We teamed up with blogger Erin Grey from Style By The People to get her styling tips for a piece as iconic as the denim skirt. With professional experiences as a stylist and marketer, Erin decided to take a leap and go public with her fashion musings. Style by the People began as a passion project to share her ever-evolving personal style and adventures, hoping to inspire others and invite them to join her journey, celebrating life, one outfit at a time”

What Inspired Erin’s Look:
“I am known for being a bit denim obsessed, so any opportunity to wear denim – whether it be jeans, cut off shorts, or a denim skirt – I will take! I am all for taking trendy pieces and making them feel right to me — so with the weather warming up and festival season around the corner, I wanted to figure out a way to be able to wear a denim skirt again. Combining this vintage cut-off denim skirt with a kelly green sweatshirt felt like the perfect update to this 90’s trend, and my modern take on the classic cut off skirt.”

#WeAllCan X Project 24

One  in  every  10  people  globally  lack  access  to  clean  water,  with 1 in 4 using  a  drinking  water  source  with  fecal contamination. It’s time we  change  this!  This  World  Water  Day,  March  22,  American Eagle Outfitters is  joining  forces with  Planet  Water  Foundation for PROJECT  24.

PROJECT  24’s  mission is to  build  24  water  filtration  systems  in  24  hours,  bringing  clean  water  to  24,000  people across 5  countries including  Cambodia,  Colombia,  India,  Indonesia,  and  the  Philippines.  American Eagle Outfitters has sponsored  one  of  the  24  clean water  towers  that  are  part  of  this  initiative  providing  critical  support  to  a community  in  need  in  Greater Delhi, India.

American Eagle Outfitters is  honored  to  step  up  to  the  challenge  and  play  an  important  role  in  helping  change the  lives  of  24,000 people  in  a  span  of  just  24  hours. Join  us  and  together  we  will  abolish  water  poverty,  one  community  at  a time!

In efforts to help bring clean water to communities, we are donating 15,000 dollars to build a water tower at Sangat Green Public School in Deri Machha Village. Ajay, a Grade 6 student at the school said, “I carry my drinking water from home as school water is dirty, and it smells bad. I feel sick for days after drinking water at school.”

American Eagle Outfitters is proud to help bring clean, filtered water to thousands of people in Deri Machha.  You can help provide clean water to even more kids in need by visiting www.planet-water.org.

Happy World Water Day!

STYLED 4 WAYS: THE ATHLETIC AESTHETIC

Don’t call it a comeback trend: “athleisure” is here to stay.

The last few years have seen a slow-but-steady blurring of the line that separates activewear from streetwear, to the point that the two are now nearly indistinguishable. Menswear as a whole has treaded into more casual, sporty territory, while activewear continues to adopt an increasingly streamlined, minimalist, wear-it-anywhere aesthetic.

And here’s where it becomes clear that this shift is more than a passing trend: with it, we’ve ALSO seen a general shift in public perception. No longer is it considered “lazy” or “sloppy” to wear your workout clothes outside the gym, and now more than ever, it’s seen as totally acceptable to mix activewear into to your everyday wardrobe — in some cases, even your work wardrobe.

The bottom line: everyone likes to be comfortable and everyone likes to look good. So when the stars align to make those two things happen simultaneously, repeat after us: YOU. TAKE. ADVANTAGE.

How, exactly? That’s where Laura, our Lead Stylist, comes in. Below, she shows us four easy-to-replicate ways to incorporate activewear into your everyday looks — WITHOUT sacrificing your style.

LOOK #1: MINIMAL + MODERN

Go for a cool, tonal look with head-to-toe black and grey hues. Laura’s picks: these space-dyed grey shorts, a simple black hoodie (the grey trim is a small detail that does a lot to tie the whole look together) and black sneakers with a bright-white contrast sole.

At a glance, this look could pass as high-end streetwear (closer inspection reveals essential performance attributes like reflective trim, thumb holes and bonded zippers).

LOOK #2: STYLE MEETS COMFORT

Believe it or not, this outfit features the same grey shorts from the first look!

Styled with a classic chambray shirt, an olive-green varsity jacket and simple white slip-ons, they take on a whole new vibe — casual-cool yet totally pulled together.

Shop the Look:

AEO Reversible Embroidered Bomber Jacket | AEO Indigo Chambray Shirt | Reebok Club C 85 Sneaker

LOOK #3: RETRO SPORT

For our third look, Laura created a sporty, ‘90s-inspired feel by pairing slim-fitting joggers with light layers and a modern graphic hoodie.

Added bonus: the tapered leg and varsity-striped trim make these joggers the perfect modern-day replacement for those old, baggy track pants (but they’re just as comfortable!).

