Love the Swim You’re In with Rae Everyday

#AerieREAL girl Raeann of Rae Everyday shares how she learned to love the swim she’s in!

“I was invited to a pool party in the third grade for a classmate’s birthday. From the moment I received the invitation, I could barely contain my excitement. Swimming was always one of my favorite activities. The day of the party arrived and I slipped into my blue one-piece swimsuit that I wore for swim practice and dashed to the pool to join the other girls playing mermaids, although the fun didn’t last long. My excitement was quickly shattered when one of the girls at the party said I looked like the Michelin Man. At first, I didn’t understand. Why would she tell me this? Surely, my nine-year-old body didn’t resemble the Michelin Man whose body was made of well, tires, that created large roles from head to toe.”

“From that day forward, I began to believe the hurtful words that were said to me. I would stare at my reflection and ask myself why I was so fat and why I didn’t look like the other girls in my class. Every single day I would wake up and say, I’m going to start losing weight today. This lasted throughout my teenage years. When I was in high school if I knew we would be around a pool or a hot tub I would purposely “forget” my swimsuit because I couldn’t bare the thought of someone seeing me in a swimsuit. Looking back now, it makes me sad that I let my insecurities about my body hold me back in life.”Love the Swim You're In with Rae Everyday

“At 5 foot 10 inches tall and a size 12/14, I am much larger than most women and I felt like a monster compared the women I grew up seeing in the glossy pages of magazines. My journey of accepting my body and loving myself has not been an easy one. For me, seeing women of all sizes in the media like Ashley Graham, Iskra Lawrence, and many others has been a huge factor in loving the parts of my body I once hated. I had to intentionally change my way of thinking about my body. I started by focusing on the things I loved about my body rather than the things I hated. Yes, my stomach rolls over my jeans when I sit down and my thighs are sprinkled with cellulite, but this body is what gives me life and it’s beautiful! My size does not define who I am as a person and that took me a long time to realize.”

“I’m excited to partner with Aerie as part of their #AerieReal campaign. Aerie was one of the first major brands to take a stance against retouched images and promoting an unrealistic body image for women. Aerie made a decision to showcase their models in their natural, unretouched state. They spread the conversation with the #AerieReal campaign, encouraging women to share images of their photoshop-free bodies.”

“I want to thank Aerie for allowing me to be a part of their #AerieReal campaign and for spreading body positivity and helping young girls and women find their confidence. I truly believe that Aerie has been a trailblazer in evoking conversations about unhealthy body standards in the fashion industry. It’s about time that we shatter the false and unrealistic beauty standards we have been surrounded by for far too long.”Love the Swim You're In with Rae Everyday

LOVE THE SWIM YOU’RE IN WITH SASSY RED LIPSTICK

This summer we want YOU to love the swim you’re in! #AerieREAL girl, Sarah from Sassy Red Lipstick shares her journey to  truly loving her body. LOVE THE SWIM YOU’RE IN WITH SASSY RED LIPSTICK

“I receive a cute swimsuit in the mail that I’ve been anxiously waiting to receive. I’ve seen it on so many gorgeous women on Instagram and I can’t wait to take it on my upcoming vacation. I tear open the package as soon as it arrives and retreat to the full-length mirror in my bedroom to put it on. As I pull the strap over my shoulders and look in the mirror, it’s clear that I look different, different than all those perfect images I saw on Instagram that made me want to buy it, different than the model on the website I bought it from. My boobs make the top stretch too tight, my booty swallows the back, my love handles push out the side, and my thighs hug each other. Tears start to well up in my eyes and I take off the suit and return it to its package. I stand there naked, fixating on all those parts that make me different.”

“Sad story, right? Something tells me many women can relate to this past experience of mine. Surrounded by a world of airbrushed images and perfected pixels, it is so hard for even traditionally beautiful women to feel pretty. For a curvy girl like me, there didn’t seem to be a place where I was accurately represented. After all, I am not a slim size 2, but I’m also not a plus size. I’m right in the middle, in some sort of a fashion limbo that society hasn’t quite figured out yet. After years of feeling displaced, I finally realized I had to find my own way of feeling loved and accepted. I knew it had to come from within. And the moment I figured that out was the moment I truly began loving my body.

Of course it didn’t happen overnight, but I told myself that every day I was going to love my body a little more than I did the day before. I was going to stop myself from constantly dwelling on the parts I didn’t like and focus on the ones I did. I decided I was going to express myself through my style and act confident until I truly became it.”

“The past few years have been a huge growth period for me. It feels incredible to actually be able to say that I love my body and have no anxiety about changing it. My big booty and hips that make me a size 10? I love them for giving me a curvy hourglass shape. My love handles that roll over when I bend and turn? They are my sassy statement in a swimsuit. {Trust me ladies, the side roll is SO in right now!} These thick thighs that don’t let any daylight shine between them in photos? My husband says they’re one of my sexiest features. I agree. All these parts make up the real, natural body that is mine. It is feminine, it is strong, it is powerful.”

LOVE THE SWIM YOU’RE IN WITH SASSY RED LIPSTICK

“One of the most beautiful aspects of my newfound confidence is that I am blessed enough to have an audience of women that I get to share it with, women who have felt the exact same way as me and are looking for someone to relate to. The response I get when I post my unretouched body in a swimsuit for the world to see is always so refreshing, encouraging, and empowering. The private messages I get from women wanting to become comfortable in their own skin and learn how to move further along their journey to self-love are so precious to me. Together we share a bond in the important duty of reminding one another how beautiful we actually are.

