#MUSIC MONDAY: Xeno and Oaklander

Over the last few months the talented duo, Xeno and Oaklander helped bring our holiday videos come to life. Their upbeat and energetic sound heightened the emotion that was not only tied to telling the story of our American Eagle Outfitters holiday campaign, but glamorized the seasonal product as well. We sat down with the newly wed duo (they just got back from their honeymoon!) to learn about their sound, how they met and their super cute pup, Roland. Take a look below.

Sean & Liz: Xeno and Oaklander

AEO: Hey  guys, thanks for checking in. Please introduce yourself.
Xeno & Oaklander (X&O): We’re Xeno & Oaklander – we’re a synth duo. I’m Liz and my synth partner is Sean, we’re in a band together. It’s minimal electronic music. We’re based in Brooklyn and we have a pup called Roland: it’s a funny name, – he’s named after a famous brand of synthesizers and drum machines from Japan. I’m sure you know the 808 drum machine. American bands like Afrika Bambaataa, Talking Heads and Egyptian Lover used it. More obscure European bands such as Front 242 and Twilight Ritual used it as well. Roland is our favorite brand of synthesizers, and we own so many of them in our music studio that we thought ‘let’s call our dog Roland’

AEO: You guys are a minimal electronics duo. What or who inspired you to get into this kind of music?
X&O: We love collecting – we collect synthesizers and vinyl records. We have a big collection of vinyl records and it is by collecting minimal electronic music that we decided we wanted to make this kind of music. The first attraction often when buying an album is the record cover: minimal and sexy. We have been collecting music by electronic bands from today, mostly on independent labels in the US, and from rare bands from the 80s, mostly from Europe. Listening to this kind of music is like discovering something rare. It’s a chilling sensation.

AEO: Out of all the places you’ve performed, what city/country was your favorite concert and why?
X&O: Paris was our favorite concert on our Par Avion European Tour this fall. Maybe because they speak French? A lot of our lyrics are in French, because I come from there. Our new album has a French title, Par Avion, that means ‘Air Mail’, quite romantic. I love letters and postcards.

AEO: How did you two become a duo?
X&O: I was DJing at a friend’s loft in Brooklyn, and Sean liked the records I was spinning. It was rare minimal electronic music. We started a band straight away and we haven’t stopped since. It’s an addiction.

AEO: What are some of the funniest experiences you’ve had while being in a band?
X&O: Our funniest and funnest experience has been getting our dog Roland!

AEO: We recently found out you have an adorable 16 pound Cockapoo, Roland. Naturally when we found this out, we had to send you an ABO Puffer Vest. Tell us more about Roland.
X&O: Roland our dog has a thing for fashion… a certain form of vanity! He loves to be styled. His nickname is ‘Designer Dog’.

AEO: Do his lady dog friends like his new style?
X&O: Roland our pup has two lady dog friends – and they are Beagles! Kikki and Poppy. I think they wish they also had a puffer vest. Both beagles live in Connecticut, and it is snowing there right now. Roland is their cool boyfriend from Brooklyn.

AEO: Tell us about any upcoming tours/releases that you have.
X&O: We’ve just released a new album on Ghostly called ‘Par Avion‘ – and we’ve just been on a tour of the US and Europe. We’ve got our eyes on Japan for our next tour. It’s a dream of ours!

We have the best destroyed denim to break into a new year. Each pair has been carefully deconstructed and reconstructed to give you the perfect broken in look. With 23 fits and 117 washes, we know you’ll find the perfect style to help create memories that last.

What Inspired Sara’s Look:
Now I don’t know about you, but I tend to wear the same pair of denim until they absolutely fall apart because I dread going “jean’s shopping.” While my stature is petite, I have muscular thighs and calves. I am learning to appreciate my curves, but have a tough time finding jeans with the best balance of stretch, comfort and fit. Recently, I’ve discovered and fallen in love with American Eagle’s denim, especially their jeggings. They are available in different waistlines, washes, and lengths while maintaining the most wearable stretch and control. Ah, I can’t rave about them enough. I’ve collected a few of the different denim shades and explored their high-waisted options.

The lighter wash is extremely versatile and I adore the distressed accents to add some edge to your look. They are great for a casual day shopping, stylish for a lunch date with your gal pals, yet relaxed enough to wear for a road trip. Jeans are a necessity for these winter months ahead and look amazing paired with boots and a shaggy knit jacket!

