Zen On: 4 Yoga Poses To Master This Summer

During the summer, it feels like plans are never ending and a new invite pops up on your calendar every day! Although we usually think of summer as a season of relaxation, these months can get pretty busy – sometimes to the point where you actually have to set aside time for yourself. We love a good Netflix binge as much as the next person, but we’ve also discovered that there are more productive options if you need to de-stress… and, surprise!, you won’t end up feeling like a couch potato after. One of our favorite ways to unwind is by getting active, whether that means taking a walk outside, lifting weights in the gym or hitting the mat for some yoga. Active movement helps to clear your mind and strengthen your body. Plus, it’s a great way to show off your athleisure #AEOSTYLE! Today, we’re grabbing our yoga mats and breaking down four yoga poses to master this summer.

CRESCENT LUNGE (Anjaneyasana):
Alignment Tips: Make sure you’re on the ball of your back foot and that your hips are square. Sometimes it helps to put your hands on your hips and psychically align them so that they’re facing the front wall. Keep your back heel firm on the floor and the back leg strong as if you were trying to touch the back of your knee to the ceiling. To your own degree, bend your front knee as close to 90 degrees as possible. Reach your arms overheard and breath deep.

Benefits: Stretches hip flexors & legs; strengthens thighs and glutes; opens chest; improves balance

DANCER (Natarajasana):
Alignment Tips: Keep a slight bend in your standing leg & shift weight on to this leg. Bend your back leg up to your degree slowly, simultaneously catching your foot or ankle with one or both hands if possible. You can reach one arm in front to help your balance. Keep your neck long and head high.

Benefits: Improves balance; strengthens legs and core; stretches shoulders and chest

ONE LEGGED KING PIGEON (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana):
Alignment Tips: Keep your shin on the ground parallel to your mat to protect the knee. Slightly angle your back hip and from a straight leg, bend the back leg up. Catch the ankle or foot with one or both hands, or rest it in your arm as seen below. If you cannot reach back or bend the leg up, that’s fine! support yourself upright using both arms in front.

Benefits: Stretches thighs, chest and shoulders; stimulates abdomen & internal organs

ONE LEGGED KING PIGEON II (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana II):
Alignment Tips: Start with shins on the floor and core reaching high. Slowly backbend to your degree and catch one leg within your arm as your raise it. Reach the other arm toward the ceiling and breathe. If you need back support, bring your lower hand to your lower back and breathe.

Benefits: Stretches torso and deep hip flexors; improves posture; strengthens back; stimulates abdominal organs

Make Your Own French Fry Bar

Erin from The Almond Eater is back with her third recipe post to help us count down the days until summer (we’re in the single digits now!). If you missed her first two posts, Caprese Kebabs and Chocolate Dipped Coconut Popsicles, be sure to check them out! Keep reading for her make-your-own french fry bar tips below.

A French Fry Bar is what dreams are made of! Homemade baked french fries sprinkled with salt and served with several different choices of condiments… talk about a tasty appetizer your friends can get behind!

Whenever someone asks “would you like fries with that?” there is only one appropriate answer: YES. How does one even go about ordering a sandwich without fries? How?! In fact, sometimes I just order fries. I know they’re considered a side, but sometimes they deserve to be the star of the show.

Like today.

Amp up your next get-together with a make your own French fry bar!

Though it may be more common to create a cheese plate or fruit platter when you have guests over, I guarantee they’d be much more thrilled to hang out with you if they knew there were going to be FRIES. Not that you’re not fun to hang out with, but c’mon. It’s a french fry bar for goodness sake! Fries on fries on fries with so many different condiments. You could even take it up a notch and add sweet potato fries into the mix.

I may be a bit biased, but a french fry bar is WAY better than a fruit platter, and I love fruit! Seriously, I do. But you cannot say “no” to fries.

