Styled by Lauren: Pastels & Neutrals

Our Manager of Styling, Lauren, was inspired by the sunshine of San Francisco when she was building this look for Adria during our Spring 2014 photo shoot. One of the trends for spring we’re most excited for is soft dressing and our Soft Pant is the easiest way to start the look. Adria is primed to be the most stylish girl at any block party in her pastel and neutral palette.

To keep Adria’s look really easy and stylish, Lauren paired the Soft Pant with our Cropped Raglan Sweater. This sweater comes in five different colors ranging from pretty pink and yellow pastels to basic black. We suggest grabbing one in every color to match back to all of our printed pants.

You can wear just about any shoe with this look! Your favorite booties or heels can dress it up, or go for comfort with our Slip-On Sneaker. Add a Knit Beanie for another touch of effortlessly cool style. Lauren went with black accessories to accentuate the detailed pastel-colored print of the pants.

Styled by Lauren: The New Classics

Styled by Lauren: The New Classics

Our Spring 2014 photo shoot took us to the birthplace of American music and fashion—San Francisco. We were inspired by the resurgence of classic, preppy styles in San Francisco, like our French Terry Sweater and Plaid Button Down Shirt. We pulled our Manager of Styling, Lauren and Tyler offset to get their thoughts and styling tips for updating our favorite classic pieces.

Our staple French Terry Sweater has been upgraded from your go-to neutral sweater to cool French terry. It has the look and feel of your favorite sweater but the coziness of your favorite hoodie, and it’s perfect for layering on chilly spring mornings. The pastel colors of our Plaid Button Down Shirt are fresh and bright for spring and look great layered with a neutral sweater. Pair them with our Destroyed Denim Cutoff Short (cuff the bottoms for a preppy feel) and Reebook Classic Nylon Sneakers for the ultimate in old-school cool.

Styled by Lauren: Soft Dressing

Styled by Lauren: Soft Dressing

Soft dressing is exactly what it sounds like –  easy, soft, chic pieces that make it possible to look stylish yet feel relaxed. Plus it’s one of our newest (and favorite!) trends this season.  Soft dressing includes everything from pants and bralettes to dresses, with a strong focus on feminine details like cinching, bows and ruffles.

Get casual chic in a feminine jumpsuit

Watch the video above to see how Lauren, our Manager of Styling, dresses aspiring singer and Project Live Your Life winner Irina,  in this season’s must-have soft dressing piece,  the Ruffled Jumpsuit.  This effortless outfit can be easily dressed up or down.  Lauren keeps Irina’s look casual with studded booties and a simple necklace. Need to transition from day to night? Swap the booties for your fave wedges, change out the simple necklace to one that makes a statement and grab a clutch.

Need more ideas on how to wear this trend? Replace your leggings with slouchy cinched pants, pair a soft cropped tank with your favorite jeans or simply throw on a soft boho shift dress with a hooded cardigan. Oh, and don’t forget to accessorize!

Styled by Lauren: Nautical

Styled by Lauren: Nautical

Season after season, one of our favorite trends that keeps coming back to American Eagle Outfitters is the nautical trend. What says spring more than pieces inspired by the sea? This season, give a nod to nautical style by layering your look with chunky knits and navy stripes. We love iconic maritime-inspired pieces like the Striped Sweater mixed with modern, muted camp and a timeless dark denim jacket. Camo is a great base if you want to mix prints—and adds edgy cool to a typically preppy, clean-cut look. Add rugged chukkas (get even bolder and wear them with a pair of bright socks to add a pop of color) and a pair of sunglasses to complete the look.

Did you catch our coverage of New York Fashion Week with Preston and Lauren? They hit the streets with photographer George Evan to capture some of the awesome street style they spotted while attending the fall shows. Read on to learn more about the photographer behind the lens and follow him on Instagram at @thevagabound.

How did you discover your interest for photography?

When I was young, I encountered the pinhole effect, which is a lighting phenomenon discovered in the times of Aristotle, and became fascinated with the way lighting could create and manipulate a mood. My parents had a film camera I would use. I began using it as a bridge into other people’s lives and using it as a way to portray a person while expressing ideas and opinions.

How did you get your start as a professional photographer?

I attended photography school in Santa Barbara. While I was there, I interned for David LaChapelle and then started working for him at his studio, which was an invaluable education in itself. After a while, I came back home to the East Coast and settled in. New York has been a home base for me ever since. Photography, like life, can be an exciting journey.

What is your favorite style of photography?

I am drawn to conceptual portraits – images that convey who a person is in an aesthetically moving way. Fashion and adventure photography also have their own beauty to me. I’m obsessed with learning about new styles, new cultures and meeting new people.

What is your favorite camera to shoot with?

I grew up shooting film and later printing in the darkroom and I still use many alternative techniques in some of my work. In addition to shooting digital, I usually will use a few different vintage cameras that I’ve gathered over the years. Each has its own advantages and unique way of seeing.

What is something surprising about being a photographer that people don’t usually know?

It feels more like a lifestyle than a job. One that provides both freedom and challenges. For me, starting out has been a balance between left and right brain.

Where is the coolest place you’ve ever traveled for your job?

I recently spent a few weeks working in Zambia and I had the opportunity to meet and work with some incredibly inspirational people.

George captured this photo of Victoria Falls during a recent trip to Zambia. Click through to see more of his photos on his website.

What is your favorite style of AEO jeans?

The Slim Jean is cozy and durable. The Denim Jacket is great either on its own or with other layers.

Does your work influence your fashion? How?

Absolutely. Fashion, like photography, is a way of expressing myself. I’m thankful to have worked with amazing brands and stylists and I hope some of that style has rubbed off on me.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I can find ideas and inspiration inside myself as a result of looking everywhere: in clothes, cultures, nature, memories and most of all, love.

What was the most fun part of shooting New York Fashion Week with Preston, Lauren and AEO?

The entire experience with AEO, Preston and Lauren has been really productive, which is always inspiring. Working with a great crew to photograph amazing people and cool clothes has been a dream come true.