How To Make A Fishtail Braid

We love “double tapping” beautiful hair looks on Insta but when it comes to our own DIY moment…we’re lost! One of our favorite hair styles we have been loving this season is the gorgeous, but very intimidating fishtail braid. We asked our studio hair stylist, Julie M., if she could show us step-by-step instructions to teach us this hot new ‘do. Follow her tips below to learn how to style the fishtail braid like a pro in no time!

Before you begin: gently brush out any tangles in hair but leave as much of your natural texture as possible. For a little extra lift, use a dry shampoo at the roots and crown of head.

Step 1: Gather hair into desired side ponytail and secure it with a small elastic band.

Step 2: Separate the ponytail into two equal strands.

Step 3: Starting with either the left or right section, take a small strand of hair from one of the outer edges.

Step 4: Pass this strand to the opposite section of hair.  Once you’ve added this strand to the other section, forget about it. You will always just be working with two sections, not three.

Step 5: Now take a second strand of hair from the opposite side [always concentrating on just taking from the outer edge] and add it to the other section like above.

Step 6-9: Keep repeating this process from side to side – taking pieces from outer edge, one side to the next until you reach the end.  As you work down the braid you can also take smaller sections if desired.

Step 10: Once you are done, secure the bottom of braid with a second clear elastic.

Step 11: Carefully cut out the first elastic on the top that you used at the top.

Step 12: This braid looks best messy! Once you’ve finished, mess it up a little by carefully pulling apart the braid, to create a less structured look. You can even take a teasing comb around the edges to mess up the edges.

7 things we love to bring in 2015

20141229_7_THINGS

 { Image Source: 1. | 2. | 3. | 4. | 5. | 6. | 7. | 7. | }

Happy new year! Our 2015 is off to an awesome start and we hope yours is, too. These are some of our favorite things to kick off the year. How are you heading into 2015?

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING: INTO THE WOODS
Whether or not you know or have ever seen the show, this movie is a must see. The all-star cast (led by Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt, Chris Pine and Meryl Streep) take you through some of the most well-known fairytales (including Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Cinderella)… but, as you’ll soon find out, everything is not as it seems. As Cinderella’s Prince, Pine’s rendition of Agony (sung with Rapunzel’s Prince, Billy Magnussen) is especially hilarious.

WHAT WE’RE LISTENING TO: BORNS
We can’t get enough as of late with this Michigan born and bred (but now LA dwelling) singer, whose blend of folk, glam and electro rock makes us feel like we’re living inside a dream. (In the best way possible, of course.) Make sure to download his EP, Candy.

WHAT WE’RE READING: BLOGLOVIN’
Need a way to keep all your blogs under one online roof? Bloglovin’ is SO the way to go. This blog reader organizes every post into a feed that you can scroll through all together or break up by individual blog, making it super easy to read all your favorite sites at a glance. (Plus it’s such an easy way to follow both this blog and our Tumblr, meaning you’ll never miss out on anything happening right here at AEO.)

WHERE WE’RE GOING: LOS ANGELES
The City of Angels is calling our name right now (probably because as we type this it’s only 17 degrees outside at our Pittsburgh home office headquarters). But in all fairness, L.A. has tons of awesome stuff to do and see. Catch a game or a concert at the Staples Center, go shopping on Abbot Kinney in Venice, stroll along the pier in Santa Monica, catch the waves in Malibu, be super touristy and go to Graumann’s Chinese Theater and the Hollywood Walk of Fame… there’s something for everyone (and tons of neighborhoods to explore).

WHAT WE’RE DOWNLOADING: HYPERLAPSE
In a word? O-B-S-E-S-S-E-D. Turn all of your videos into a work of art with this app, which make it so easy to create time lapse videos (and to upload them to Instagram). Truth be told, we’re pretty much spending all our free time making them.

WHAT WE’RE EATING/DRINKING: DETOX SMOOTHIES
Whether your NYE was full of debauchery or you just hit the cookies a little too hard over the holidays, there’s no time like the present to do a little detoxing. And what better (and more delicious) way to do that than with a detox smoothie? We’re especially loving the idea of a blueberry and avocado smoothie. Just blend it with a banana, cucumber, spinach and coconut water and voila: instant refreshment (and good for your body antioxidants to boot).

WHAT WE’RE WEARING: DESTROYED JEANS
Really want to break into 2015? You need a new pair of destroyed jeans. Ripped, repaired, mended, stitched, faded, distressed, patched… the more destroyed your jeans are this year, the better.
