How To Style Leggings With Laura

Leggings have been on our must-have list for the past several seasons, but we’re especially excited about our Winter leggings this year. We’re offering more variety than ever – sweater fabric, bold patterns, photo real prints and, of course, the basic, go-with-everything hi-rise legging. Because we were feeling overwhelmed by all the amazing leggings, we turned to our favorite Styling Manager, Laura, for styling tips. Below, Laura pulled together two different looks featuring leggings to fit every style, from sporty athleisure to cozy comfort.

Look #1: Winterized Athleisure
We love the way printed leggings look paired back to sporty sneakers. The gold details on these sneaks elevate them from the average sport shoe, making this athleisure look on trend. Keep it seasonal with a heavier parka, and play with color by contrasting navy and grey hues with a sienna hoodie and a vibrant winter hat.

Look #2: Cozy Comfort
Sweater leggings are stealing the show this season, so let them do the talking for this look. Pair bold patterned sweater leggings back to a cream sweater with cool side zip features, and add a bit of shine with gold sneakers. Let a grey bralette peek out beneath the sweater for a flirty finish to the look.

#AEOSTYLE Roundup: Blanket Ponchos

This season, one of our favorite layering pieces is the blanket poncho – for obvious reason! We love getting away with comfortable and stylish fashion, and the blanket poncho is exactly that. With tons of interesting patterns and textures in our latest collection, ponchos and cardigans definitely aren’t boring anymore. For days when it’s not cold enough to wear a coat but you want an added layer of warmth, wrap yourself up in a blanket cardigan or blanket poncho. Because they’re a layering piece, ponchos look great with your basic jegging or even an on-trend shift dress. Accessorize with a wide brim hat or statement necklace, and don’t forget a stacked heeled bootie.

10 Must Have Fall Essentials

We’re swooning over all of the new Fall arrivals that hit our website last week and will land in stores on 11.5. We have so many favorite pieces from the updated collection that we had to ask our Styling Manager, Laura, to help us narrow down all of the amazing jeans, sweaters, boots, coats and accessories to her only top ten fall essentials. Laura’s picks have everything from cozy mock neck sweaters to the warmest boyfriend flannels and of course our newest denim collection, Denim X Café. Plus, we can’t forget to mention all of the beautiful color options across all of the Fall’s best styles. Check out Laura’s Top 10 Fall Essentials below, and make the last of the season the best of the season.

10 Must Have Fall Essentials

What we love most about Laura’s picks is that you could definitely mix and match these pieces several ways to make your own mini closet. A drapey tank would pair perfectly under a flannel or denim button down, and for ultimate layering add the cable knit cardigan on top! A cropped sweater and hi-rise destructed denim are on-trend and would look great under a heavier coat like a plaid blazer or cocoon jacket. Finish off any outfit with season-right ankle booties and a long pendant necklace.

AEO Denim X Café Hi-Rise Jegging
AEO Mock Neck Cropped Sweater

DIY Painted Pumpkins

Halloween is one of our favorite holidays, and we can’t wait to see all the spooky surprises this year has in store. One of our favorite ways to prep for the holiday is by decorating pumpkins. Since October 26 is National Pumpkin Day, we ‘re kicking off Halloween week with a tutorial to show you just how easy it is to design and paint your own stenciled pumpkins. The end result looks like it took endless hours, but DIY Painted Pumpkins are actually easy and fun to create. Read on to see how you can personalize your fall décor today!

What You’ll Need:

  • Pumpkins (as many as you’d like – we used three)
  • Permanent maker (fine-tipped works best)
  • Masking tape
  • Stencil of your design
  • Black acrylic paint
  • Palette or paper plate
  • Fine-tipped paintbrushes

How-To:

DIY Painted Pumpkins

Step 1: Gather all of your supplies. You can create your own stencil or buy one pre-made! We drew our Eagle design on thin cardboard and cut out the center.

DIY Painted Pumpkins

Step 2: Tape the stencil to the pumpkin with masking tape. Make sure it’s secure!

DIY Painted Pumpkins

Step 3: Using a fine-tipped permanent marker, draw around the stencil to outline your design on the pumpkin.

DIY Painted Pumpkins

Step 4: Take off the stencil and begin filling in your design with paint. You can use a palette or a paper plate to hold the paint. We kept it minimalistic using black paint only, but you could use multiple colors if you’d like. Be sure to go slowly so that you stay inside the stenciled design.

DIY Painted Pumpkins

Step 5: Let it dry! In the meantime, continue with your other pumpkins.

Happy National Pumpkin Day from AEO! How will you decorate your pumpkins this year? Tell us in the comments below, and show us your creations using #AEOSTYLE.

