Movie We Love: The Fault in Our Stars

Back in April, the bestselling book, The Fault in Our Stars was one of the 7 things we loved… and we were anxiously awaiting the premiere of the movie. The tearjerker about teen cancer sufferers Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters was released on June 6 and, suffice it to say, we were definitely not disappointed. Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort were utterly adorable and inspirational on screen, and we have to admit, brought tears to our eyes more than once. Above all, we were inspired by the message of positivity and living every day to the fullest.

We also loved Gus and Hazel’s laidback style throughout the film. We’ve pulled together some of our favorite AEO pieces to help you recreate their looks.

Another reason we love this film is because it was shot in our very own hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. If you’re ever in Pittsburgh, here are the must-stop locations where some of the scenes were filmed.

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Mt. Lebanon: This is where they filmed the support group scenes and where Hazel and Gus first meet.

Oakmont: While we don’t know exactly where the crew filmed in Oakmont, this was the location of Hazel’s house. Take a drive towards the iconic Oakmont Country Club and you’re likely to see some familiar surroundings from the movie.

Allegheny General Hospital Suburban Campus: All of the hospital scenes were shot here.

7 things we love…

We’re back with another 7 Things We Love! Here are all the things inspiring us right this second, from what we’re eating and watching to what we’re wearing and downloading. Let us know what you think about our picks in the comments—and give us yours, too!

When playing live, New England native Merrill Garbus can create drum loops on the spot and layer them with ukulele, vocals and electric bass. The first single off her 3rd album, Nikki Nack, “Water Fountain” is an awesome mix of eclectic, upbeat and world music inspiration. This is definitely the kind of song that will be stuck in your head for days on end (in a good way, of course).

Avery Monson is kind of a genius with this new Vine, which features everything from “A Tupperware Container Full of Secrets” and “Season 3 of The OC on Blu-Ray” to “Incriminating Browser History” and “A Guy Who Refuses to Eat Over-Ripe Bananas.” Each one is darn near perfect in its execution—we dare you not to keep watching (and pausing) for hours at a time.

The Kentucky Derby may be this weekend, but we’re gearing up for Preakness Stakes… or, our favorite part of it, “The Freakness.” This giant outdoor party attracts thousands of people and always promises to be a good time. While you’re in town, why not enjoy some of what Baltimore has to offer, like the sights of the inner harbor and the locally owned shops and restaurants in Fell’s Point. (Or if you’re into baseball, a visit to the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum is a worthy stop.)

In this series’ (near) dystopian future, America has become Illéa, an empire complete with a system of eight castes and The Selection, a competition for the prince’s hand in marriage. America Singer, a Five, becomes one of 35 girls to enter the competition. These books are full of intrigue and plot twists you’ll never see coming—and with Cass’s third book, The One, coming out on May 6, we can’t wait to find out what happens next. If you’re a fan of dystopian literature like The Hunger Games, Divergent and Delirium, this series is a must read.

Say what you want about Gwyneth Paltrow, but the woman can come up with some seriously amazing recipes. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in true #AEOSTYLE with these fish tacos, which combine cod coated in salt and pepper with charred peppers and some good ol’ fashioned grill time. Be sure to top them with this fresh take on cabbage slaw.

Pineapples are this season’s IT print. They lend an immediately cheerful and retro-inspired vibe to every outfit, and we’re simply loving them festooned on our Nina bikini top. Plus, now we’re totally ready for a visit to the Dole plantation in Hawaii.

Okay, so technically this movie doesn’t come out until next week. But we’re already obsessed with the new sure to be hilarious movie starring Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as a couple with a new baby and Zac Efron and Dave Franco as the leaders of a raucous fraternity who moves in next door. We can’t even count how many times we’ve already watched the trailer.

As part of Alternative Spring Break 2014, American Eagle Outfitters has teamed up with the Student Conservation Association to beautify and clean up urban parks throughout the country as part of Alternative Spring Break. We’ll bring you the story of each location throughout April. Join the movement this Spring Break and don’t just go somewhere, do something! Read on to learn more about our San Francisco project from Jean, an SCA team member.

Our volunteers arrived in droves to Golden Gate Park starting at 10am on Day One. I had nonstop registration traffic for about an hour! I loved the energy and excitement of all the volunteers. Once we did a quick introduction, we all headed out to different projects including building planter boxes, painting, cleaning around the building, planting, mulching, and weeding.

I took a deep breath, drink of water and led 25 volunteers into Golden Gate Park to work near Alvord Lake, spreading mulch and weeding planters along the bike path. Immediately, visitors to the park began thanking us as we worked. One man said the mulch was especially needed because “it’s gotten so dusty around these trees. It used to be so pretty. This will be great!” We even got a few thumbs up from people on tour buses as they yelled “thank you!” to us.

Right before lunch, we regrouped with everyone involved in the project and heard from some speakers. They did a great job motivating us and articulating the importance of not only conservation work, but urban conservation. Phil Ginsberg, the General Manager of San Francisco Recreation and Parks, was especially inspiring. He spoke of the need to protect urban greenspaces, to help the environment and give people a connection to nature within cities.

Throughout the week, we forged ahead with our projects, completing them with enthusiasm. I spoke with an SCA alum, Amanda Botsford, who said she came out to the event because she remembered how transformative her SCA experience was and she wanted to reconnect with SCA.

Throughout  the week,  I was so impressed to see volunteers working past 4pm to ensure everything was completed on time. The SCA members from Oakland and Menlo Park were a huge help cleaning up once we completed our work. It was awesome to see them in action! They embodied the spirit of volunteerism, and reminded me why I love working with SCA members.

The project was an incredible success. The park looks better than ever and we left our stamp with the colorful mural created by Chor Boogie.

Moon picked me. She is a rescue and something just said we were meant for each other.

What was it like seeing him/her up for the first time after you purchased the dog?

Moon has a troubled past. She was taken from a puppy mill and traveled in a semi truck from Missouri to Pennsylvania and settled with a local rescuer. I found her online and she came to my house completely shaved, six pounds underweight and scared. She needed her mom, and she got me!

Does your dog bite or lick the mailman?

Moon barks at the mailman and runs away.

It was love at first sight. He cuddled on my lap the entire 2 hour drive home. For the first 2 days he refused to walk, he would only scoot on his belly.

Is the dog an only child?

For now, yes. He really wants a ginger shih tzu sister named Fancy (named after the Reba McIntyre song “Fancy”)

“Bearhead” his nickname, “Lanai” what we call our outdoor patio, “Aunt Sis” what he calls my sister, “Outside” and “Where’s the Fly?” he immediately looks up at the ceiling/sky.

What tricks can he do?

Oliver and I take a ball on the floor and push it back and forth to each other with our noses.
