Take the hint: it’s time to try a jean that’s made to move with you – our Men’s Flex/Denim. We partnered with Anthony from Oh Anthonio for a three-part denim series featuring some of our favorite new Flex fits. For his first look, Anthony styled our Men’s Skinny Core Flex Jean with a chilly, winter white vibe. Get to know Anthony and the inspiration behind his #AEOSTYLE below.

Oh Anthonio/Skinny Core Flex Jean

Meet Anthony: Anthony Urbano is an NJ native turned current New Yorker. With a degree in Civil Engineering from Rutgers University, he has worked as a structural engineer designing buildings in New York City for over six years. Not only an academic mind but a creative creature as well, Anthony’s interest in photography and fashion led him to create a personal style blog that serves as a creative outlet to share his musings on fashion, travel and lifestyle.

What Inspired Anthony’s Winter White Look: “This past summer, the all-white ‘painter’ look was a big trend that I was definitely a fan of, so for this outfit I wanted to do my version of that trend for winter. Personally, I love to wear white all year round, and although white denim might not feel intuitively wintry, it definitely works if you wear it right. I layered shades of white and off-white in different textures to add visual interest to this monochromatic outfit. The end result is a minimal but sophisticated winter outfit.”

This week we’re inspired by yoga instructor and #AerieREAL girl, Dana Falsetti from Nola Trees Yoga! Read on to learn more about how yoga helped her discover self-love and what #AerieREAL means to her.

We love that your passion for yoga has taught you self-love and given you the strength to believe in yourself now more than ever! What are some of your other interests or hobbies?
I’ve only been practicing yoga for about a year and half, and in that time my reality has shifted so much. Before yoga existed in my life, everything was about music. I’ve been singing since I could speak. There were times that I felt music was the only thing that understood me. You know when you listen to a song and it just sounds exactly like how you feel? I pretty much always felt like that. And on the flip side, singing and making music with my friends did and still does bring me more happiness than almost anything else. Just like my personal yoga practice, music is a way for me to express myself and to better understand myself. I also love to travel, especially road trips, and I even love to do them alone. 20+ hour drives with nothing but me, beautiful sunsets, and my favorite music. I always loved spending time alone more than most people. I find it comforting.

Aside from the physical changes, what other benefits did you experience from yoga?
The physical changes were pretty unexpected, so were all the others. When I started practicing I never dreamed my practice would look like it does now. Yes I’ve gotten strong and more flexible in my body, but the most dramatic changes are the unseen. Yoga showed me how to believe in myself after years of feeling like nothing. Growing up as the fat kid isn’t easy. I felt unworthy. I didn’t understand why I had to be different when all I wanted was to fit in. I came to my yoga practice after years of binge eating, and after a year of focusing on my health. At the time I had lost a significant amount of weight, but absolutely nothing changed. My body changed, but I brought myself with me to my “new body.” I still felt unworthy, I still felt limited, I still felt stuck. When I started practicing yoga I thought my body would limit my practice. But when you show up everyday and put in the work, things change. This is where the magic happens. I started getting poses I convinced myself I could never do. When those moments happen, it’s a huge paradigm shift. I started wondering what else I was telling myself I couldn’t do that I could have been doing all along. I started realizing that limitations are in the mind. Slowly over the last year and a half I have learned to love myself, to believe in myself and my worth, and to work for the things I want and deserve. Yoga does not look like a handstand or a backbend, it looks like love. Self-love first, and then it starts showing up all around you. But you have to show up for it, too.

What advice would you give someone who is interested, but never tried yoga before?
Just go. You have to just go. I know how intimidating and scary walking into your first yoga class can be. I couldn’t hold a down dog when I started. I felt like (and was) the fat newb in class. We all have insecurities and you’ll bring them with you into the room. But honestly, that’s kind of the point. Most of us come to yoga from a place of darkness when we are looking for healing. At the end of the day, you show up on your mat for you. You have to decide you’re worth it despite anything else. I promise if you can dedicate yourself to the practice, or to anything really, you’ll get exactly what you didn’t know you need.

What is your favorite yoga pose?
This answer changes all the time, but right now it’s probably Pincha Mayurasana, also known as Forearm Balance. This is a tough posture, one I never dreamed I would be able to do, and I put in a lot of work to find a place of ease in it. When I’m balanced upside down I kind of feel like I’m flying or defying gravity. It’s pretty amazing what we are capable of.

