Holiday Survival Tips

The Holiday season is upon us, and with it comes fun memories and traditions. The downside? The season also comes with a less welcome side of stress, between wrapping a million gifts, long lines and listening to your Great Uncle Jeff tell that story (again).

A quick checklist of the essentials is key to getting through the craziness that comes with the season. We asked Aerie’s fit and style expert, Jenny Altman, for some of her Holiday survival tips and must-have Aerie items. Read on for Jenny’s tips below!

Jennys Holiday Survival Tips

Everything you need to survive the holidays starts at Aerie!

Jenny’s Essentials:

1. The Romantic Lace Bralette: The soft structure shows off your most natural shape. Just enough support with tons of comfort!

2. The Pushup Bare Bra: This is the best bra investment you can make! It will get you through every holiday event.

3. Outta-Sight Undie: Good undies are also important and panty lines are not allowed! This is a no-fuss option under any dress.

4. Moccasins: I can never have enough slippers around the holidays, and these are my favorite on the site right now.

5. The Aerie Blanket Scarf: I bought 4 of these blanket scarves for friends as gifts! You cannot go wrong!

6. Aerie Waffle Sleep Set: Mix & match pajamas are a favorite of mine for winter.

7. Aerie Flannel Pajama Pant: I love flannel bottoms with a drawstring. I love the ones with the shopping bear!

Jenny’s Holiday Survival Tips:

1. I like to glam up my holiday look with some jewelry, and this is where I make a little investment! I go for classic, personal pieces that make you feel special,

2. I love with the house smells delicious. If I’m not baking anything (which I’m probably not), then a yummy candle is the thing. I love fig scents, but pine smells really woodsy…a smell I appreciate living in the city!

3. A great pair of shoes that can carry you through all your holiday events is a must! For me, it’s a functional bootie in winter, with a touch of glam.

4. A live Christmas tree is a must for me. There is nothing that smells better and makes you live the holiday moment more than the scent of real pine. This smell reminds me that I’m home every time I walk through the door.

5. I love to eat…and there is no time I enjoy it more! My mother-in-law inspired me to make some amazing soups. I’m a vegetarian, so this Avocado Soup is my favorite (you sprinkle popcorn on it!).

Super-Easy Avocado Soup

Ingredients:

4-5 ripe avocados

Broth (I use vegetable, but feel free to use chicken broth)

A squeeze of lemon to taste

Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions:

Blend all ingredients together, then serve at room temperature with a handful of popcorn sprinkled on top. Then eat the rest of the popcorn, of course!

6. Finally, the key to getting me through the holiday season (especially a cold, New York City one) is a trip planned with my family for January! When I know there is something warm in my future, it gives me something special to look forward to.

Thanks for the tips, Jenny! We hope you have a fun-filled holiday season, Aerie girls!

Xoxo,

Aerie

AEOSTYLE CHALLENGE: QUILTED VEST

It’s our mission to make sure you look cool while keeping warm this winter. How you might ask? Well, our Quilted Vest is a great place to start. With its diamond-quilted fabric and mock neck collar, your winter blues will be a thing of the past.

We asked bloggers McArthur from Daily Mister and Chimed from NxStyle to show us how they style this cold weather must-have.

Meet McArthur:
McArthur (mostly known as Mac) is a millennial menswear blogger based out of New York. His blog, Daily Mister, was created for guys everywhere to get a dose of style and obscure pop culture references.

What Inspired McArthur’s Look:
When it comes to my personal style I love to blur the lines between dandyism and streetwear. While I easily could’ve gone in a traditional route and paired the vest with a sweater I decided to dress it up with this cotton blazer from American Eagle. One of my favorite things to do is style garments in completely different ways and I can’t wait to see how I’ll be wearing this essential piece will fit in my wardrobe throughout the season.

Meet Chimed:
NxStyle is a fashion blog run by a couple who loves fashion as much as they love pizza where we inspire others through our illustrious fashion posts. Through social media we are regarded as an upcoming fashion power couple on a mission to help people find their fashion ground.

What Inspired Chimed’s Outfit:
The main inspiration of the outfit was the fall and spring time weather where it is too hot to wear full on jackets but its too chilly to go with just shirt and tie. Adding a puffer vest to your everyday outfit not only gives you an extra style points but it immediately puts you in the category of those in the GQ magazine. This is a perfect way to help you stand out in the grey crowd of chilly weather in a stylish and work appropriate way.

