Real Talk with Lindsay Avner

We sat down for a quick Q & A with Bright Pink‘s CEO and Founder, Lindsay Avner, a national non-profit organization focused on the prevention and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer in young women.  Read on to learn more about Lindsay’s morning routine, her favorite Aerie Bra (100% of sales go to Bright Pink!) and Bright Pink’s Breast Health Reminder Text Program.

Who or what inspired you to launch Bright Pink?

I have a strong family history of breast and ovarian cancer. 11 women in my family have passed away from these diseases. With this information, I decided to undergo genetic testing to better understand my personal risk. The results showed I tested positive for the BRCA1 gene mutation giving me up to an 87% risk of breast cancer and up to a 54% risk of ovarian cancer. At the time, I was only 23 years old. I didn’t want to wait to get cancer so in 2006, I made history as the youngest woman in the country to opt for a risk reducing double mastectomy. Throughout my journey, I had a hard time finding resources for women like me – healthy women that wanted to take proactive action to live a healthy life. I started Bright Pink to empower women with the resources and information they need to be proactive advocates for their breast and ovarian health at a young age.

Life as a CEO and Founder can be busy we’re sure! What’s an average morning for you like?

All mornings are busy! I usually wake up around 7am and quickly check email on my phone, lying in bed. I get ready pretty quick and out the door within 30 minutes or so. I usually grab some hard boiled eggs and an apple that I eat while I am driving into the city and the best part of my job, is that from the moment I arrive each morning until I leave to catch a workout, I get to collaborate with my awesome team and our partners, and drive the strategy to save more women’s lives..

How do you de-stress?

Exercising – spin classes are my favorite!

Bright Pink created a tool to help you assess your personal level of risk for breast and ovarian cancer, can you tell us more about it?

AssessYourRisk.org is a 19-question quiz comprised of questions about family health history and lifestyle factors that play a role in a person’s baseline level of risk for breast and ovarian cancer. It provides customized results which include where the person lands on the risk spectrum from Average, Increased to High Risk for both breast and ovarian cancer, the factors that are working on her favor or not working in her favor, and most importantly how to take action. My favorite part – you can email the results to your doctor to have a conversation at your next appointment or share with a friend you love to ensure she knows her risk.

If you could debunk one breast cancer myth, what would it be?

Your Dad’s family history of cancer doesn’t affect you. This is so untrue. Your family health history on your dad’s side is just as important as on your mom’s side since we get 50% of our genes from our mom and 50% from our dad. Men can also carry and pass on genetic mutations—like BRCA—that greatly increase breast and ovarian cancer risk. Take the time to gather your family’s health history on both sides – Ask who had cancer, how old were they, and what kind of cancer was detected and use the information to assess your risk for breast and ovarian cancer and speak to your doctor.

Can you tell us about Bright Pink’s Breast Health Reminder Text Program?

DIY: Distressed T-Shirt and Jeans

Every piece of clothing you wear has a story. It holds memories of that awesome concert you went to or that road trip you took. It reminds you of where you’ve been, and all the cool things you’ve done.

Your favorite piece of clothing not only instills a sense of confidence and comfort, it also projects your individuality. When it comes to your style, you should never have to settle, which is why we’re going to show you how to distress your tees and jeans so you can make them as unique as you are.

Click the images below for tutorials on how to create a distressed tee, cutout tee, or distressed jeans.

HOW TO MAKE A DISTRESSED T-SHIRT

Distressed tees have that worn-in, laid-back feel. They’re casual, yet edgy. For an understated look create small holes, or go bold with large gashes and bleach. You can get both looks with items you have lying around the house —  a razor, scissors, sandpaper, a cheese grater, cardboard, and bleach.

Each of the methods are simple. Just make sure to put a piece of cardboard inside the t-shirt of your choice before you start distressing to prevent you from cutting through both sides of the tee!

CHEESE GRATER

The cheese grater is harder to control than other tools, but produces holes with interesting frayed edges. To get this look, hold the fabric taut against the cardboard and grate in all directions. This technique is best if you want a random cluster of holes somewhere on your shirt.

SANDPAPER

The sandpaper is great for the seams and collar. Just rub coarse sandpaper (we used 90 grit) back and forth in all directions where you want your shirt to show a little extra wear.

SCISSORS + PUMICE STONE (OPTIONAL)

Scissors are best for creating large holes. Just snip horizontal lines of varying sizes. For an extra worn look, rub a pumice stone or sandpaper along these cuts.

BLEACH

If you want to make the distressed areas of your tee stand out, use bleach (we used 2 parts water, 1 part bleach) to highlight the holes and cuts in the shirt. You can also use it all over the shirt for a grunge look.