You offer trainings and workshops ALL over the United States! Where can our Aerie girls go to find more information?
Yes! I feel like the luckiest girl in the world most days. All of my workshops are on my website, nolatreesyoga.com. I also occasionally host retreats and team up with other teachers on trainings, so look out for those. I’m about to launch some online content as well, so we can practice together even if we never get to meet :) I’m also on Facebook as Dana Falsetti, and Instagram as @nolatrees.

What does being #AerieREAL mean to you?
I’m all about knowing your worth, so to me, that’s being #AerieREAL. My worth isn’t defined by my body, my stretch marks, or my yoga practice. And honestly, knowing your worth brings immense freedom. Mostly freedom from your own mind, but it will permeate throughout your entire life.

Thank you, Dana! Be sure to check out her site and follow along on Instagram.

xoxo,

Aerie

Real Talk with Catherine Gignac

Get REAL with Catherine Gignac, AEO’s Manager of Digital Creative! Read on to learn more about how she uses yoga to help balance the stress of everyday life, her favorite pose and what #AerieREAL means to her.

Real Talk with Catherine Gignac

You’re amazing at yoga! How did you begin?
Haha, thanks! It’s fun to be able to go upside down and stand on my head. Those poses constantly push me to try new, scarier things. But really, that’s not why I do yoga. Work and life are stressful (so gross, right?) and yoga balances all that out. I can have a rough day, go to yoga and then feel completely decoupled from what was dragging me down prior to class. I get far fewer headaches because my back and neck muscles are stronger. I take myself less seriously because I’ve learned to goof around and take risks on my mat. I’ve felt my highest highs and my lowest lows emotionally while practicing, but it’s always healing and empowering to just be alone with my breath and my thoughts. Plus, no one can tell whether you’re dripping tears or sweat! Most importantly, like-attracts-like and the community of yogis at my studio has sourced most of my closest friendships in life. We support each other and often say, “Detox before you retox,” and go out together after my Friday night class.

Real Talk with Catherine Gignac

What’s your favorite yoga pose?
I have a love-hate relationship with double pigeon. It’s a crazy deep hip-opener that feels so good sometimes and so tense others. Yogis often say that we hold our emotional baggage in our hips. We run on them, sit on them, drive on them and they’re the biggest joints in our bodies. When we slowly open them up, we also peel away at layers of built up emotion that we haven’t let go of — kind of like peeling layers off an onion. Sounds crazy, but it’s true!

For somebody who is interested but hasn’t given yoga a chance, what would you say to them?
Just go and try it! Ironically, I hated my first class, but I found myself going to teacher training just a few years later. As a teacher, I always hear things like “I’ve thought about it but I don’t like the heat,” “I’m not flexible enough,” “Oh, I couldn’t do what you do!” but it’s not about that. I have students in my class from 11 to 72 years old (seriously!) of all different weights, health issues, and injuries. We encourage everyone to go at their own pace and do what they can. This week, a student of mine told me she’d been in a car accident and needs yoga to help rehabilitate her back. Another told me yoga helped her remain calm and get through the nightmare of having her newborn in the NICU for many months. Everyone comes to yoga for a physical experience, but if they stick with it, they end up having a total mind, body, spirit experience that few other forms of exercise can mirror.

Do you have a favorite quote or mantra?
My favorite quote is “You may think I’m small, but I have a universe inside my mind.” — Yoko Ono. I’ve loved this one for awhile because I’m pretty small in stature but I’m big in personality. Anytime I feel like I’m being underestimated or unheard, I think about this quote and remember we’re all pretty freakin’ powerful and expansive in what we can dream and accomplish. Another really great reading I love to share with my yoga class was introduced to me by my yoga mentor and it’s called the Invitation by Oriah Mountain Dreamer. Check it out, it’ll move you!

Real Talk with Catherine Gignac

What does #AerieREAL mean to you?
Ah, so much! I’ve loved watching the #AerieREAL campaign grow from a wee idea into a huge movement over the last few years. It’s the best feeling to have friends of mine, all in their late twenties and early thirties, tell me they’ve discovered Aerie and love, not just our undies and bralettes, but what we stand for. I’m proud of be part of the organization who decided to take a risk and start talking to girls in a way that we all relate to and deserve. #AerieREAL has inspired me to be less curated…on Instagram, in relationships, with what I say in my yoga classes. I’m unapologetically me, even if it’s means I don’t please everyone or say and do all the right things.
