What Inspired Alison’s Look:
“I always prefer to keep things simple. By pairing slouchy boyfriend shorts with a knit tank I’m able to be comfortable and still feel cute. I also love that it lets the swimsuit be the statement piece! The color is bold, the crochet detail makes it anything but basic and the back gives it a hint of sexiness. And the hat totally ties everything together.”National Straw Hat Day with Blogger Ally Cog National Straw Hat Day with Blogger Ally Cog                      Get Alison’s Look: Panama Hat Beach Tank | Crochet One-Piece | AEO Denim Rolled Boy Midi

Follow Her Friday: Rachel Hollis

This week we’re inspired by the courageous, career-driven, body-loving blogger, Rachel Hollis! Her proud bikini photo received tons of media buzz and we couldn’t help but want to learn more about this beautiful, mother of three.

Aerie: We love your body positive message – what inspired you to share this photo with your readers?

Rachel: So many reporters asked me this and the answer is kind of silly. I theme my Instagram every month to a color and that month’s color was orange… the exact shade of my cute new bikini top. We were in Cancun and I thought it would be a cute picture and so I had hubs snap a bunch. I am no kind of model and being in a swimsuit feels especially awkward so the one I chose is the one where I’m laughing at how silly I felt. When I saw it I noticed my stretch marks right away but I figured plenty of my followers are moms and have them too so I just decided to post it anyway. I couldn’t have anticipated what would happen with that picture, it still blows my mind.

Aerie Follow Her Friday: Rachel Hollis - Body Positive message

Aerie: How did you get started with The Chic Site?

Rachel: I was an event planner for ten years in Los Angeles and initially I started The Chic Site as a virtual way to house all my ideas. At the time I thought people would want to see pictures from fancy parties but what I quickly learned was that they were much more interested in recipes and parties from my own real life. When I started to focus on my personal style (down home with a little fancy thrown in) that’s when the site really started to gain a following.

Aerie: What’s your favorite part about running a lifestyle website?

Rachel: There are a lot of things to love. I’m my own boss, which is a great feeling. And I work with an incredibly talented group of people that I got to hand pick. In the words of Confucius, “Choose a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Also, I truly love the idea that we’re being helpful to women who read our site. Whether it’s a recipe, a makeup tip or a tutorial on how to decorate your bedroom I want our readers to come away feeling inspired and encouraged.

Aerie: Do you have any advice you would give to girls interested in starting their own blog or business?

Rachel: Be yourself, everyone else is already taken. Seriously, there are so many businesses and blogs out there and the only way you’re going to make a splash is with a genuine message that is authentically you. Also, if you want to start a business you can’t treat it as a hobby. A lot of new bloggers decide to throw up a post here or there without structure behind it. Build an editorial calendar, collaborate with people smarter than you, take yourself seriously and others will to.

Aerie: Do you have a favorite quote or mantra?

Rachel: There is no such thing as luck, there is only preparation meeting opportunity at a moment in time.

Aerie: What’s your favorite Aerie product?

Rachel: I love a great t-shirt but I am such a sucker for a summer sweater! Haha, only in LA would someone consider the term summer sweater but it’s a real thing! You know the kind with a loose weave or the ones that are so light it’s like wearing cotton? I love them! It’s a way to feel cozy even if the weather is warm.

Aerie: What does being #AerieREAL mean to you?

Rachel: #AerieREAL is the idea of not just being comfortable with but grateful for who you are today. I love the idea of wanting to better your self, to become a better person inside and out. But that doesn’t mean that who you are right now (at this exact weight, with that exact hair, with your nose and your smile) isn’t awesome. Celebrate where you are, the real you because the real you is fabulous!

Thank you, Rachel! Be sure to check out The Chic Site and follow her on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter!

xoxo,

Aerie

Real Talk with Beauty for Real

Good beauty products not only make you look beautiful, but make you feel beautiful. Our new Beauty For Real For Aerie collection does just that. We had an opportunity to sit down with Leslie, the founder of Beauty for Real, to find out more about this collaboration and inspiration behind the amazing product line.

