#AskJenny Question of the Week: What to Wear Under White

With Labor Day Weekend quickly approaching, we’re scrambling to figure out how to get the most wear out of our favorite white pieces while the sun’s still shining. Luckily, Jenny Altman, fit and style expert for Aerie, is here with her pro tips for pieces that are perfect under your white jeans, shorts, tops, and LWD’s (Little White Dresses!). Her advice is here just in time to start planning the perfect look for the holiday weekend, or that end of summer party you’re throwing!

Q: What are the best pieces to wear under my white clothes? I don’t want my bra or undies to show through!

A:  What to wear under white…NOT WHITE!

Why not white? It’s just too bright under white clothing. If your goal is to keep your intimates “intimate”, then you really need to go with a nude tone. This color could be the actual color nude, but could also be a brown, beige or even light pink, depending on your skin tone. Keep in mind, that no matter what your skin tone (even if you are darker skinned or super fair), the color nude will always be better than white. The nude blends into any skin tone better than a white or a black.

For bras, if you want to show off a colorful piece under your white top, then go for it! If you’re looking for a piece that will stay hidden, however, Aerie carries bras in a range of nude shades, from Fair to Dark Maple.

Basic doesn’t have to be boring…shop a rainbow of nude tones in our Best Basics Shop!

For bras, I love Sunnie, Charley, and the Lace Bare Bra in Natural Nude.

Our Best Basics Shop is a great place to look for bras and undies that come in multiple nude shades, to find the best match for your specific skin tone.

For undies, it’s as much about the color as it is about the undie design itself. Go for the most flat, seamless option you can find. You don’t want heavy lines showing through.

Our Vintage Lace undies come in multiple fits and nude tones, and the lace is smooth so the texture doesn’t peek through. These undies work great under white or light clothing that isn’t super fitted.

The super smooth Vintage Lace collection is a great quick fix for minimizing visible undie lines!

For a TOTALLY hidden look, the Outta-Sight undie in Buff is the best. No lines and no color to be seen with these! The undies come in a range of fits from thong to boybrief, so pick the amount of coverage that’s most comfortable for you and works best with the type of clothing you’re wearing.

Our Outta-Sight collection is your best secret weapon!

With these tips, you’ll be ready to rock your favorite white styles to celebrate the end of summer!

#AskJenny Question of the Week: Will a Demi Bra Work for Me?

This week, our Fit and Style expert, Jenny Altman, tackles your questions on bra coverage! Read her pro tips to learn what amount of coverage is best for your shape and size.

sofie

Rachelle is all smiles in one of Jenny’s full coverage picks, the Sofie bra!

Q: I would really like to wear a demi bra, but I am fuller in that part of my breasts, so they pop out. Is that normal? What bras do you recommend that have full coverage?

A:  Great question! A demi bra is a bra that covers only half to three quarters of the breast, which means that it doesn’t give you as much coverage as a full coverage bra. A full coverage bra comes at least an inch or two higher across the breast, hence the name “full” coverage.

Another difference is what a demi cup bra does for your shape. It actually tilts the breast inward, creating more lift and coverage than your standard full coverage bra.

For you, your shape may work better with a full coverage bra. But before you give up on a demi (they are pretty gorgeous!), make sure you are trying on the right size. You may need to go up a cup size from what you have been wearing in that type of style. I suggest you go into an Aerie store and have a fitting with one of our Bra Experts. They also will have lots of suggestions for different style demi bras you can try, to see if we do have the right demi for you. Once you have your right size, trying on lots of styles is key to finding the perfect bra for you!

Sunnie Stretch Lightly Lined Bra

The Sunnie bra is one of Jenny’s go-to full coverage options.

If a demi is not your answer, then let’s certainly go for a full coverage bra, no problem! My personal favorites would have to be the Sunnie, Katie and Sofie. I think that if you get creative with fun colors and look for special details like lace, you will feel just as pretty in the full coverage as you would in the demi.

To see more of our full coverage and demi coverage options, shop all bras at Aerie.com! Our Bra Guide allows you to see bras in your cup size, to help you pick your perfect fit. Try a few to find the best style for you!

