AE Friends & Family: Jack Ryan, Artist

Our friend Jack Ryan is an artist and producer in San Diego, CA. Our shoe team loves his work so we wanted to learn a little more about him. Read on for more.

How did you get your start as a shoe artist?

I’ve always gone out of my way to be original with my style and look at everything as something I should customize.  I started drawing on my shoes in college at Villanova University outside of Philadelphia.  Being a Californian going to school on the East Coast, I obviously skateboarded all around campus and people started asking me where I bought my shoes.  I knew I had a business waiting for me to create and I haven’t stopped since. I’m just going to keep spreading my floral design to the world and see where it takes me.

How much time does each piece take you to complete?

It usually takes me a little over an hour per pair.  I just put on good music or a cool documentary and try and learn something. Basically, I always look to create while I create.

What is your favorite piece of work you have created?

By far, my favorite creation is something I came up with that is literally in the process of being patented.  I can’t say much about it, but it obviously involves fashion.  That being said, I somehow stumbled into designing an entire iPhone/iPad game last summer and it’s kicking butt!  It’s called Word Carnivale and it’s free. I just love knowing that people are using something that I designed. It’s a great feeling.

Besides shoes, what other mediums do you work in?

I actually just finished my first collection of canvas work, and found a gallery to place it in so I am so stoked right now! The collection is called “Flowtations” and each piece involves a motivational quote represented by my world of flowers.  I knew that if I was going to make canvas art, I wanted it to be positive and very to the point.  It’s also the most surfed out artwork I could make without drawing waves or surfboards.

I’ve also been making electronic music  for a long time and actually just licensed a beat for a commercial. I go by the name Humble Goods.  Music is definitely what makes me happy, especially when people are listening to my music.

Does your work influence your personal style?

My work definitely represents my style – I mean I wear my work.  In short, I would describe both my work and my style as simple, surfed-out, and one-of-a-kind.  We are all one-of-a-kind, so I try and embrace that to the fullest.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Music.  Everything comes back to that.  I know there is so much that I haven’t discovered yet, but music helps bring it out of me.  Also other designers, artists, and musicians push me to create.  I look up to everyone that is creating and try and learn from them.  They help me think differently about what I’m doing.  I’m really influenced by everyone, creative or not.

What is next on your life to-do list?

Well, I will be very disappointed if I do not create my own shoe line and change the way everyone looks at the clothing they wear.  My hand drawn art can only reach so many people.  My friend and I are doing everything we can to meet the right people, the right manufacturer, the right everything in order to make this goal happen.

What’s on your Summer playlist?

Have you guys heard of Ben Howard yet? He’s amazing.  I also love a dance music producer named Plastic Plates.  He will make you happy.  And myself… Humble Goods.  I’m always listening to my own stuff so I can come up with something better.  Always improve on what you’ve created. Water your petals!
