AEO Premium Denim Diary: Two Month Check In

AEO Premium Denim Diary: Two Month Check In
Two of our menswear buyers, Alex and Nghia, have been “breaking in” our Premium Denim following our denim designer Joanna’s approach. By the second month of wearing, you begin to see fading and distress in the jeans so this was the perfect time to check in with Alex and Nghia.

This is my 3rd pair of raw denim, so I knew what to expect going in and there’s a little bit more excitement each time I get a new pair since it’s practically a new canvas. The excitement comes from the endless possibilities of how the denim can be progressively shaped with wear. It really comes down to two things that affect the fade and wear: construction and the person wearing the jeans.

The denim was extremely rigid at first and not the most comfortable thing to wear but guys around the office liken it to a flag of pride – like I’m toughing it out right now, breaking them in, no shortcuts. Breaking in raw denim is crazy fun – I try to go for a bit without washing just so the multiple wears/creases can start to set in, but if they’re dirty then they’re dirty. Just wash them. I have even soaked some of my other jeans before wearing just so you get that initial shrinkage. You can control shrinkage in the denim too if you soak the jeans while wearing them. It’ll soften up the fabric a bit and make sure they don’t shrink too much.

My jeans also act as a checklist. I have designated pockets for all my essentials. It’s almost a foul-proof sweep to make sure you didn’t leave anything you need whether heading out for the day or leaving for home after a night out. The places wherethings are kept start to fade faster than the other parts of the jean because they’re raised up more.

After wearing the raw denim for two months, I have begun to see a considerable amount of change. The first thing I noticed was the fit. Since this is premium denim, I sized down on the pair I am breaking in.  At first they were rigid and tight but now they fit me like a glove.

The jeans have also taken on some very interesting wear patterns.  Both the back of the knees and hip pockets have great whiskers from the amount of time I have spent sitting in the jeans.  They give my pair of denim a unique attitude that I very much appreciate: this isn’t a cookie cutter jean, rather they are an original piece.  I am still waiting to see more wear on the pockets from holding my cell phone, wallet, keys etc., but I am excited to see this develop over the next few months.

Continue following along over the next several months as Alex and Nghia continue to wear the jeans nearly every day and see what happens as they become one of a kind, based on how they each live their lives.