#AskJenny Question of the Week: Multiway Bras that Do It All

Most of us Aerie girls have at least one multi-way bra in our bra wardrobe…but are we using it to its fullest potential? Our fit and style expert, Jenny Altman (@ILoveAGood), answers your latest #AskJenny question on how multi-ways can be so much more than strapless, below!

Q: I know there are other ways you can wear Aerie’s convertible bras besides just strapless – but I’m lost! What exactly are the different ways to wear a multi-way bra?

A: The great thing about having a multi-way bra in your closet is that it is so versatile! You do not need a bra for each outfit, you just need a great do-it-all bra. Aerie offers several multi-way bras in both pushup and lightly lined…functioning as 6+ bras in one!

My personal favorite is the Mia Multi-Way pushup bra…it adds just the right amount of lift that’s perfect with everything from your strappy tanks to most formal dresses. A great everyday option is our Audrey Multi-Way bra for you lightly lined girls!

If you only have budget for one multi-way bra, I always suggest nude for maximum versatility.

The animation below gives a step-by-step guide for all the different ways to wear your favorite multi-way (here, it’s the Mia Vintage Lace Multi-Way pushup bra). With so many ways to wear, this bra can really go the distance – and stretch your dollar!

So, Aerie girls, don’t let the straps on your newest multi-way purchase collect dust in your drawer! Use them to their full potential and you’ll see what a versatile must-have a multi-way bra is in your wardrobe. They are truly the best investment bras ever!

#AskJenny Question of the Week: Laundering Your Aerie Undies

This week’s question is all about laundering your Aerie Undies! Our takeaways? Not all undies are created equal (when it comes to laundering, at least!)…and some need just a little extra TLC. Read on for Jenny’s tips and tricks on laundering your undies!

FP5T1275 - crop

Jenny’s got the quick fix to keeping your Aerie undies just like new!

Q: What’s the best way to wash my Aerie undies?

A: Now that you’ve got new undies you love, you want to make sure they last. It’s just as important to take good care of your undies as you would your bras, swimsuits, and clothes.

For sturdy cotton undies, go ahead and throw them in the washer and dryer as you normally would. However, for lace undies, or even undies that are on the delicate side, I don’t recommend washing them like the basics. Washing items in hot water, with harsh things like jeans and towels, can destroy anything that’s a bit sensitive.

For all lace undies, I do like to give them a wash by hand either in the sink, or in the shower while you’re showering. They wash so easily and dry really quickly when you hang them on a hanger or over a doorknob. If you do want to stick with the laundry machine, do a gentle cycle once a week and put undies in with other delicate items like knits and blouses. I use cold water all the time (more environmentally friendly and laundry friendly) and I don’t use the dryer for delicates. If you notice your undies get caught around the agitator (the piece in the middle of the machine), then stick the undies in a laundry bag. Those agitators are death for delicates!

#AskJenny Question of the Week: Backless Doesn’t Have to Mean Braless!

What to wear under your tricky summer tops and dresses this season? This week, you all wanted to know how to stay chic this summer without breaking the bank. Jenny’s back with some expert answers to your biggest summer style SOS!

Jenny's here to turn your bra "oh no's" into "whoa's"!

Q: Which type of bra would you recommend for summery shirts such as flowy, backless, strapless, spaghetti straps, and cross backs? I have a lot of fun shirts and a couple dresses I want to wear (preferably without a tanktop underneath), but my bras always seem to look funky underneath. The bra will almost always show on the sides, the straps might show, or just don’t flow well with the shirt. It’s a pain and makes me consider going bra-less. I don’t want to buy a bra for every shirt because i’m on a college girl’s budget. Please help!

Jenny:  I LOVE this bra question. It really is on everyone’s mind for summer!

You do not need a bra for each outfit, you just need a great do-it-all bra.

First up is a bra I can’t live without, the best investment bra ever; a multi-way bra. Multi way bras are at minimum a great strapless bra, and it’s up to you whether you want padded or not. I like the Mia Multi-Way Pushup bra since it gives great lift and has some oomph in the cups.

