What Does #AerieREAL Mean To You?

"Being real is accepting your flaws and all. This is something I have struggled with my whole life. Whether it being my height, hips, thunder thighs, and unruly hair. I've learned over the years that insecurities are not flaws, but strengths. They make you unique and tell a story. My thunder thighs help me kick butt in sports and show the hard work and early morning training I've pushed myself through. My height has made me stretch - literally and figuratively. (Being 5 foot, me and top shelves aren't exactly best of friends.) It gives me enjoyment when I see the perplexed faces of people who underestimate me because of my size. My hips, that don't like, show my heritage and make me proud of where my family came from. My unruly crazy curly hair shows me life is unpredictable and beautiful. It's my trademark no matter how hard I try to change it. I'm better off rocking it and accepting it. No one is perfect, no matter how hard we try to mask it. Our flaws tell a story that we should embrace. It makes us unique. Embrace your flaws. Share your story and be real because imperfections are a beauty to be seen. #AerieREAL" - Amy

SHANNI_18971Show me someone who’s got no baggage, and I’ll show you someone who’s got no story.” This is a line by my favorite musician, George Watsky. I was always a storyteller; in elementary school I would be asked to give shorter answers with less detail. But now is time to tell my story. I am not normal. I never have been. But my differences make me shine. I am an author; when I was in high school I wrote a book about quantum physics with my father while still studying for history tests and stressing over term papers. I am a feminist; I teach my little sisters that they are equal to their male peers and talk to my friends about rape culture. I am a nerd; I hold Doctor Who marathons, have books spread all over my floor, and spend hours playing computer games. I am a fighter; I have spent the past year fighting my eating disorder and spreading awareness about mental illness. I have baggage, stretch marks, scars, stories, and my purple hair. I am a girl, a sister, a daughter, a feminist, a fighter, a nerd, an author, a storyteller. But most importantly, I am real. Aerie Real.” – Shanni

CECILIE_19497

Growing up, my family members would always call me Cindy Crawford because of the birthmark I have on my face. To others, no one really understood why it was there, why it was so big, and would actually give me home remedies to get rid of the mole. I used to dream of getting it removed and would find a way to hide it in public. Once I got to college, everything changed because everyone told me how unique I looked and to embrace what gifts I’ve been given. I love me and my birthmark and we’re not going anywhere! I still get the occasional stares, double takes, and comments, but that doesn’t stop me from keeping it real. I want to show people around the world that it isn’t a bad thing to have an unusual mark on your skin. Everything about you is beautiful and shouldn’t try to hide it like I used to. Embrace it! – Cecilie

julia2JULIA_18326This is Julia, she’s my cousin, my roommate, and my friend. And on top of being all those things she’s talented, driven, and passionate about her dreams. She recently just took a trip through school to Italy for a photography excursion, which is one of her passions that I always find myself in awe after seeing what she creates because they are always so beautiful. I think she knows that she’s good at it because she is so passionate about it. But what I don’t think she ever knows enough is how beautiful she is inside and out, and that is why I am doing this (also because her whole closet is Aerie and I may or may not like to borrow her clothes from time to time. :))  But like I said, Julia is a beautiful girl and I don’t think she quite knows that or embraces that with confidence and that is why I am submitting this little story about her because she would never do it herself. Julia may not find herself to be perfect, but what I see in her is more than what she sees in herself I often think. And that is why I support your #AerieREAL campaign and its aim in promoting natural beauty rather than the unrealistic body images that too many of our girls idealize. Like this photo captures my thrilling Julia’s beauty, free spirit, and zest for life, I think it also has the ability to capture her complete confidence with herself in this moment just as #AerieREAL should do with all women. – Julia was nominated by her cousin, Katelyn

#AskJenny Question of the Week: Backless Doesn’t Have to Mean Braless!

What to wear under your tricky summer tops and dresses this season? This week, you all wanted to know how to stay chic this summer without breaking the bank. Jenny’s back with some expert answers to your biggest summer style SOS!

Jenny's here to turn your bra "oh no's" into "whoa's"!

Q: Which type of bra would you recommend for summery shirts such as flowy, backless, strapless, spaghetti straps, and cross backs? I have a lot of fun shirts and a couple dresses I want to wear (preferably without a tanktop underneath), but my bras always seem to look funky underneath. The bra will almost always show on the sides, the straps might show, or just don’t flow well with the shirt. It’s a pain and makes me consider going bra-less. I don’t want to buy a bra for every shirt because i’m on a college girl’s budget. Please help!

Jenny:  I LOVE this bra question. It really is on everyone’s mind for summer!

You do not need a bra for each outfit, you just need a great do-it-all bra.

First up is a bra I can’t live without, the best investment bra ever; a multi-way bra. Multi way bras are at minimum a great strapless bra, and it’s up to you whether you want padded or not. I like the Mia Multi-Way Pushup bra since it gives great lift and has some oomph in the cups.

I wear it mostly as a strapless, but with a quick change of the straps, you can wear the bra as a halter, one shoulder, deep v-halter, and more! The versatility makes this bra function as 8+ bras in one.

Mia Multi-Way

Have it all with the Mia Multi-Way! While she’s a great strapless option, she can be styled 8 different ways for all your tricky tops.

Second for me is another life changing bra, the Lace Bare Pushup bra. (We also have our original, non-pushup Bare Bra for all you lightly lined ladies!)

bare bra

Our Lace Pushup Bare Bra is one of Jenny’s favorite tricks for getting the backless look…without going braless!

