STYLED 4 WAYS: THE ATHLETIC AESTHETIC

Don’t call it a comeback trend: “athleisure” is here to stay.

The last few years have seen a slow-but-steady blurring of the line that separates activewear from streetwear, to the point that the two are now nearly indistinguishable. Menswear as a whole has treaded into more casual, sporty territory, while activewear continues to adopt an increasingly streamlined, minimalist, wear-it-anywhere aesthetic.

And here’s where it becomes clear that this shift is more than a passing trend: with it, we’ve ALSO seen a general shift in public perception. No longer is it considered “lazy” or “sloppy” to wear your workout clothes outside the gym, and now more than ever, it’s seen as totally acceptable to mix activewear into to your everyday wardrobe — in some cases, even your work wardrobe.

The bottom line: everyone likes to be comfortable and everyone likes to look good. So when the stars align to make those two things happen simultaneously, repeat after us: YOU. TAKE. ADVANTAGE.

How, exactly? That’s where Laura, our Lead Stylist, comes in. Below, she shows us four easy-to-replicate ways to incorporate activewear into your everyday looks — WITHOUT sacrificing your style.

LOOK #1: MINIMAL + MODERN

Go for a cool, tonal look with head-to-toe black and grey hues. Laura’s picks: these space-dyed grey shorts, a simple black hoodie (the grey trim is a small detail that does a lot to tie the whole look together) and black sneakers with a bright-white contrast sole.

At a glance, this look could pass as high-end streetwear (closer inspection reveals essential performance attributes like reflective trim, thumb holes and bonded zippers).

AE Active Hoodie | AEO Longline Crew T-Shirt | AE Active Side Stripe Jogger

LOOK #2: STYLE MEETS COMFORT

Believe it or not, this outfit features the same grey shorts from the first look!

Styled with a classic chambray shirt, an olive-green varsity jacket and simple white slip-ons, they take on a whole new vibe — casual-cool yet totally pulled together.

Shop the Look:

New Balance 530 Suede Sneaker | AEO Fitted Baseball Hat | AEO Canvas Sneaker

LOOK #3: RETRO SPORT

For our third look, Laura created a sporty, ‘90s-inspired feel by pairing slim-fitting joggers with light layers and a modern graphic hoodie.

Added bonus: the tapered leg and varsity-striped trim make these joggers the perfect modern-day replacement for those old, baggy track pants (but they’re just as comfortable!).

Shop the Look:

AE Active Hoodie | AE Active Reflective Colorblock T-Shirt | AE Active Drawstring Short | Clarks® Trigenic Flex Sneaker

LOOK #4: WEEKEND VIBES

Our final look is proof that a few minor tweaks can completely transform your aesthetic.

Laura took the layered tees and joggers from our third look and gave them a sport-to-street makeover by swapping the hoodie for a timeless denim jacket, adding crisp white sneakers and topping it off with a fresh baseball cap.

The result? A laid-back, put-together look that you could wear literally anywhere. (Well, okay, maybe not to that black-tie wedding. You get the drift.)

Shop the Look:

AEO Reversible Embroidered Bomber Jacket | AEO Indigo Chambray Shirt | Reebok Club C 85 Sneaker

10 questions with Parkour Athlete: Willie “WilJay” Moore

We’re introducing our innovative AEO Flex/4 denim technology, and partnered with an awesome WFPF parkour athlete to showcase the revolutionary versatility of our jeans and what you can do in them. Flex/4 is our latest 360° 4-way flex denim that follows your every move, retains its shape, and provides max comfort. We were so impressed by (Willie’s) athletic skills in our Flex/Denim video that we wanted to get to know him a little better. Read on for our full interview!

When did you become interested in Parkour?
I’ve always been doing parkour, actually. I was always a pretty outgoing kid trying to do the next big thing that my friends couldn’t. Although I very specifically remembering doing my first back flip in elementary school recess, I never knew what parkour was until I found videos on the internet in middle school. I was also very influenced by the action movies and cartoons at the time.

How much time do you spend practicing in a week?
Aside from training a few hours a week, I practice parkour in my own way each and every day. Parkour to me is more mental than it is physical. In its simplicity it’s all about overcoming the obstacles that are in front of you while finding new and creative ways to express yourself along the way. In a weird way I have grown up with Parkour at the forefront of my life and have been its student ever since I was a little boy.

What was the most dangerous Parkour move you’ve done to date? Any injuries?
I once did a double side flip from a pretty high object to a lower one. I sprained my foot first attempt.

What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
I have never had any formal training in anything I have ever done. I really think big; sometimes too big for my current circumstance. I truly take pride in my ability to adapt to any situation. Everything is a learning experience and a tool that you can use in some shape or form. Attention to detail is everything.

What was your favorite thing about Flex denim?
The AEO Flex line is simply incredible? The Flex denim line is so far the most comfortable clothing that i have ever worn outside of my house! I have recommended them to everyone I know.

Where else would you wear AEO Flex to?
So far I have worn AEO Flex wear to a photo shoot, a video shoot, a stunt shoot, a business meeting, through a holiday, and out lounging with friends. I believe a better question is where wouldn’t I wear them? Hmm.

What advice would you offer aspiring Parkour athletes?
My advice to aspiring Parkour athletes as well as anyone pursuing a passion is to always be unique. It is always way easier to be yourself than it is to be just like your competition. Being unique is what makes you valuable! Oh and have fun meeting other weirdos like yourself jumping about.

Any noteworthy projects on the horizon? Are there any projects out there you’d like the opportunity to work on?
I make YouTube videos every week. The goal is to grow my audience. Unlike most entertainers that use social media as a stepping stone, I feel that YouTube has become a large enough platform for me to become a successful, creative, and transparent influencer. I want to be the director, actor, and stuntman. On the other hand I would love to be a well-known secret agent like James Bond or a video game character! Who knows?

20120105_InstagramCrops_IG_1

Favorite movie of all time?
Wow that’s a really hard question! I would have to say that it hasn’t been produced yet. It’s still sitting in my dresser waiting to be directed! I’m kidding! I would have to say that I have a ton of favorite movies but never a favorite of all time past or present. As one of the many runners up, I would have loved to be in the magic movie Now You See Me.

Top 3 on your bucket list?
I want to inspire the youth and give the kids the same hope that I was given by so many great human beings. I want to travel the world with those who need to see it for its many differences and similarities. Last but not least I want to look back at my life when everything said and done and simply be able to say I lived the best life I possibly could in my very own and unique way. I was totally human.