I wear it mostly as a strapless, but with a quick change of the straps, you can wear the bra as a halter, one shoulder, deep v-halter, and more! The versatility makes this bra function as 8+ bras in one.

Mia Multi-Way

Have it all with the Mia Multi-Way! While she’s a great strapless option, she can be styled 8 different ways for all your tricky tops.

Second for me is another life changing bra, the Lace Bare Pushup bra. (We also have our original, non-pushup Bare Bra for all you lightly lined ladies!)

bare bra

Our Lace Pushup Bare Bra is one of Jenny’s favorite tricks for getting the backless look…without going braless!

This bra allows you the freedom of going braless (no bra across the back!) while getting the coverage and support of a strapless. The adhesive is amazing (just remember…no deodorant, powder, perfume or lotion where the bra goes or else it won’t stick!). This bra will work with everything, from a backless formal dress to an open back tank top. Take good care of this bra and you’ll go back to it in your drawer forever to solve tons of outfit dilemmas.

With either option, go with nude for the most versatility with your outfits!

That’s it for today! Check out more quick fixes from Jenny here, and look out for more of her answers to your questions each Monday right here on the Aerie blog!

#AskJenny Questions of the Week: Gapping and Uneven Bust Size

You asked, Jenny answered! Read on to hear Jenny’s quick fixes to some of the biggest bra fit FAQ’s you were asking about this week. Jenny's here to turn your bra "oh no's" into "whoa's"! Q: How do I avoid the dreaded “gap” between the cups and my body when wearing bras and swim?

Jenny: We have all experienced the “gap” when trying on bras and swim tops. Most often it’s due to the wrong choice in bra style, although fit can play a role. Next time you come into your Aerie store, have a fitting to make sure you are wearing your right size (or, if you don’t have a store near you, measure yourself using our handy measuring guide).

Once you know you’re wearing the right size, make sure you try on multiple bra styles to pick the best one for you. There’s no such thing as “standard” size or shaped breasts, which is why there are so many bra types, like demi, balconette and full cup. It’s like shopping for jeans! We aren’t all standard straight leg girls. Take a handful of bra styles into the fitting room with you.Chances are, that if you are getting that gap, that your breasts need some fullness at the bottom. This doesn’t mean you need MAJOR padding (that is a personal choice), but something with a little lift. I recommend styles that are not full coverage, like a demi, with a little push in the bottom of the cups. My picks would be the Harper or the Bridget.

Another option to solve the gap is to go for a bra with stretch at the top of the cup. The Aerie Lace Racerback Bralette or the Aerie Softest Lace Perky Bralette would be perfect. Instead of showing gap, they hug the skin and lay perfectly on most of us!

Gapping and uneven bust issues? Cue Jenny to the rescue with some insider tips!

Gapping and uneven bust issues? Cue Jenny to the rescue with some insider tips!

Q: Do you have any advice for girls with uneven busts (one breast is larger than the other)?

Jenny: The question on EVERY girls mind! So many girls come to me with this question, and I can’t stress enough how totally normal this is. It is also an easy fix.

Go for a bra that best fits the larger/fuller breast. Once that girl is great, then you just need to add push into the smaller cup to even them out.

If the difference in breast size is small, I like bras and swim tops with removable pads for a super easy fix. For bras with removable pads, two of my go-to’s are Emma and Mia, and I love Aerie’s Bandeau and Triangle bikini tops for swim. Just take the pad out of the larger cup and voila! You’re set. You can also try doubling up with the pad you removed to create even more lift in your smaller bust size.

If the difference between the two breasts is fairly large, then go for an easy trick I used as a stylist when dressing celebs (whose boobs were uneven, too!). Get a pair of Aerie Push-Up Lifts (also known as “chicken cutlets”) and place one into the smaller side. Just make sure you lift up your breast and tuck the Push-Up Lift between your breast and the bra so that it gives a natural push and won’t fall out.

Thanks, Jenny! Remember, you can always ask Jenny your fit and style questions by tweeting @Aerie with #AskJenny or by emailing AskJenny@ae.com! We’ll be posting her quick tips for your questions weekly, so be sure to check back on the blog for more!

xoxo,

Aerie