Now when I get a new swimsuit in the mail, my relationship with my bedroom mirror has become much more pleasant. I wiggle my boobs into place, I stretch the back out to accompany all the extra cushion, and then I look in the mirror and do something crazy: I love myself.”

Love the Swim You’re in with Jenna Kutcher

The adventure begins with you. #AerieREAL girl Jenna Kutcher shares her journey to finding rest, achieving self-love and body acceptance on the island of Maui.

“For the past six years I’ve spent hour after hour hustling after my dreams! After leaving my windowless corporate office, I’ve never looked back. Now a full time photographer, educator, public speaker, and podcaster, my life is filled to the brim with things that set my soul on fire. While some look at the life I’ve built and consider it a “success,” I measure success in terms of rest and presence. For so long I’ve worked from a place of hustle, a place of stress, and I knew that going into this year I wanted to focus on incorporating true rest into our lives.”

“What did that look like for us? Well, it looked like a month long sabbatical in Maui. I’m sure you’re thinking, wait, what? A whole month? Yes. We spent 33 days on the island and it was as magical as it sounds. What people didn’t see behind the scenes was the work that went into making it all happen: my husband left his job of five years to start his own business, we worked double time in January to prepare, we had to kiss our furry pups goodbye, but it was our dream and we made it happen.

This trip to Hawaii was a redemption song for us. Just one year ago we found out we were expecting our first baby while in Maui and celebrated those blissful days on the island. One month after returning home we experienced a miscarriage and had to say goodbye to that life we loved so dearly. As a woman, it was such a painful experience. I hated my body, I felt outside of it, I felt like it had failed me – though I had this peace that there was a bigger story for us.

As we packed for our trip this time around, my suitcase filled with Aerie. I had to smile because just a year ago I was a part of this campaign and my images were from when I was pregnant. As I slipped into my one piece and hit the beach, I finally felt back at home – both in Hawaii and in my skin. I felt stronger, healthier, more emotionally present. Body positivity isn’t just about our outer appearance, it comes from within.”

Love the Swim You're In

“Our month on the island was a time for us to reconnect, to disconnect from work, to dream bigger, to sit on the beach, to explore each corner. It was a time for me to come back to this body that has carried me for 28 years and to celebrate all of the amazing things it can do. Aerie embodies all the things I stand for and in sharing my real, not retouched images I was reminded how important it is for people to take a stand for what they believe in.

I am always shocked at the response when I post things about my body. So may days I would see the images Drew took of me, my eyes would well up with tears about my size ten bod, I would change swim suits, be tempted to cover up, and would vow that I wouldn’t be caught dead at the pool…. But then I would think of you and why I couldn’t hide.

You see, these images don’t do well because of me, it’s because of you. You see yourself in my jiggly thighs, you feel your fears in my cellulite, you hear the voice in your head when you see my extra loving love handles, you feel more at home in my wide hips, you relate to one boob being a bit perkier than the other, you feel the shame in oversized arms… BUT (and this is a BIG but) we are all so much more than all of that.”

Love the Swim You're In

“Maybe it’s simply refreshing to see a double digit sized body baring it all or just a body that isn’t retouched. Whatever it is, I am loving myself a little harder and praying that you’ll do the same! I am not a number on a scale or a size in my clothes, neither are you!

Our time was incredible, SO incredible we ended up purchasing a second home on the island. It’s become a sacred place to us – a place of healing and rest. We are thrilled to get to spend more time in our bathing suits on the beach and are even more thrilled to open our doors to our friends, family, and followers and let them into our little slice of heaven. Oh, what an amazing redemption song it is.”

“There’s nothing better than waking up on a day with no formal plans or obligations. Just an open day to do whatever makes my heart happy. “I’m one of those people who goes to bed verrrry excited to wake up and make coffee in the morning. It’s therapeutic, and I enjoy the process from grinding the beans to brewing it in my French press. It makes me feel calm as a clam 🌊 – which is how I feel when watering my plant babies. These tiny and seemingly mundane moments can actually be some of the most beautiful little details that make your mood 💯!”

“Consider this a version of mind-play – It’s my job to write, so grabbing my journal and writing down my dreams and ideas is exciting to me. Whether it’s writing song lyrics, full blog posts, or even simple lists, I always appreciate the little dreamstorms. You never know if an idea you have on a rainy Sunday afternoon will turn into something real and substantial someday. Give your mind a break from the constant noise of social media – put pen to paper and see what happens when your mind is at ease and has time to wander. ☁️”

“You gotta move to groove. Exercise doesn’t have to come from a superficial place. Staying active keeps your mind, body and spirit healthy, and that should always be a priority. I feel super energized after a sweaty yoga sesh or a breezy walk around my neighborhood. Find what it is that excites your spirit – maybe it’s rock climbing, biking, or dancing. You don’t have to be a slave to a gym if that’s not your jam. It’s certainly not mine! #YogiProbs” “Aerie empowers women to be who they are in their realest and rawest forms. I love the fit, feel, and look of Aerie’s clothing, and I feel incredible knowing I’m supporting a brand that supports me right back. Celebrating diversity and being vulnerable is what makes us human and what brings us together. That and high-waisted yoga pants.”
