Get to Know #AerieREAL Role Model Jenna Kutcher

Jenna Kutcher has always been #AerieREAL, but now – she’s officially an #AerieREAL Role Model!

You could say Jenna’s new title has been a long time coming. This entrepreneur, podcaster and girl next door ALWAYS keeps it #AerieREAL, and she’s been part of the Aerie family for as long as we can remember. Read on to see how Jenna has grown with Aerie and why we can’t wait to see what else she has to share as our newest role model.

You’ve been part of the #AerieREAL family for quite a while, what are you looking forward to sharing with our community as an #AerieREAL Role Model?

Let me first say: PINCH ME. I am so, so thankful for this opportunity and yes, it’s been years in the making. As a Role Model, I want to empower women to know that they are never alone and always enough. If a girl living in small-town Minnesota can “make it” as an entrepreneur, a dreamer, and now an AerieREAL Role Model, so can you. At the end of the day, I’m just a normal girl with a mission to change the world and I sincerely pray to provide a relatable example for women while always promising to keep it real. Life isn’t always perfect, self-love isn’t always easy, but there is so much power in simply showing up and I promise to do that!

Entrepreneur, podcaster, boss babe – you keep busy! How do you do it?

It takes a village! Can I just say that I have the most amazing team of women surrounding me? Over the last seven years I’ve grown a business and a brand that serves hundreds of thousands of humans every single day and I could never do it alone. I’m always dreaming, always thinking of ways to serve others, and I have the most amazing community around me helping make it all happen! What started as a means of escaping a windowless office corporate job at the age of 23 has turned into an empire with so many different facets. It’s such a gift to wake up and do what I love every single day!

What’s a typical day in the life of Jenna Kutcher?

Should I really tell you? You’re going to think I’m the most boring person on the earth, but here goes! We wake up with the sun (no alarm clocks for the Kutchers) and usually lay in bed and talk about how cute our dogs are…. yes, they sleep with us. Drew (my husband) and I head to the gym or I’ll go on a walk with the dogs and listen to the podcast. Then I get to work for the day either at a local coffee shop or from the couch! We try to break for lunch together and for a midday dog walk, working from home is such a blessing. Then Drew will make us dinner (thank goodness I married a man that loves to cook and clean) and we will snuggle up on the couch and watch a little riveting television. We are obsessed with shows like The Bachelor, MTV The Challenge, Project Runway, hilarious TV shows that are so far from our real life. We walk the dogs before we head to bed and then read before we fall asleep. Our lives are simple and slow but I love it, it’s either that or I’m traveling the world for work and so they balance each other out quite well!

What makes you #AerieREAL?

I’m not afraid to talk about the reality and the challenge of what it looks like to have to choose self-love every day – let me tell you, it’s not easy. I pride myself on not just showing the highlight reel but on keeping it real. The internet has walked through some of life’s greatest triumphs with us but they’ve always witnessed some of our greatest heartbreaks. I want to be a voice for women and someone that allows others to say, “me too!” Now, as an expectant mom, I am more conscious than ever at how amazing our imperfect bodies are, in the strength we possess, and in the fact that our bodies should be celebrated for all they can do. As we enter this new season after 2.5 years of fertility struggles and loss, I hope to share this journey with the world as my body changes and we prepare for our baby. Being #AerieREAL isn’t reserved for a certain body type or age or season of life, it’s for all of us. For me, it will always be real, not retouched.

Real Talk With Nia Pettitt

We met Nia last year, and since then she’s been inspiring us with her honesty about natural beauty, insecurities and confidence. Nia’s curls were always huge part of her life—she co-founded the Go With The Fro Tour, a movement to empower women with natural curls—but when she realized that her hair was starting to define her, she knew she had to let it go. We talked to Nia about that process and what she learned from it. Read on for more from this #AerieREAL Role Model!

Real Talk With Nia Pettitt

You’ve recently changed your look! Tell us why you decided to cut your hair.

I knew I wanted to let go of my hair when the image of the woman I aspired to be wasn’t who I was. I was bored of looking the same every day just for validation through social media. I felt unhappy and drained but I couldn’t figure out why until I listed all the things I felt were holding me back. I wanted a fresh start and to completely step out of my comfort zone to finally see myself. I feel amazing, I feel so confident and free.

Real Talk With Nia Pettitt

What did you learn in the process?

That you should never remain in a career, relationship or friendship just because of the comfort. I could’ve remained talking about hair just because it was what I built my brand on but it wasn’t what I was truly passionate about anymore. I also learned that some people will be in your life just because of how you look which is sad but it made me appreciate the people in my life who love me for me. I also learned that I used to spend way too much time doing my hair because I can now sleep for an extra hour!

Real Talk With Nia Pettitt

#AerieREAL is about standing together and feeling confident and comfortable in your own skin. How do you personally identify with that message?

