBSESSED with astrology!”
Why we love her look: Kristen’s look is flirty, but still super office appropriate! We love the Aerie Jumpsuit paired with a fun platform heel for a little bit of a dressier look. This is a style we’d wear to work, but totally rock on the weekends, too!

Name: Natalia C.
Hometown: Cincinnati, OH
College: Anderson University
Major: Marketing and Spanish
What I’ve learned interning: “It’s definitely been a challenge getting familiar with all of our Aerie undies choices…there are so many! But probably my favorite part has been getting to see product before it comes out!”
More about me: “It’s my second year interning at AE!”
Why we love her look: Her style is totally sporty chic, from her jacket to her wedge sneakers! We love how her bold berry lip adds some extra color and a feminine touch to her style (plus, it matches her bralette)! Natalia’s got the laws of layering down – a pretty bralette or bandeau peeking out from under a tank can act as an amazing accessory!

Name: Taylor J.
Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA
College: Kent State University
Major: Fashion Merchandising
What I’ve learned interning: “So much planning goes into every single style, and it takes place so far in advance! Also, our opinions are valued, so it’s important to stay strong in your point of view when presenting to higher-ups!”
More about me: “My favorite things to do in my free time are practicing yoga and hanging out with my friends and family.”
Why we love her look: Who says you can’t wear your comfiest pants to work, and still look amazing? Taylor’s style is so downtown cool! We love how she dressed up her basic look with some fun heels and a statement necklace. Joggers are a great alternative to your favorite jeans when you feel like mixing it up!

The amazingly talented photographer, Annie Frame

Love our graphic T-shirts? So do we! And we have an extra bonus for you… an interview with the photographer behind two of this season’s T’s: Annie Frame! Get to know this super cool Brooklyn based photographer in our exclusive interview with her below!

Tell us about yourself?
“I grew up in Boston, Massachusetts and moved to Brooklyn, New York five years ago to pursue art and find adventure.”

What is your favorite photograph you have taken and why?
“I can’t say I have a favorite, because it’s always changing and there’s just too many to choose from, but I always love photographing my friends above all else. [Mostly], the simple things, having picnics, going to shows, dancing, laughing, it’s the little things in life, and the people you get to share it with.”

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

What inspires your photography?
“Actually, movies and music inspire my photographs greatly. It really helps me get into a mood, and that makes me imagine me what I want the photo to look like. That and I walk around the city and meet new interesting people every day.”

We featured two of your images on our graphic T-shirts this season; can you tell us the story behind the images and what it means to you to have these sold in AEO stores and online?
“First of all, absolutely thrilled to be on an AEO shirt! The first image, the one of two girls dancing was taken at a show that my friend’s band was playing at. They were in the front having a lot of fun and they seemed so free. I asked them if it was okay for me to take their pictures and they said “sure!” Later I found out they were best friends, and were both professional dancers as well. The other image is of my cat. His name is “little man” and he looks grumpy all the time, but he secretly loves to snuggle.”

“The best city I’ve ever visited is New York City. It was the best then; it’s still the best now. But Tokyo, Japan is definitely top on my list to.”

Tell us one thing about yourself that no one would guess about you?
“I play the drums and I love to dance. I even have a tattoo professing my love for these things.”

Interview: The Wind and the Wave

Austin, TX is known for live music. In fact, you can’t walk down Sixth Street without being pulled into a bar by the sounds of guitar riffs and kick drums. Trust us, we’ve tried. But that being said, the city is obviously a hotbed for burgeoning talent in the rock and country arena. Enter, The Wind & the Wave – an Austin-based duo that charmed their way into our hearts when they stopped through Pittsburgh on their tour with the Jameston Revival. Get to know more about Patty Lynn and Dwight Baker and listen to a song from their new LP!

Windandwave 3

I like your tattoo.

KM:  Oh, thanks. It’s a celtic knot.

Dwight:  Are you Scottish?

KM:  No, I’m a bit Irish.

Dwight:  We played in Ireland.

KM:  That’s so cool, tell me about it!

Patty:  We went on a tour with a band called Stereophonics. They’re huge over there. So we were on their US/Canada tour.

Dwight:  Yeah, we played Ireland, Scotland and mainland Great Britain.

KM:  Tell me about how you found each other and became a band.

Patty:  I was in another band and I was living in Austin. And he came out to see somebody that my band was opening for. And liked what he heard, I guess.

Dwight:  I just thought you were pretty. No, I loved what I heard. She’s got an enchanting voice. It’s magic.

Patty:  And so after that, my band built a relationship with him. He has a really nice studio in Austin. We made a couple records with him. And then through that process, we just became friends. We just enjoyed each other’s company. Definitely more so than I enjoyed the company of my bandmates. It was just kind of a natural thing that happened.

Dwight:  And then she quit her band. And I had a break in my schedule so we started writing together and it became that record very quickly. Then three months after that, we signed to RCA. It was very weird and very quick.

KM:  That is quick. So you’ve been a band for about a year?

Dwight:  Yeah, I think we’re at about 18 months. It’s been fun.

KM:  People usually want to know what any artist’s influences are. But we’re going to make you narrow that down to the one album that truly affected your path in music.

Patty:  Transatlanticism by Death Cab for Cutie just opened my brain. Before that I didn’t really know what I liked in music. Like, I liked whatever my friends liked, or thought I did anyway. And then I heard that record and it’s just in another world.

Dwight:  I’d say that the first record that affected me was Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys. The first one that I went like, “whooooa. I want to sing along with all of this! This is genius!” And I’m like, 6.

KM:  I wanna go back to the topic of touring for a minute. Which place was your favorite to play and why?

Dwight:  I like the Midwest. I like Des Moines and …

Patty:  Like Omaha.

Dwight:  Yeah! There’s something really awesome about the Midwest. Or just out-of-the-way places, Portland’s been great too. When you don’t get a band everytime they come through on tour, like a city doesn’t get every tour, kids are just dying for it.

Patty:  Which is the way it should be all the time. But it’s not. I mean, we’re from Austin and I love Austin. Favorite place to go? Austin. But the people who live there see live music 10 times a day.

Dwight:  We loved European fans too. ‘Cause they just get up on each other’s shoulders and throw a beer in the air.

Patty:  They know how to do it right.

Dwight:  It’s like a working class crowd with Stereophonics and they’re just out for a good time. And it just makes the show more fun. Listening, paying attention but being rowdy too.

Patty:  They’re always in the moment.

Dwight:  American fans these days tend to spend a lot of time on their cell phones.

Patty:  Me included! I’m on my phone all the damn time! But when you go to a show, it’s like, why are you there?

Dwight:  You almost want to give a lecture. Let’s all put our phones on silent like on an airplane and all participate and afterwards, let’s go crazy!
