7 Things We Love…

Welcome to this week’s edition of 7 Things We Love! Get inspired by all the things inspiring US right now, from what we’re reading and eating to what we’re wearing and listening to. Let us know what you think about our picks in the comments—and give us yours, too!

Need something amazing to wear to all those graduation parties you’ve been invited to? This romper is designed in soft, lightweight jersey to keep you cool while the parties heat up. We’re loving the tied back straps, the slouchy fit and the can’t help but be noticed bright pink hue.

There really is just nothing better than a cold, refreshing drink in the middle of a heat wave. Now that summer is (almost) (finally?) here, we can’t get enough of iced coffee. Whether you like it black or with cream and sugar, it’s got the perfect amount of caffeine to give you that needed boost when you feel like you’re starting to drag. (Plus, we love taking afternoon walks to Big Dog, a coffee shop near our South Side campus.)

There’s a mystery surrounding the death of Brooklyn teen Amelia, and her mother is determined to get to the bottom of it. Multiple plot twists, gasp out loud surprises and intertwining characters make this a highly entertaining and seriously obsessive read. We even started an office book club just so we could read this one!

We can’t wait for this two-part miniseries, airing on May 22-23 on The CW. Not only does it star the gorgeous Jessica Findlay (who played Sybil on Downton Abbey), but this story that shifts back and forth between medieval and modern-day France features Tom Felton (AKA Draco Malfoy) and Sebastian Stan (AKA the Winter Soldier). We can’t wait to travel in time with these three.

Want to listen to some awesome bootleg mashups? Head to this site, run by A Plus D, which promises to “provide the soundtrack for the A.D.D. generation.” Find mashups of everything from “Turn Down For What” and “#Selfie” to “Timber” and the can’t help but dance to it “Happy” by Pharrell.

These four guys from Philly have been rocking since their debut studio album, Wagonwheel Blues, in 2008. Off their third studio album, Lost In The Dream, “Red Eyes” is the perfect road trip song—it has just enough energy to keep you going but with a relaxed, laidback vibe.

Did you know today is Love A Tree Day? And there’s really just no better place to do that than the Muir Woods. It’s filled with redwood and sequoia trees with ancestors that date back millions of years—and the sight of these massive trees is, in a word, magical. After you get your fill of nature, be sure to take a drive down the coastal highway for some truly breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean.

#AEOSTYLE Challenge: Maxi Skirts

Maxi skirts are one of our favorite spring and summer staples. They’re an easy dressing piece that can work for a festival, date night, or even just running errands. Since we are such fans of their versatility, we asked two bloggers – Katelyn from The Skinny Blonde Girl and Nicole from Dainty Girl – to show us their #AEOSTYLE wearing our Front Slit Maxi Skirt.

Meet Katelyn:
Katelyn lives in downtown Toronto, loves all things marketing and has a penchant for collecting shoes and lipsticks. Her personal style is always changing, just as she’s always trying new beauty products and learning about new places in the city. The Skinny Blonde Girl is her not-so-secret diary of her everyday life, opinions on places and things and outfits she’s worn.

What inspired Katelyn’s look:
The trick to pulling together a chic but comfortable outfit is to combine your maxi skirt with stand-out footwear and a little bit of structure – like my denim vest, also from American Eagle Outfitters. I can see myself wearing this all summer long – from patio dinners to music festivals. I also think it makes a totally simple bathing suit cover for a day at the beach. Just pack a plain white t-shirt (or grey, like me!) and you’ll have an impromptu outfit in 2 seconds flat.

What inspired Nicole’s look:
The AEO Front Slit Maxi Skirt is one of those pieces that every girl needs in her spring and summer wardrobe. It’s effortlessly boho-chic and super comfortable with an elasticized waistband and soft jersey fabric. The slit is sexy without being too revealing and it makes this maxi skirt really easy to walk around in. I styled mine with a basic tank, a printed kimono and laser cut block heels for a bohemian summer look that’s perfect for a music festival, brunch or shopping!

What inspired Jessica’s look:
I think a lightweight white summer sweater is a closet staple each and every year! Since the open knit can be a bit, um, revealing, I wore a navy bralette underneath. On a side note, I’m kind of obsessed with bralettes. They are so comfy and add a little hint of sexy poking out from tops. Definitely a do for the summer months ahead!

Weekends are all about comfort since most of it is spent on my bike, trekking around the city. As comfortable as I like to be, style is always key. A great pair of denim goes a long way and these white washed skinny jeans are perfect for spring or summer with just enough stretch for long days on my bike. #AEOSTYLE Challenge: Colorblock

Colorblocked — the perfect way to inject brights and neons into your wardrobe without being too loud. This trend has been around for the past few seasons and we don’t think it is going anywhere anytime soon. We don’t mind though because the trend is super cool and gives us an excuse to wear bold spring hues.

Menswear blogger Anthony Urbano from Closet Freaks was up for our challenge of styling a colorblocked look with some of our new summer pieces. Check out his look below and let us know what you think in the comments.

Pair your joggers with a cool printed sneaker.