Follow Her Friday: Anna Martemucci

On Fridays, we like to do a special shout-out to #AerieREAL girls who seriously inspire. This Follow Her Friday, we’d like you to meet Anna Martemucci, who comes to us by way of Los Angeles/Brooklyn.  Between writing, directing, acting, producing, and founding Periods Films, Anna took some time to chat with us. Read more below!

images

Multitasking at its best! Here, she’s on set in a moving car with her team, filming on location in Pittsburgh.

Aerie: Hi, Anna! Thanks for taking the time to talk with us today. Tell us your story in a nutshell!

Anna: I grew up in small towns in North Dakota and Pennsylvania but my parents emigrated here from Rome, Italy and Prague, Czech Republic. I became first a writer and then a filmmaker. I love telling stories that promote the notions of human equality and compassion. I also want to make people laugh and feel connected to the world. And I really enjoy hot tubs.

Aerie: What does #AerieREAL mean to you?

Anna: When I saw the Aerie Real campaign, to me it meant that [Aerie] was taking a step towards a better world! All through growing up, every woman I knew, no matter what she looked like, was obsessed with losing weight and striving to look perfect, including me. Often times this obsession was so huge it would be at the detriment of our physical and mental health.  I think a lot of that is because we’re sort of brainwashed by the constant images of airbrushed faux perfection we have flying at our faces constantly, and the fact that most of our movies and TV shows are populated largely with women who have very similar body types to each other.  I love the no airbrushing idea. If we can all admit that every single human being is a flawed little snowflake of gorgeous imperfection, and that imperfection can be just as beautiful (if not more so!) than our current, narrow idea of “perfection,” then maybe we’ll all feel more free! There are so many more interesting things to think about than losing weight or looking perfect, after all.

Anna and Zachary Quinto, 0495

Aerie: What makes YOU #AerieREAL?

Anna: I really love what I do.

Aerie: Where do you see yourself in 3 years?

Making movies or a cinematic TV show, hopefully somehow involving puppets. Kidding about the puppets…kind of.  I hope I’m telling stories in some form. Maybe raising a small baby into a grown human. Feeding self properly. Traveling and living and loving, baby.*  (*said in a drawl like Matthew McConaughey).

Aerie: What’s your favorite inspirational quote?

Anna: There are so many! But I love this one, it is so good for the creative types (which I suspect every human being is in some form):

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. … No artist is pleased. [There is] no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others.”  –  Martha Graham

Aerie: What’s your biggest accomplishment thus far?

Anna: [My films] Breakup at a Wedding, Hollidaysburgh, and Periods.  These are the 3 movies I’ve made with my team at Periods Films, which includes my brother-in-law Philip Quinaz and husband Victor Quinaz. My biggest personal accomplishment has been learning how to be a team player after years of being an isolated writer. Other people are where it’s at.

Say…cheese? Anna strikes a pose with Periods Films actor Brian Shoaf before shooting the Periods Film “FOPS”.

Aerie: Do you have a role model? If so, who is he or she, and why does he or she inspire you?

Anna: I have so many role models. I find life so much better and all of my big dreams more manageable when I focus on the people and artists that I love. So the concept of role models is big for me!  The Coen Brothers, John Hughes, Sophia Coppola, Paul Thomas Anderson, Richard Linklater, Lena Dunham, Wes Anderson, Louis C.K., Alexander Payne, Jill Soloway…they are all storytelling heroes of mine, among many others. I love the way that each of these storytellers has a very particular voice, one that can really only be theirs, and through the specificity of their voice, something universal is achieved. That’s what I strive for in my own work.

Aerie: What’s your favorite Aerie item?

Anna: This blanket scarf is super cute and I want it.

IMG_7460

Lights, camera…action! Some of the Periods Films crew get together on location for “Nam.”

Aerie: What are your three things you always have with you?

Anna: Shoes that look good but that I can walk in for at least 20 NYC city blocks, blotting papers (curse of the shiny face), a positive outlook.

Aerie: If you could pick any actress or actor to play you in your own movie, who would it be?

Anna: Amy Sedaris.

IMG_7886

Making doing it all look easy! Here’s Anna on the set of “Medal of Victory” in Wisconsin.

Aerie: Do you have a secret talent, skill or quirk? Do tell!

Anna: Badminton. The tiny rackets make me feel powerful and I just love saying “shuttlecock” as much as possible in this short life.

Thanks for chatting with us, Anna! To keep up with Anna, follower her on Instagram and Twitter   @AnnaMartemucci!

Xoxo,

Aerie