#MusicMonday: Kill Them With Colour Interview

We sat down with Wesley Marsh, the talent, heart and brains behind his band Kill Them With Colour to talk about music, style and the inspiration behind his success. Get to know Wesley in our exclusive AEO interview below and be sure to check out his new Brandon Flowers remix and more on Soundcloud.

Wes 5

AEO: Hey Wesley! You’ve been making a big splash in the music world recently, but before we talk about music, we’ve heard this isn’t the only thing you’re good at. Some of your previous roles include model/actor, graphic designer and producer? Tell us about this transition from one form of expression to another,
Wesley: I was born in France and my dad started taking me to castings in Pairs. I started getting into that work around 1989-1990. I had a little agency and that’s how I made my university money. I also did acting shows and taught English to French speaking people. The graphic design is all self taught. I wanted to push the brand myself and refrain from having to always hit someone up for graphics. I’ve done a lot of art myself, painting in particular. Then the transition into music started around 2003.  I got my Com-Tech teacher to change the course so I could focus solely on music. I was DJing a lot with my friends and I was in point in college where I had to pick music so I chose that path.

AEO: What has experimenting with all of these forms of expression taught you about yourself?
Wesley: Be open, experiment .

AEO: Was there a specific artist, band or album that’s influenced your path in music?
Wesley: I used to dance to Michael Jackson for hours when I was younger. I’d come home from school and my dad would be working in the dining room and I’d be dancing. I would have to close the doors close in the dining room to start dancing haha. Deep Forest and Enya on long car rides with my mom also influenced my music. Others that inspired me were Trinidad- Dance Hall and Reggae, Soca Calypso, basically growing up with that type of stuff. I also appreciate Major Lazor because he uses electronic with reggae. It has all those touchpioints which I like. It’s pretty eclectic.

AEO: Who are some of your biggest influences in music? Is there anyone that you’d like to work with?
Wesley: The great classical composers, Beethoven. There’s so many. I always say Jai-Paul from the UK. He released like 1 song in the past 5 years BTSTU and its amazing. His work that comes out is so awesome. Maybe if I mentioned him I can pull him out of the woodwork haha!

AEO: What’s the process like to create a remix?
Wesley: If artists send me the A capella’s then it’s a lot easier. I’ll start with chopping up vocals and build a chord progression. From there on out I’ll just feel it out and figure out what track its going to be. It’s basically chopping up and sampling a lot of stuff. I like to use a persons remix for synths, vocal samples and processions.

AEO: How did you come up with the name Kill Them With Colour?
Wesley: My mom and her artist friend in Trinidad. They’d go around and sell art and when she couldn’t sell anything they would come up with a term called “kill them with color”. Basically painting with so much color that it would sell because of the vibrancy. For me, I sometimes have so many types of music that people say there’s a sound to the name.

AEO: You’ve played at plenty of music festivals this summer including FireFly, Hellow festival, Bestival, Moonrise and more. What’s it like playing in front of thousands of people?
Wesley: Firefly was insane. The energy was awesome. To walk out onto a stage and to see that it’s surreal and humbling. I didn’t expect that a year ago. I also had all my friends at Firefly so the vibe was amazing.

West 4

AEO: Is there a music festival that you’d like to play at?
Wesley: Bonnaroo. I really want to play there.

AEO: What is your favorite place to perform?
Wesley: Beach, Pool Vibe. It plays into my upbringing. I need the sun and a nice beach.

AEO: Funniest or most embarrassing moment on the road?
Wesley: This would have to be at FireFly. We were staying in the camp grounds. I brought 10 of my homies and we decided to take all the windows and the roof off of my buddies jeep and duck tape my laptop and controllers to the top of the jeep. We drove around the camp site and I kid you not, we have go pro footage of like 40 people dancing around the jeep and I’m in the middle. My one friends holding a KTWC sign and my other friend is holding a huge Canadian flag. It was the best pre-party of the festival.

wes

AEO: Best fan moment?
Wesley: Its as my first fan photo. I got off stage and my friend found this guy in the crowd, they brought him to the side and was like he wants a picture he’s your biggest fan. The best part about it was he was wearing the same Popsicle shirt as me so that was hilarious.

AEO: What advice do you have for someone who wants to get into music?
Wesley: Make music that you want to hear. Don’t be afraid to experiment.

AEO: Describe your #AEOSTYLE
Wesley: It’s funny that I have the name KTWC bc I wear a lot of black. I have custom black sneakers and tapered pants, black jeans with the pinroll, black shirt. I have all of these hats and tossing a bunch of multi-color paint on them so that’s the KTWC accent.

Wes 2

AEO: Congrats on your launch of Brandon Flowers remix! Where can someone find out more about what you’re up to?
Wesley:
I’m always in the studio and on Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat (boraborlan). I always try to keep the snaps fun.

AEO: When you’re not playing music, what can we find you doing?
Wesley: Arts and crafts.