Aerie: Can you tell us about Beauty for Real and how it got started?

Leslie: As a make up artist with the perspective of working with thousands of women over the years, I recognized a need to address beauty from a more realistic point of view.  Both in terms of the way products are developed and produced and also the way they are presented to the consumer.  Great, natural ingredients, simple straight forward and functional packaging along with a more “real” approach to photography and models is our highest goal.

Real Talk with Beauty for Real

Aerie: Beauty for Real for Aerie is all about enhancing your natural beauty. Can you tell us what inspired the collection?

Leslie: Gorgeous skin is always the canvas for looking beautiful and because this is a summer collection where more skin is exposed, we focused on enhancing and highlighting the skin.

Aerie: We love that these products contain natural ingredients. Can you explain this process?

Leslie: There are many old natural remedies that are tried and true, but there are also new natural ingredients that are being discovered everyday.  We work with our research and development chemists to utilize the most natural ingredients in the most beneficial way.

Aerie: The Sugar Rush Scrub smells delicious! When is the best time to apply?

Leslie: Of course, it can be used morning or night in the shower, but I love to wake up with it in the morning as a reinforcement to my morning coffee.  The brown sugar and coffee extract are like a sweet, yummy latte without the calories!

Real Talk with Beauty for Real

Aerie: The Beauty For Real for Aerie Sun Kissed Lip Gloss offers the perfect combination of moisture and shine. Can you tell us about the two different shades?

Leslie: They do have lots of great hydrating ingredients; Aloe Vera, Avocado Oil along with super anti oxidants; Green Tea Extract and Grape Seed Oil.  Not only are they terrific summer colors, but the benefits are substantial.  Pink Sands is really like an enhanced natural lip color and Sun-shine gives a bit of nude gold.

Real Talk with Beauty for Real

Aerie: The Aerie Beauty For Real Glow Stick comes in three different shades – High Tide, Cocoa Cabana and South Peach. What is the best way to apply this pretty bronzing illuminator?

Leslie: They can be used individually, but I like to use all three!  Use High Tide as a highlighter anywhere you want to create a luminescent glow- on the tops of your cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose, on the cupids bow.  South Peach is an amazingly fresh blush color- use it on the apples of your cheeks for a subtle pop of color.  Coco Cabana is a bronzer that gives you the sun kissed summer glow you want without the sun exposure- blend it along your hairline, below your cheekbones and a touch on your nose and chin.  Apply them from the stick and blend with your fingers, the creamy texture melts right into the skin for a most natural finish.  They are also great to use on you collar bones and shoulders!

Real Talk with Beauty for Real

Aerie: The Sea & Surf Spray is a summer must-have! Do you have any tips for how to achieve perfect beach waves?

Leslie: I live in Miami where beach hair is the only way to go in the summer when it’s hot and humid.  After showering, you can spray a bit in your hair, then let it air dry. When it’s nearly completely dry, spray a large section and then scrunch it up for a few seconds to set. The Meadowfoam Seed Oil conditions your hair and keeps it from drying out when you’re in the sun and wind. It makes your hair smell like heaven!

Real Talk with Beauty for Real

Aerie: What’s your favorite Beauty for Real for Aerie product?

Leslie: I really love them all, but I have to say, I’ve already used up 2 jars of Sugar Rush!  It’s the way it smells and my skin feels so soft and hydrated after using it. I’ve become obsessed and have to use it everyday.

Aerie: What does being #AerieREAL mean to you?

Leslie: I love the idea that Aerie is more honest with its idea of what’s beautiful.  Everyone has imperfections and it’s great when we can easily accept them, enhance our best features, feel great and get on with living a beautiful life.

Festival Faves with Color Me Courtney

Whether you go all out for festival season or give it a subtle nod, our festival faves are sure to bring out your inner boho babe.

We asked our girl Color Me Courtney to show us what she would wear to a festival. Between the crochet, destroyed denim and pop of color, it’s safe to say that we’re in festival heaven.