This bra allows you the freedom of going braless (no bra across the back!) while getting the coverage and support of a strapless. The adhesive is amazing (just remember…no deodorant, powder, perfume or lotion where the bra goes or else it won’t stick!). This bra will work with everything, from a backless formal dress to an open back tank top. Take good care of this bra and you’ll go back to it in your drawer forever to solve tons of outfit dilemmas.

With either option, go with nude for the most versatility with your outfits!

That’s it for today! Check out more quick fixes from Jenny here, and look out for more of her answers to your questions each Monday right here on the Aerie blog!

Wedding Season Essentials

The longest day of the year has come and gone, which means that wedding season is in full swing! We don’t know about you, but our calendars are packed with summer weddings, ranging from rustic retreat to city chic. While weddings bring their share of anxieties (the date! the dress!), one thing we won’t be stressing about is what to bring along for the big day. Our essentials will make wedding season no sweat, whether you’re a guest, a bridesmaid, or the bride!

Wedding Season Essentials

Keep these essentials close at hand for any wedding season situation!

Our Pushup Lace Bare Bra is a must-have bra for all your formal attire, and weddings are no exception. The cups provide everyday lift worthy of a very special occasion, and the beige color is perfect under white or sheer dresses. The adhesive wings also add extra security and support. Quick tip: for maximum stick, make sure you’re applying your Bare Bra to clean, dry skin and avoid applying over any powder or deodorant! For more on Bare Bra wear and care, check out our Bare Bra Quick Fix video with our fit and style expert, Jenny Altman.

Broken zipper or slipping straps? Our Apparel Tape is a lifesaver! Plus, for added bonus points, they slip perfectly into even the smallest of clutches! Jenny gives the full lowdown on using Aerie Apparel tape here.

We love Aerie Gel Petals for tops and dresses that require the least amount of coverage. We like to wear them when going braless to eliminate any perky issues and provide a little coverage.

Our Outta-Sight Thong is on heavy rotation in our undie arsenal for bodycon skirts and dresses (ok, and jeans, and shorts, and everything…). Not only are they super comfortable, but their thin, seamless fabrication lies totally flat…goodbye, panty lines!

Outta-Sight Thong

Our Outta-Sight Thong keeps panty lines from ruining your gorgeous wedding look!

Our classic Aerie fragrance is the perfect final touch to any look! We love the rollerball size to quickly pop in our bag for on-the-go spritzing.

Now, you’re all set! Get ready to hit the wedding circuit in style, and party on, Aerie girl!

#AskJenny Questions of the Week: Gapping and Uneven Bust Size

You asked, Jenny answered! Read on to hear Jenny’s quick fixes to some of the biggest bra fit FAQ’s you were asking about this week. Jenny's here to turn your bra "oh no's" into "whoa's"! Q: How do I avoid the dreaded “gap” between the cups and my body when wearing bras and swim?

Jenny: We have all experienced the “gap” when trying on bras and swim tops. Most often it’s due to the wrong choice in bra style, although fit can play a role. Next time you come into your Aerie store, have a fitting to make sure you are wearing your right size (or, if you don’t have a store near you, measure yourself using our handy measuring guide).

Once you know you’re wearing the right size, make sure you try on multiple bra styles to pick the best one for you. There’s no such thing as “standard” size or shaped breasts, which is why there are so many bra types, like demi, balconette and full cup. It’s like shopping for jeans! We aren’t all standard straight leg girls. Take a handful of bra styles into the fitting room with you.Chances are, that if you are getting that gap, that your breasts need some fullness at the bottom. This doesn’t mean you need MAJOR padding (that is a personal choice), but something with a little lift. I recommend styles that are not full coverage, like a demi, with a little push in the bottom of the cups. My picks would be the Harper or the Bridget.

Another option to solve the gap is to go for a bra with stretch at the top of the cup. The Aerie Lace Racerback Bralette or the Aerie Softest Lace Perky Bralette would be perfect. Instead of showing gap, they hug the skin and lay perfectly on most of us!

Gapping and uneven bust issues? Cue Jenny to the rescue with some insider tips!

Gapping and uneven bust issues? Cue Jenny to the rescue with some insider tips!

Q: Do you have any advice for girls with uneven busts (one breast is larger than the other)?

Jenny: The question on EVERY girls mind! So many girls come to me with this question, and I can’t stress enough how totally normal this is. It is also an easy fix.

Go for a bra that best fits the larger/fuller breast. Once that girl is great, then you just need to add push into the smaller cup to even them out.

If the difference in breast size is small, I like bras and swim tops with removable pads for a super easy fix. For bras with removable pads, two of my go-to’s are Emma and Mia, and I love Aerie’s Bandeau and Triangle bikini tops for swim. Just take the pad out of the larger cup and voila! You’re set. You can also try doubling up with the pad you removed to create even more lift in your smaller bust size.

If the difference between the two breasts is fairly large, then go for an easy trick I used as a stylist when dressing celebs (whose boobs were uneven, too!). Get a pair of Aerie Push-Up Lifts (also known as “chicken cutlets”) and place one into the smaller side. Just make sure you lift up your breast and tuck the Push-Up Lift between your breast and the bra so that it gives a natural push and won’t fall out.

Thanks, Jenny! Remember, you can always ask Jenny your fit and style questions by tweeting @Aerie with #AskJenny or by emailing AskJenny@ae.com! We’ll be posting her quick tips for your questions weekly, so be sure to check back on the blog for more!
