What’s Hot For Summer: Camo and Global Prints

One of the best things about summer is the #AEOStyle that goes with it. This season, camo is sticking around for guys while ikat and global prints are still top of the trend list for women. Check out some of our favorite pieces below!

Guys:  The menswear catwalks were flooded with camo this year and this print is such a huge trend that it is being considered the new khaki. To help you incorporate this look into your wardrobe, we’ve  taken the rugged yet fun print to new levels by throwing it on unexpected items like canvas sneakers, bags and hats. Our favorite piece has to be the camo cargo short paired back to classics like chambray or workwear shirts and slip on sneakers for a low key vibe.  Luckily, the print is muted enough to pair with any color you want… so go ahead, what are you waiting for... step up your #AEOStyle, by rocking your camo with bold colors like citron or neon pink. Your fashion game has never looked so good.

Stylist Tip: Only wear ONE piece of camo at a time. (you will thank us for this)

Girls:  Ikat and global prints have been a favorite in our styling and fashion world this year (as well as in our apartments, think pillows and curtains!) and luckily for us it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. To keep the look fresh, we’ve evolved the trend into a broader scope of products.  If you haven’t tried the global trend already you should. Whatever your style is,  you can easily incorporate the print into your look, from the boho girl with a backpack to the preppier girl in a classic short. We love this trend paired back to neutral pieces allowing it to make a statement – a classic denim shirt with bold print shorts are a summer staple. The printed backpack really pops against a solid maxi dress.

Stylist Tip: The same camo tip applies for ikat, only one piece at a time… just sayin’

Get to know Coco Yokoyama, AEO Stylist

Do you ever wonder who helps Preston and Lauren put together #AEOStyle concepts per season? We sat down with the hilarious and smiley Senior Stylist for AE.com, Coco Yokoyama to talk about her day to day job, style and trends for upcoming seasons. Want to know what her favorite memory of Preston is or what emoji she would be? Check out her rapid fire interview below to find out!

Coco Yokoyama

Senior Stylist for AEO Direct

What does your day to day look like at the office?
On shoot days, I arrive at the studio early to make sure the model is in hair and makeup, then Bri (my lovely assistant) helps prep the clothes for the model. After hair and makeup are complete, we do a quick fitting with the model. Then, we go on set and shoot our product all day until we get the perfect shot. We jam out to great music, laugh at each others goofiness and just have fun!

Favorite photo shoot that you’ve been on?
For AEO, I love every shoot that I’ve been on! The campaign shots for every season have been amazing and I’m so blessed to travel to such amazing locations with a rad team of people.  Another one of my all time favorite shoots that I’ve been on was when I was a little girl, my family shot for GQ for Fathers Day back home in Cali! It was a blast.

Challenges that you’ve faced in your occupation?
Everyday is a challenge…it’s called life (haha)

How do you come up with outfits for each season?- What’s your strategy/process?
Preston and Lauren usually have insight on what the design team has in store for the upcoming seasons and base the styling from working closely with these teams. Once Preston and Lauren have a concept, they relay that info to me and I execute!

Best advice you’ve been given to handle this role?
Be a leader, not a follower.

Are there any trends that you don’t want to come back?

Favorite staple in your wardrobe?
Anything black! I ALWAYS wear black!

#AEOSTYLE Challenge: Summer Whites

You know the old saying – don’t wear white before Memorial Day or after Labor Day. Here at American Eagle Outfitters, we think fashion rules are made to be broken. We’re never willing to give up our favorite white pieces (winter whites, anyone?) and neither are two of our favorite fashion bloggers, Rima from Fire on the Head and Blair from Love, Blair.

Rima and Blair pulled together two all-white looks that are so cute your grandmother won’t mind that you’re wearing white a few days early. Check out their looks below, learn more about each girl and get inspired by their awesome #AEOSTYLE.

Meet Rima:
Rima is a marketing student, blogger and model who currently splits her time between school in Florida and work in Los Angeles. A closet full of denim and basics allows Rima to stay authentic to her personal style and act as an approachable inspiration for young women everywhere. This is showcased on Rima’s blog, Fire on the Head, where she posts her simplistic looks with a tomboy twist.

Rima from Fire on the Head shows you how to style an all-white look.

What inspired Rima’s look:
Nothing screams summer like an all white look with tomboy flair, of course. I paired my American Eagle Outfitters Boy Jean Crop with the Short Sleeve Favorite Shirt and sneakers for a boyish look that’s perfect for backyard BBQ’s and skating around the neighborhood. The school uniform vibes on top are balanced out with ripped knee detailing on the baggy fit jeans. Both pieces are light weight and perfect for the heat. Excuse me while I wear variations on this look all summer long!

Meet Blair:
Blair is a gal that doesn’t like to sit still. She’s a communication and creative consultant, fashion blogger at Love, Blair, (semi-retired) model and undercover nerd. She’s addicted to Instagram, eats vegan (mostly), is obsessed with almond milk lattes and listens to trance too loud. Currently residing in Grand Rapids, Michigan with her husband Ross.

What inspired Blair’s look:
I’ve been venturing into crop tops as of late and fell in love with this shortall and crop combo. The all-white look felt uber-springy and playful, especially with a dash of midriff and baby bun hairs.

7 Things We Love…

Welcome to this week’s edition of 7 Things We Love! Get inspired by all the things inspiring US right now, from what we’re reading and eating to what we’re wearing and listening to. Let us know what you think about our picks in the comments—and give us yours, too!

Need something amazing to wear to all those graduation parties you’ve been invited to? This romper is designed in soft, lightweight jersey to keep you cool while the parties heat up. We’re loving the tied back straps, the slouchy fit and the can’t help but be noticed bright pink hue.

There really is just nothing better than a cold, refreshing drink in the middle of a heat wave. Now that summer is (almost) (finally?) here, we can’t get enough of iced coffee. Whether you like it black or with cream and sugar, it’s got the perfect amount of caffeine to give you that needed boost when you feel like you’re starting to drag. (Plus, we love taking afternoon walks to Big Dog, a coffee shop near our South Side campus.)

There’s a mystery surrounding the death of Brooklyn teen Amelia, and her mother is determined to get to the bottom of it. Multiple plot twists, gasp out loud surprises and intertwining characters make this a highly entertaining and seriously obsessive read. We even started an office book club just so we could read this one!

We can’t wait for this two-part miniseries, airing on May 22-23 on The CW. Not only does it star the gorgeous Jessica Findlay (who played Sybil on Downton Abbey), but this story that shifts back and forth between medieval and modern-day France features Tom Felton (AKA Draco Malfoy) and Sebastian Stan (AKA the Winter Soldier). We can’t wait to travel in time with these three.

Want to listen to some awesome bootleg mashups? Head to this site, run by A Plus D, which promises to “provide the soundtrack for the A.D.D. generation.” Find mashups of everything from “Turn Down For What” and “#Selfie” to “Timber” and the can’t help but dance to it “Happy” by Pharrell.

These four guys from Philly have been rocking since their debut studio album, Wagonwheel Blues, in 2008. Off their third studio album, Lost In The Dream, “Red Eyes” is the perfect road trip song—it has just enough energy to keep you going but with a relaxed, laidback vibe.

Did you know today is Love A Tree Day? And there’s really just no better place to do that than the Muir Woods. It’s filled with redwood and sequoia trees with ancestors that date back millions of years—and the sight of these massive trees is, in a word, magical. After you get your fill of nature, be sure to take a drive down the coastal highway for some truly breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean.
