We talked to Dr. Deborah Lindner, OB/GYN and Bright Pink’s Chief Medical Officer, about why it’s so important to see your doctor every year and what to expect from your appointment. Read on to find out why you should take charge of your health and call your doctor!

Call Your Doctor Day With Bright Pink

Why should women go to their doctor every year?

DL: Seeing your doctor or other primary care provider once a year is one of the most important actions you can take for your breast and ovarian health. I remind women that even when you feel healthy you still need to go. It’s important for you and your doctor to have an understanding of what healthy means for you specifically. It’s your baseline.

What if I’m nervous or uncomfortable about going?

DL: That’s natural! But don’t let it stop you from taking care of your body. I encourage women to see their annual exam as this one day a year that you have a partner in managing your health. National Call Your Doctor Day is all about getting up the motivation to call and put your health first. It’s important to find a provider that takes time to answer your questions and makes you feel comfortable. And don’t forget that it never hurts to get a second opinion.

What should we know before our appointment?

DL: It’s helpful to come prepared with your questions—ask us anything, we’re here to work with you—so you can walk away with a more personalized plan to manage your risk for cancer and other diseases. I recommend taking the AssessYourRisk.org quiz by Bright Pink to get a comprehensive report on your baseline risk for breast and ovarian cancer that you can print and bring to your appointment.

Also, it’s helpful to keep track of any changes in your body, specifically in your breasts, or changes to your menstrual cycle or digestive system. If anything has persisted for longer than 2 weeks, bring this to your doctor’s attention.

What should we expect when we’re there?

DL: A well woman exam should include a clinical breast exam, where your healthcare provider will feel your breasts with their hands. It should be thorough, cover all the breast tissue, and typically last several minutes. If your doctor offers this exam, say yes—and if your doctor doesn’t bring it up, make sure you do.

Your provider will also perform a pelvic exam where he or she will actually feel your ovaries to see if there is anything abnormal. During your pelvic exam, you may also receive a pap smear. It’s important to note that a pap smear checks for cervical cancer – not ovarian cancer.

As an OB/GYN, what is your biggest piece of advice for young women?

DL: You’re your own best health advocate. Be confident and take charge of scheduling your appointment. Let Bright Pink help you – join us and Aerie on June 13th  and make the call. Get all the resources you need by visiting CallYourDoctorDay.org.

Through 2017, all annual well woman exams are covered by insurance through the Affordable Care Act.

Unplug Meditation With Suze Yalof Schwartz

Get your OM on! We talked to Suze Yalof Schwartz, CEO and Founder of Unplug Meditation, and author of the new book Unplug: A Simple Guide to Meditation for Busy Skeptics and Modern Soul SeekersRead on to find out how she finds time to meditate with a busy schedule, and why you should too!

Unplug Meditation With Suze Yalof Schwartz

What type of practice would you recommend to a beginner who wants to give meditation a try?

SS: My favorite is the 16 second meditation taught to me by Davidji.

What was your inspiration and intention when first opening your studio?

SS: I wanted to learn to meditate with incredible teachers who made it easy, inspirational and fun.  I also wanted a space that was clean and beautiful filled with interesting people. I had no idea the power Unplug would have on so many lives from people experiencing panic attacks, anxiety, pain, cancer and even women just trying to get pregnant. The stories I hear every day blow me away and make me so grateful that I could provide a space for people to heal, connect create and dream.

Days can be hectic…whether it’s final exams, presentations at work or a long to-do list. How do you teach your students to lean on meditation?

SS: Our students know how they feel when they meditate and that is what keeps them coming back. Just taking one class will change your day and more will change your life.

  1. Close your eyes and count your breath
  2. Inhale for 4 seconds through the nose
  3. Hold for 4 seconds
  4. Exhale through the nose for 4 seconds and
  5. Hold for 4 seconds

Counting and breathing at the same time shuts your brain off and slowing down your breath signals to the brain that everything is going to be OK. I like to do this 16 second meditation every time I go through a door.

What’s your most memorable moment and/or experience opening Unplug Meditation?

SS: There have been so many. I think my favorite was when I met a woman who was one of our favorite customers and she was coming in 2 times a day for 4 weeks at her fertility doctor’s recommendation. She had tried invetro 3 times and this was her last chance. When she came in on week 4 and told me she was pregnant we all went crazy! That was one of the happiest days at Unplug. We have so many great stories like that. Lots of hugs and tears of joy.

Tell us a bit about your book, Unplug: A Simple Guide to Meditation for Busy Skeptics and Modern Soul Seekers. What are you hoping readers take from it?

SS: I wanted to create the book that I wished I had when I was starting out. I would love for the reader to hit the “that was easy” button after they finished and be inspired to meditate daily. I also want them to feel what it does for them because it affects everyone differently. This book is filled with my favorite tips, meditations and a simple explanation of the science behind it and the stories from our clients who experienced the powerful benefits.

Do you have a favorite Aerie product from our Chill. Play. Move. Collection that you find comfort in when meditating?

SS: I am obsessed with the positive messaging tee-shirts “Phones Down Eyes Up” – there are so many amazing ones!

Now tell us, what makes YOU #AerieREAL?

SS: What makes me #AerieREAL? My positive energy. I love life and sharing the things that inspire me with everyone and I think when you flow good energy you end up surrounding yourself with it.