Festival Faves with Color Me Courtney

What Inspired Courtney’s Look:
“For this festival-esqe look I turned to Aerie & American Eagle, because they have a little bit of that boho vibe without being too bananas about it. When I needed festival fashion, they were the perfect partner for creating this chillaaxxeddd look – that’s perfect for Coachella or just somewhere coastal (ps is it summer yet?).”

Festival Faves with Color Me Courtney

“A girly-lacey bikini in a fun pop of color, prevented me from wearing a bra (score) while providing a little color pop when layered under a flowy poncho! I paired it with basic distressed denim shorts, an easy basic and must have for Spring/summer before adding studded sandals, a crocheted backpack and black sunnies. Oh and so you could still recognize me, I added a bright orange lip ;)”

Follow Her Friday: Ashley Williams

We’re inspired each day by the stories you share that show how you’re #AerieREAL. This week we’re sharing the story of 26 year-old Ashley Williams, a graduate of University of Southern California who has used her focus in broadcast and digital journalism to launch her own inspirational social network, RIZZARR. Read on below to learn more about Ashley and to follow her journey!

Follow Her Friday: Ashley Williams

Meet Ashley Williams, our Follow Her Friday feature of the week!

Aerie: Hi, Ashley! Can you tell us a bit about RIZZARR?

Ashley: Rizzarr is based on the concept of the ripple effect… how one person can generate ripples of change in the world that can impact numerous people. RIZZARR is a news website that is combined with a social network and is targeted to Millennials. We have an editorial team but we also have a team that works on our product development and managing the social network element. Users can connect with, chat, and inspire their friends and other users from all around the world, but they can also post writing to their profile or submit it to the RIZZARR team to review, edit, and publish out to our main audience. I believe this is a new form of journalism that young people can take part in and really begin to take part in creating change that they wish to see and to disseminate changes or initiatives happening in their community.

Aerie: We love your entrepreneurial spirit. What is your ultimate dream job?

Ashley: I think my ultimate dream job is doing what I am doing now, which is to own and manage my own company as well as to use it to inspire, empower, and uplift young people around the world. I would love to travel to different countries too as we scale to help with the company’s development. My other ultimate dream job that I wanted was to host my own show for a major news company. I am very thankful to have been given this opportunity early in my career and to been able to see that come to pass.

Ashley loves to travel! Here she is in Egypt near the Sphinx. What a shot!

Aerie: Do you have a role model? If so who is he/ she and why does he/ she inspire you?

Ashley: I do. For me, my role models are Sara Blakely, Oprah Winfrey, Steve Jobs, Chris Guillebeau, President Obama, and my parents. I really admire these individuals because they defied the odds and they stuck to their ultimate passions and dreams, despite all of the setbacks or situations they encountered. They never gave up on their dreams or what they believed in and they have led people to believe that anything is possible and that they too can put a dent in the universe. They just have to believe in themselves and never give up.

Aerie: What does being #AerieREAL mean to you?
Ashley: It means fully and authentically embracing who you are, who you want to be, and who you will become while never allowing naysayers, doubters, or haters get in the way. Living your life to the fullest with no regrets.

Aerie: Do you have a favorite quote or mantra? Do tell!
Ashley: I do! It’s by Steve Jobs: “Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.’

And I just love the mantra of these:

“We cannot become what we need to be by remaining what we are.” –  Max Depree

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” – Steve Jobs

really happy-favorite one

Thanks for sharing the #AerieREAL love, Ashley!

Ashley loves mentoring young people. During her career, she often visits schools to talk about journalism and RIZZARR.

Aerie: We must ask – do you have a favorite Aerie bra fit?

Ashley: I like a couple of them. I like Jennifer Lightly Lined, Hannah in Strapless and in Multi-way, and Brooke! I think these all really help with elevating my body more and my curves. And honestly, they are just really comfortable and fit how I want to be presented.

Aerie: Last but, not least…do you have a secret skill or talent? Spill!
Ashley: I used to be really involved in acting and still believe it is one of my passions that I will tap into my later in my life. As a result, I can speak in multiple accents.

Thank you, Ashley! Want to stay in touch with Ashley? Be sure to follow her on Twitter and her network RIZZARR on Instagram!

xoxo,

Aerie