RAZOR

The razor is the tool that gives the most variation, and it is easy to control. The razor you use should be new and sharp. You can drag the razor horizontally to create long slices in the tee similar to the scissors, pull it straight down (holding the fabric taut) for a variety of small holes, or place the fabric on a solid edge (like the corner of a book) for a line of straight holes.

HOW TO CUT A T-SHIRT

It’s easy to get bored of a plain tee. If you want to spice it up, cutouts will do the trick. No sewing needed! We’ve created 7 templates to inspire you to revamp your t-shirts. Just print out the one you like, cut out the template, chalk it on your shirt, and cut out the design.

HOW TO DISTRESS JEANS

There are countless ways to distress jeans—large holes, small holes, frayed seams, the list goes on. Whatever look you want to achieve, there are five basic steps you should follow when distressing your jeans.

  1. Choose a pair of jeans. Denim with less stretch works best if you’d like to create traditional frayed at the knees look, as threads without elastic are less likely to snap.
  2. Try on the jeans and mark where you want to distress them with chalk.
  3. Determine which distressing techniques (razor, cheese grater, sandpaper, tweezers) you’d like to use.
  4. Start distressing. Place cardboard in the pant legs to avoid distressing both sides of the jeans.
  5. Wash on cold and wear.

Like with creating a distressed t-shirt, you should have all the tools you need at home!

RAZOR

The razor is best for cutting larger holes out of the jeans and fraying the denim at the pockets and seams. You can create a hole by placing the jeans against a hard surface and cutting away material with the razor, giving the edges of the hole a naturally frayed look. To distress at the pockets and seams, run the razor along each surface.

CHEESE GRATER

The cheese grater is most difficult to work with, but provides interesting texture. For best results, use the side of the cheese grater with small holes. There are two ways to use a cheese grater. The first is to grate the material in all directions until a small hole begins to form. Continue grating until the hole is a desired size. This will also thin the fabric around the hole, giving it a unique, distressed look. The second way is to make small, parallel cuts with your scissors and grate over this area. This will create a cleaner look, similar to sandpaper.

SANDPAPER

The sandpaper is simple to use and makes it easy to target a specific area on the jeans. Just wrap it around your finger and rub in all directions until a hole starts to form. We used coarse sandpaper (90 grit).

SCISSORS AND TWEEZERS

This is the most common method to distress jeans, especially if you want to fray them at the knees. See detailed instructions below.

1 Flannel, 3 Ways: How To Style Fall’s Essential Shirt

At the first sign of Fall, we’re always reaching for a flannel. The flannel is Fall’s most essential shirt, a style we come back to year after year – it’s a cold weather staple that’s versatile and always on-trend. The great thing about flannels is their ability to shift purpose based on the style you’re going for. They can be the base of your look or act as an accessory to an outfit, just by switching up a few key details. Because of that, you can get tons of wear out of just one flannel. Our head stylist, Laura, pulled together three distinct looks each incorporating the same flannel in a different way to help you up your plaid game this season.

LOOK 1: BUTTONED-UP EDGE
In this outfit, your flannel acts as the base which the look is built on. To give the outfit just the right amount of edge, pair your flannel with eye-catching over-the-knee boots and a black wrap mini skirt. To soften the look, throw a mock neck sweater over your flannel.

STYLE TIPS: leave the collar of the flannel under the neck of the sweater to keep the look clean; push the sleeves of the sweater up so the flannel peeks out; choose a sweater in a neutral color that matches back to one of the shades in your flannel.

LOOK 2: AROUND-THE-WAIST GRUNGE
This 90s-inspired look is one we can’t get enough of. Throw it back to a different era by tying your flannel around your waist. Keep the rest of the look monochrome to make the flannel really pop! Pairing the flannel with hi-rise destructed jeggings, a cropped, tie-front shirt, and buckled ankle booties will take your grunge look to new heights.

STYLE TIPS: make sure the flannel and the top are similarly colored to tie the look together; pair hi-rise jeggings with the flannel around your waist, as the jeans at a spot just a bit higher than where the flannel sits.

LOOK 3: TOP LAYER COOL
In this look, we’re using the flannel as a top layer and accent piece. Here, we’re throwing the flannel over a slip dress and white tee, and adding a surprise element to the look by mixing prints in the dress and flannel. Plus, this little trick will make it look like your look took hours to plan! Finish the outfit off with tan ankle booties for an effortless feel.

STYLE TIP: Be sure your mixed prints share at least one similar color but ideally two or more; keep the tee under your slip dress a neutral white so the look isn’t overwhelming.
