Styled by Preston: Pattern Mixing & 90s Grunge

We went to the birthplace of American music and style—San Francisco—for the American Eagle Outfitters Spring 2014 photo shoot. Our location was inspired by the pieces our designers created for our spring collection: cool new denim washes, colorblocking, new takes on classic T-shirts and updated prints.

Preston pulled Bailey off the set during the shoot to tell us more about one of his favorite trends from the shoot: pattern mixing and 90’s grunge. If you haven’t tried pattern mixing yet, this look by Preston is a great place to start. Preston paired a plaid workwear shirt with our Printed Sneaker. To keep the prints from clashing, try mixing a larger print (the plaid) with a smaller print (the floral). The plaid shirt tied around the waist also channels the grunge music scene of the 90’s (and keeps you warm on chilly mornings).

This look also features another big trend for spring: mint. Mint looks best with neutrals like dark indigo, black or white. Preston paired the mint Bold Graphic Sweatshirt with Destroyed Denim Shorts.
