The process can be a little daunting when it comes to finding the perfect swimsuit for you. So, we enlisted Aerie’s fit and style expert, Jenny Altman, to help! Read below for her quick tips on finding the right swimsuit for your shape.
“Let’s face it – while the prospect of warmer days or a sunny vacay is always exciting, so many of us dread heading to the fitting room with an armful of bathing suits to try on. The trick to making your shopping experience a good one is to remember a few helpful tips!”
1) Be confident.
“Shopping for a swimsuit should be a fun, exciting, shopping experience. Shop for swim when you are feeling good, and remember, your swimsuit is an expression of who you are. You should feel confident in the style, size and print you choose!”
2) Shop your right size.
“This is important in everything you buy, but for swim, it is even more so since there is no covering it up. You will always look better, slimmer and more confident in the right size, even if it’s a size larger than you want to be wearing. BTW – size is just a number! Forget about what that little tag says, and choose the size suit you feel best in.”
3) Shop your best style.
“Not every style works best for every body type. Know your body and learn what makes you look and feel your best. Is it a teeny bikini bottom or hi rise? Is it a padded top or underwire? Try them all and be honest with yourself when it comes to knowing what works best on your body type.
Keeping these tips in mind, it’s time to take your body shape into account.
Let’s be clear – every BODY is beautiful, no matter what shape or size it comes in. Celebrate your unique shape by choosing a suit that shows off your favorite assets, and flatters your less favorite ones. Then it’s time to have some fun with print and color, to reflect your personality and the real you!”

Flat like a surfboard
Top to bottom, straight and narrow
“If you have an athletic build (straight and narrow, up and down), there are many styles you can wear and look great. If it fits your personal style, get adventurous with trendy pieces that look great on your build and emphasize curves for balance.
I love crop bikini tops and hi-rise bikini bottoms, especially in a fun mix and match combo. The top shows off great shoulders and a strong back, plus the bottom gives you a curvy, retro inspired look.”
Curves & waves
Curvy in all the right places
“Own your curves and show ’em off! Adjustable styles that provide a little extra wiggle room are your friend.
A triangle bikini top and a side tie bikini bottom is a classic combo. These have a lot of adjustability, so tie as loose or tight as you need, and move the triangles to fit you perfectly. A matching print, like this cute bandana pattern, is a great way to keep your curves balanced without drawing too much attention to top or bottom.”
You’ve got some girls, girl!
“Creating a little balance with your look can help even out your top. The first tip is to try a solid color on top and a fun print on bottom. This draws the eye down, and balances out your chest area.
Choose a style with underwire support to give the girls a little boost. I also like a top that provides fuller coverage, like the Daisy Bandeau Bikini Top. Bonus – the Daisy is lightly lined, which provides coverage without too much extra padding!
As for the bottom, go with a classic bikini or a mid rise bikini bottom in a really fun print.”
Pear-shaped and proud of it
“Let’s emphasize your top half to give you a curvy look all over. A print on top with solid bottom is a great way to do this. Any extra strappy or embellished detail, and bright colors and prints will help draw the eye up as well.
The Charley bikini top is fab for your shape. Charley provides just the right amount of lift, and curves your girls inward to create a round, full look. This up-top attention will balance out your bottom half.
The Sky Hi Rise bottom is a great option if you’re looking for a little more coverage. You get so much bang for your buck with this type of convertible style – It goes from a skirt, to a mid rise, to a hi rise, all in one!”
Full-figured and fab
“Full figured girls can wear any style bathing suit. More curves do not mean more coverage necessary. Just don’t forget to rock your choice with confidence! My one guideline? Gravitate to smaller prints and solid colors, and look for styles that emphasize your feminine curves.
I love the Retro Halter Bikini top for its amazing shape and support. The halter neckline is very flattering and creates a great curve at the bustline. In terms of bottoms, a hi-rise bikini bottom gives great coverage with flattering details. The ruching slims the hips and the flat panel down the front slims the tummy. Can’t go wrong with a small print like a micro-stripe!”
SPF: small petite frame
Small and mighty!
“Petite is just about height, not about body type. If you are petite, you need to figure out first if you are curvy, bigger on top or bottom, or more of an athletic build. Then you can select a suit style that suits you best. In general, I recommend monochromatic colors for petite ladies to build a longer look. Leg openings with a higher cut, like classic bikinis, side ties, and hipsters are great to elongate the leg!
I love a scoop bikini top and hipster bottom for petite frames. They are the perfect amount of coverage without overwhelming your figure. Looking for a little push in the cups? Try the Perky Triangle Bikini top! Looks like the classic triangle, but with extra oomph.”
Everyone under the sun
Just like a suntan, this looks good on every body
“A tankini or one piece is a great option for all body types. This is a personal preference! If you feel less self conscious with a little more coverage, go for it. Open backs and fun details make a one piece or tankini look as cute as any bikini!”
Now you’re ready! You’ll have the cutest bikini on the beach with Jenny’s tips. Always remember: there’s no such thing as a perfect beach body. The real you is sexy!