I have never felt more confident and comfortable in my skin as my comfort used to lie within my hair. I hid all of my insecurities underneath my hair because people always gravitated towards it. At first it was fun being known for my hair but I couldn’t keep up with the image of always having to look the same, I felt obliged to always wear my hair out for the gratification of others and thats when I knew I was no longer living for myself. I now identify with it through acceptance of my natural beauty, my intelligence, my kind soul and my ability to always evolve.

Real Talk With Nia PettittWho is your role model and why?

My role model is the older version of myself. We all have this idea in our head of who we want to be and sometimes we never know how we are going to get there. Whether that is a healthier version, a smarter one, a version that is more stylish or more happy. My version is a woman that doesn’t allow likes to validate her worth, that is free with herself to be herself at all times and never feel like she has to be in a box.

Real Talk With Nia Pettitt

What makes you an #AerieREAL Role Model?

I no longer look at my flaws as flaws. I look at my stretch marks as lines of love from girl to woman. I look at my acne scars as reminders to stop stressing over unnecessary things. I look at the hair which grows on my skin as a blanket and my belly button as a cool and unique part of me. I am an #AerieREAL Role Model because I understand that the natural me is the best version of me.

Aerie x Darling Retreat

We partnered with Darling Magazine to bring a strong group of #AerieREAL women together for a weekend full of self-discovery and inspiration. For 3 days, 21 women from all over the world shared their stories and bonded through group workshops, family-style dinners and adventures to the beach. We talked, we laughed, we cried… and the love was REAL!

We started each day with a little flow and a lot of fuel. At morning yoga, we set an intention for our practice: clearing our heads, finding balance, dedicating the time to someone or something. It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you find a little peace of mind, and yoga was a great way to kick off days full of conversation and self-reflection.

“The power of women brought together to simply love and be… two words: pure magic. Find your girls and love them hard.” – Alexis Jones, founder of two powerful movements: I Am That Girl and Protect Her.

Fall was right on time for this cozy weekend. We snuggled up for daytime workshops focused on identity, positive self-talk, intuition and belief systems.

Meet The Designers Of Our SoHo Pop-Up Mural

Give two #AerieREAL girls a blank wall and a few days, and they’ll make a masterpiece! When we realized our SoHo Pop-Up was in need of a little something extra, two of our graphic designers made it happen. Most days, Nicolette and Brittany work on the beautiful Aerie designs you see in print, but this time we asked them to PAINT! They worked for two days (and nights!) straight to create an amazing, free-hand mural inspired by our Fall 2017 photoshoot.

Read on and find out how they turned their idea into a full-sized mural that shows #AerieREAL in all its beauty. Meet The Designers Of Our SoHo Pop-Up Mural

What was the inspiration behind the mural you designed?

B: The inspiration for our mural was the beautiful landscapes in Kenab, where our Fall photoshoot took place. We took inspiration from the lines, curves, tones and overall diversity of the earth’s landscape that so beautifully, and, in a way, artistically depict some of the different characteristics that make each one of us unique!

You hand painted it from start to finish! Tell us about the process.

N: Brittany and I gathered different photographs from the shoot, all including various landscapes, colors and shapes. We studied these and used them as our inspiration while we hand-drew an outline of what we were envisioning for the mural. We then scanned these onto the computer and began adding in colors inspired by the color palette of the Aerie Fall products along with colors found in nature. We matched these colors to real paint colors and once we drew the outlines on the canvas, used them to fill in all of the white space and began to see the mural come to life!

B: I have to say, this was definitely a first for me! My entire life, I had been artistically inclined and painted and drew as a hobby, however I had never painted anything larger than 18” x 24”, let alone a mural!

Meet The Designers Of Our SoHo Pop-Up MuralMeet The Designers Of Our SoHo Pop-Up Mural

How is #AerieREAL reflected in your designs?

B: We incorporated the characteristics that we found in our shoot that we felt closely resembled some of the different characteristics our bodies have: different curves, different shapes, lines, stretch marks, wrinkles, freckles, tones. We truly believe that these are things that should be embraced; if they are beautiful in art and nature, then they are beautiful on our bodies.

What advice do you have for aspiring graphic designers?

N: Don’t ever hold back your creativity. Always be on the lookout for inspiration. When I visit new places and cities, I soak it all in and let it inspire my work. Design trends are never-ending, so I always make sure to do research any chance I get. It’s amazing how much you can grow as a designer with time and practice.

B: Graphic Design is a rewarding career. You can do what you love, while also communicating a positive message (such as #AerieREAL!). That being said, it can be very competitive and the best advice I could give is to stay #AerieREAL and not compare yourself to fellow graphic designers, in the same way you should never compare your body to someone’s else’s body. There will always be amazing designers. There will always be great ideas you wish you thought of. But that gives you the opportunity to admire, rather than compare. I would also advise I would give is: practice, practice, practice. The more projects that you do, the more you will develop your skills. xoxo.