Shop the Look:

AE Active Hoodie | AEO Longline Crew T-Shirt | AE Active Side Stripe Jogger

LOOK #4: WEEKEND VIBES

Our final look is proof that a few minor tweaks can completely transform your aesthetic.

Laura took the layered tees and joggers from our third look and gave them a sport-to-street makeover by swapping the hoodie for a timeless denim jacket, adding crisp white sneakers and topping it off with a fresh baseball cap.

The result? A laid-back, put-together look that you could wear literally anywhere. (Well, okay, maybe not to that black-tie wedding. You get the drift.)

How To Style The Cutoff Denim Short With Justin Davids

Just as we were about to pack away our snow gear, winter came back with a vengeance. Even though Snowmageddon 2017 is imminent, you can still think spring (or, if you’re lucky enough to live on the west coast, you can actually break out your warm weather look now)! Denim cutoff shorts are going to be a big trend this year – you’ll be seeing them everywhere from summer music festivals to the beach. Menswear Instagrammer Justin Davids styled our super versatile AEO Denim Cutoff Short with a laid-back, easy vibe. See Justin’s full look below and let us know what spring trends you’re excited to wear in the comments.

Meet Justin:
“I recently switched coasts, moving from Los Angeles to New York City. My girlfriend and I create daily vlogs chronicling life in The Big Apple. I teamed up with her to also create DIY room decor for teens. One reason I was so drawn to the city was because the fashion here is very adventurous. I’ve been loving the high fashion vibes just as much as the street style. When it comes to my style I’d say that I’m sort of  a chameleon. I change up my look depending where I’m going and what I’m doing.”

What Inspired Justin’s Look:
“These ripped denim shorts are a new spring staple for me because they can be styled a million different ways. Shorts are a tough beast to tame, some are too short or run a bit too tight, but these are comfy, and they hit that sweet spot just above the knee. Heading into spring I tend to reach for styles that are crisp and clean, so I paired these ripped shorts with a classic striped tee for a classic vibe, which fits with my laid back style day to day. Being that it’s still a bit chilly here in the city, I decided to throw on a lightweight neutral colored spring trench for layers done just right.”

#AEOFESTIVALSTYLE: 2017 Music Festival Packing Guide

Pack light, pack right. As we’re heading into the 2017 music festival season, we’re on a mission to be super efficient packers without sacrificing any #AEOFestivalStyle. One thing we like about packing light is that challenges us to make several outfits using just a few essential staples and some great fashion pieces and accessories. First, think about how many days you’re going to be at the festival (three is pretty typical!). You’ll need to bring enough clothes to create three awesome looks, but have no fear – by swapping out key items like tops, you can mix and match your festival style without being an outfit repeater. Check out our packing guide for girls and guys below, and let us know what festivals you’re heading to this spring and summer in the comments!

WHAT TO PACK THIS FESTIVAL SEASON

GIRLS: All vintage, all day. This festival season, focus on vintage details in tops, denim and accessories like old-school lettering and lace-up or tied details. Mini backpacks, bandanas and round sunglasses are a must, especially when you’re pairing them back to vintage, two-toned denim shorts. Here’s what you need to pack: one pair of shorts and effortlessly pair back to tanks in neutral colors (we chose dark grey and one of our fave new neutrals, blush). If you want to switch it up one day, bring a lightweight slip dress and a kimono to layer on top. Bonus: you can layer the kimono over the tanks, too. Finish your look with a pair of versatile buckled ankle booties!

Music Festival Season 2017 Packing Guide: What To Wear To Music Festivals

PACK IT
TOPS:
Crop Tie Tank | Raglan Lace-Up T-Shirt | Hi-Neck Lace Trim Cami | Paisley Kimono
BOTTOMS:
Tassel Slip Dress | Vintage Hi-Rise Festival Short
ACCESSORIES: Printed Bandana | Perforated Belt | Blue Lens Small Aviator Sunglasses
Metal Round Sunglasses | Dolce Vita Spur Booties | Street Level Mini Backpack

GUYS: Guys, when you’re packing take a note from Drake and start from the bottom. What base layers do you really need? Our essentials are shoes, underwear and a great pair of denim shorts. We chose a pair of shorts that will last you throughout the festival (but we wouldn’t discourage you from packing one more pair, just in case!). Festivals can get a little sweaty, so make sure you have enough tees to wear each day. Vintage band tees, baseball tees and tie-dye tees will keep you festival ready. If there’s any time to get a little wild with your #AEOSTYLE, it’s during festival season – so go ahead and pack that printed poncho! It can double as rain gear, anyway. Top off your look with a snapback and beaded bracelets.