I decided to use the following condiments in this spread: ketchup, mustard, truffle oil with parmesan cheese, garlic herb olive oil, chipotle mayo, and nacho cheese. Obviously you can include whatever you like – that’s the beauty of it! While I don’t like to play favorites, my favorite french fry condiments are probably truffle oil and chipotle mayo. In case you aren’t aware, chipotle mayo is simply mayo with a bit of sriracha. Yes, you can technically go to the store and buy “chipotle mayo,” but there’s really no need.

Amp up your next get-together with a make your own French fry bar!

Oh, and if you’ve never made your own fries, what are you waiting for? Truthfully, I should make them more often than I do. I like chopped, roasted potatoes anyway, so why not spend a few extra minutes chopping them up even smaller into french fry-sized potatoes. Because for some reason, fries>potatoes.

So cheers to summertime and friends and all the condiments. Oh yeah, and to fries! DUH.

Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 3-4 russet potatoes, washed and scrubbed
  • 3-4 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt
  • Condiments of choice (ketchup, mustard, truffle oil, mayo, etc.)

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 450°.
  2. Chop potatoes into thin slices; typically, the thinner they are, the crispier they’ll become.
  3. Line two baking sheets with foil and then spray nonstick spray overtop.
  4. Place potatoes into a large bowl and drizzle olive oil and salt overtop; stir to coat.
  5. Place fries only baking sheet, making sure they are evenly spread out and not overlapping one another.
  6. Bake fries for 25-30 minutes, flipping over halfway through so that they bake evenly.
  7. Remove from oven, sprinkle with more salt and serve with several choices of condiments.

Your Guide To Finding The Perfect Pair Of Shorts

Summer is synonymous with shorts season. This year, we have tons of shorts fits in different lengths & fabrics, and we’re here to clear up any confusion about AEO shorts with this guide. Our guy’s shorts are now available in Flex fabric, which are perfect for summer wear because they move with you, making them even more comfortable for summer activities – day or night. To find your perfect fit, check out the differences between our newest shorts styles plus our outfitting tips below.

Flat Fronts Only
Flex Flat Front Shorts are the fit of the summer, and you’ll find that even if you’re rocking cargo shorts, they’ll have a flat front style. AEO flat front shorts come in various cuts and lengths, including Slim Flat Front Shorts and Classic Flat Front Shorts. These Flex fits will be your go-to summer short: they’re versatile & pair well with everything from tees to button downs. Since they’re available in Flex fabric, you can literally wear them anywhere… even to sleep! We especially like to match Flex shorts back to a graphic tee and sneakers.

Clubmax Sunglasses | Lace-Up Sneaker

Length Matters
How tall you are can directly influence the cut and length of your shorts. If you’re on the taller side, get adventurous and try out a shorter inseam. The 9-inch inseam of the Slim Front Flat Shorts or a 10-inch inseam of Classic Flat Front Shorts will suit your height well. A standard short or longer length short with either a perfectly straight leg or cargo pocket details work well for most guys, so you might consider trying those first! Still lost? The easiest way to find your best fit is to the head to the fitting room. Try on several different styles, and you’ll know after a couple of tries exactly which short fit is meant for you.

Rock A Print
The biggest guys’ trend of Summer 2016 is printed shorts. If you haven’t given much thought to how you feel about prints, now is the time to test them out. Vivid prints make a bold #AEOSTYLE statement, and AEO Flex shorts come in tons of prints and patterns, so you can easily experiment with your look. Whether you’re feeling a paradise print, are drawn to polka dots or are more of a stripes guy, our best advice is to go for it. Be adventurous and pair your printed or solid shorts with a graphic tee and sandals for a look that will carry you through the season.

Dress for the Day
Different occasions call for different shorts – for example, you’d probably want to wear different shorts to the movies than you would for a volleyball game. For active days, AEO Jogger Shorts and Hybrid Shorts in lightweight microfibers with a lot of stretch allow you more movement and freedom. A bright graphic tee will move with you through any activity, and Birkenstock sandals are great for beach days. For those weekend festivals and chill nights with friends, Denim Shorts are comfy and cool. Pair Cutoff Denim Shorts with a printed tee or a button down shirt, and add a few braided bracelets for a subtle accessory.