What inspired Anthony’s look:
Blue is my favorite color so when I saw the shades of blue in this shirt, I knew I wanted to pair it with something else in the same color family to play up the color block trend. I chose to do some navy joggers and a fun pair of printed grey sneakers to keep the outfit playful and casual.

Merchant Interview: Laura Khan

Some may say that a girl’s best friend is a great pair of shoes. Now, imagine getting to work with shoes all… day… long.  For Laura K., Merchandise Manager for shoes and accessories, this is reality.  We sat down with Laura to learn more about her amazing job as well as a little bit about her, too — she is quite the fashionista, gals!  Check out the interview below.

Name:  Laura Khan

Occupation:  Merchandise Manager

Where are you from:  This question is always tough for me because I grew up moving around a bit.  I lived in Maryland, North Carolina and Ohio before moving to Pittsburgh.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do… I’m a Capricorn, a dog lover, married to a smarty pants and a new mom of the coolest kid in the world.  I’m obsessed with interior design and party planning for any one of my friends — our accessories team is famous for office birthday parties!  I manage the men’s and women’s shoe and accessories buying team for our website.  We work with the store merchants, design and production teams to develop amazing AEO product and then buy styles from other brands (New Balance, Birkenstock, Timberland, etc.) to build an awesome assortment online.

What kind of projects do you find yourself working on from day to day?  Our team manages four seasons at once, so we are analyzing sales, tracking shipping, buying or hind-sighting on any given day.  Right now we are working on buying our Holiday 2014 collection, so I am spending a lot of time checking out new vendor assortments to see if we want to buy any of their product.  There will be a lot of fun gifts in accessories this year and you are going to want to update your closet with at least five new pairs of shoes.

What do you love most about working with shoes?  I like being able to shop the market, going to different trade shows to see product from our vendors AND working with our fantastic AEO shoe design and production teams.  That gives us a lot of options to make sure that our collection is trend right and ties back to the apparel assortment.  Shoes complete the outfit!

What made you want to pursue merchandising?  I kind of fell into merchandising.  I started out at AEO allocating skirts and dresses to all of the stores eight years ago.  After about a year, I moved over to the web merchandising team because there was a lot of growth potential and I could get creative merchandising the web site and be focused on product.  I started in web when there were only five merchants and now there are 30!

Who are some of your favorite artists?  If you know me, you know I like slow R&B jams.  My favorites are John Legend, Miguel, Trey Songz and Bruno Mars.

What are you obsessed with lately?  Watching my son grow up.

Associate Interview- Laura K.

Check out Laura’s adorable son on her Instagram.

On your playlist?  Beyoncé, Beyoncé and JayZ!

Any upcoming vacations planned that you are excited about?  Headed to Nags Head, Outer Banks in 2 weeks with our family!  I can’t wait to sit my bum on a beach chair and watch the kids play and listen to the waves crash.

Five words to describe you:  Sparkly, Neon, Happy, Smiley, Yes.

Favorite destination:  St John, USVI.  We went in January with some friends and every beach there was ridiculously gorgeous.

Favorite quote:  If you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely – Roald Dahl

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?  Be kind. Work hard. Stay humble. Smile often. Stay loyal. Keep honest. Travel when possible. Never stop learning. Be thankful always. And love

And the advice you’d offer aspiring buyers?  See above!

Three items on your AEO wish list.  AEO thick strap sandal in gold, AEO Crocheted Romper in black and the AEO Boho Embroidered Bucket Backpack in multi.

Three tasks on your bucket list.  Travel the world, have a garden and ride horses.

What are your fashion rules to live by?  I live in jeans, I make sure to purposefully wear white before Memorial Day and I can never have too many pairs of shoes.

What AEO pieces are topping your list this year?  Overalls, rompers and all of the shoes I buy of course.

If you were accidentally locked in AEO HQ overnight, what would we find you wearing in the morning?  I would seriously have to call the AEOHotline if this happened to me, but luckily the Aerie team sits two rows down from me and they normally have a few samples lying around.  And I’d have to hit up our AEO sample closet for a dress.

AEO Associate Interview

Laura’s purse contents. We know where we’re going if we want a sweet snack!

Favorite style of shoes?  Booties. They look perfect with almost any outfit all year round.

Favorite accessory?  Jewelry.  I always have a watch, stacks of bracelets, stud earrings and some sort of necklace on.

Are there any accessories or shoes coming out this summer that you’re loving?  Stacking earrings up your ear, I was surprised to see that I still had my second earring holes! I’m even contemplating getting more — crazy!  Birkenstocks are back in a big way this year, I still have my Arizona’s from middle school, but I also have the Gizeh in black and Kairo in white. And now I want to buy baby Birks for my son.

What trends are you seeing with shoes and accessories for Summer and BTS?  This is definitely the year of the sneaker.  There’s a lot of print and pattern to spice up a basic outfit.  Bandanas are a fun multi-use accessory to wear as a headband, bracelet, bun wrap or tie around the strap of a bag.

What trends would you like to see gone for Summer and BTS?  Skorts!
