#OOTD: Intern Style

Internship season is in full swing! Luckily for us at AE and Aerie HQ, it’s casual Friday every day…which means we get to wear our favorite Aerie pieces 24/7! But getting your casual looks from a 9AM meeting to dinner with friends can be a challenge. We already knew our merchandising interns have great fashion sense, but mastering the ability to show off their personal style while keeping it professional? They’ve got it down to a science.

Get to know some of our Aerie and AE merchandising interns, and find some major outfit inspiration in how they rocked their favorite new Aerie pieces.

Name: Chelsea S.
Hometown: Jacksonville, Florida
College: University of North Florida
Major: Marketing
What I’ve learned interning: “It’s amazing how much my voice is valued here. All members of your team look to you for fresh ideas since as an intern, you are the target customer. I love being able to influence decisions with my knowledge and opinions. At the same time, you have to accept that as an intern, you don’t have all the answers.”
More about me: “I’ve worked in an Aerie store as a bra expert back home for 2 years!”
Why we love her look: Chelsea’s denim vest is perfect for a little coverage around the office – plus, layers are key for unpredictable air conditioning! She kept it casual and cool with dressed down sandals. The topknot is a no-fuss way to top off her look!

Name: Kristen P.
Hometown: Griffith, Indiana
College: Indiana University
Major: Apparel Merchandising, Minor in Business and Fashion Design
What I’ve learned interning: “Moving to a new town and a new company is a big change! It can be challenging to get adjusted, but it’s a fun learning process.”
More about me: “When studying abroad, I visited 24 cities in 10 different countries!”
Why we love her look: Kristen’s hat and strappy heels put an urban spin on a cute critter print! We’d wear this outfit for a big presentation or meeting – Kristen’s style would definitely help put our best foot forward.

Name: Ali G.
Hometown: Winnetka, Il
College: Indiana University
Major: Apparel Merchandising
What I’ve learned interning: “It’s been an amazing experience seeing everything that goes into getting product in the stores, and seeing how styles I think would do well perform every week. I’ve also been surprised how even though everyone is really nice, young, and fun, they work super hard and all are amazing at their jobs.”
More about me: “At home I live on the lake, so I’ve also started to take up a hobby in paddleboarding! It’s super fun, relaxing, and also good exercise.”
Why we love her look: We love Ali’s glam and girly style! Her accessories add a bit of edge, but she keeps it pretty with easy, beachy waves. A light sweater also makes her look workplace appropriate. We’ll say it again – layering is key!

Name: Megan L.
Hometown: Elizabeth, PA
College: University of Pittsburgh
Major: Marketing & Supply Chain Management
What I’ve learned interning: “My favorite part of the internship is that I am encouraged to use my creativity and think outside the box. It is amazing to wake up every morning to go do something I am passionate about! The most surprising part of the internship for me is that each associate you meet really wants you to succeed. This program places success right at your fingertips, you just have to grab it!”
More about me: “I have read the book Looking for Alaska over 10 times.”
Why we love her look: Megan’s outfit is comfy, but still pulled together. This look is perfect for 9 to 5 – and beyond! Just toss on a great pair of heels and you’re ready for your post-work evening plans.

Name: Ellie S.
Hometown: Indianapolis, IN
College: Indiana University
Major: Marketing and Apparel Merchandising
What I’ve learned interning: “The Back to School season, in my opinion, is the best part of the year! It has been so exciting to see all of our hard work pay off with HUGE denim sales. It has definitely been challenging to learn every detail of each pair of jeans, from the fit to the exact wash…but now, after weeks of working with the product, it’s so fun to help my friends find the perfect pair of AE jeans!”
More about me: “I just studied abroad in Milan, Italy for five months! When I was there I learned how to make homemade pasta, gnocchi and tons of different sauces.”
Why we love her look: This cute boho style feels so fresh and fun! While it’s perfect for summertime, the pretty jewel tone colors also make it a great transition look to take you between the fall and summer seasons.

Name: Kelsey B.
Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA
College: University of Notre Dame
Major: Marketing & International Business
What I’ve learned interning: “All the financial metrics and ratios that are specific to the retail industry. College accounting classes can’t prepare you for this!!”
More about me: “I once spent an entire summer living out of a tent and hiking in Oregon & Washington!”
Why we love her look: Some days when we’re running out the door, a sneaker is the only shoe that will do. Plus, this graphic fleece is the perfect solution for those days when you just need to be comfy, but still cute. Kelsey’s taking tomboy to the next level with this look!

Name: Kristin S.
Hometown: Richmond, VA
College: University Of Virginia
Major: Media Studies
What I’ve learned interning: “How much it has taught me about the working world as well as about who I am and what I like.”
More about me: “One quirky fact about me is that I am OBSESSED with astrology!”
Why we love her look: Kristen’s look is flirty, but still super office appropriate! We love the Aerie Jumpsuit paired with a fun platform heel for a little bit of a dressier look. This is a style we’d wear to work, but totally rock on the weekends, too!

Name: Natalia C.
Hometown: Cincinnati, OH
College: Anderson University
Major: Marketing and Spanish
What I’ve learned interning: “It’s definitely been a challenge getting familiar with all of our Aerie undies choices…there are so many! But probably my favorite part has been getting to see product before it comes out!”
More about me: “It’s my second year interning at AE!”
Why we love her look: Her style is totally sporty chic, from her jacket to her wedge sneakers! We love how her bold berry lip adds some extra color and a feminine touch to her style (plus, it matches her bralette)! Natalia’s got the laws of layering down – a pretty bralette or bandeau peeking out from under a tank can act as an amazing accessory!

Name: Taylor J.
Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA
College: Kent State University
Major: Fashion Merchandising
What I’ve learned interning: “So much planning goes into every single style, and it takes place so far in advance! Also, our opinions are valued, so it’s important to stay strong in your point of view when presenting to higher-ups!”
More about me: “My favorite things to do in my free time are practicing yoga and hanging out with my friends and family.”
Why we love her look: Who says you can’t wear your comfiest pants to work, and still look amazing? Taylor’s style is so downtown cool! We love how she dressed up her basic look with some fun heels and a statement necklace. Joggers are a great alternative to your favorite jeans when you feel like mixing it up!

#AskJenny Question of the Week: What Are Sister Sizes?

So we all know our bra size…but what is a sister size, anyway? Our fit and style expert, Jenny Altman, is here to explain the ins and outs of sister sizing for the confused among us.

Below, watch Jenny’s quick explanation of a sister size, and read on for even more info on whether a sister size could be a good option for you!

Q: What’s the difference between my bra size and my sister size? And will it work for me?

A: You’ve all probably heard sales associates mention “sister size” when it comes to bra size. A sister size is really just one size up or down from the size you normally wear. An associate may suggest trying a sister size if you’re spilling out or not fully filling out a particular style, or if they don’t have your size in stock.

Sometimes wearing a sister size works flawlessly, other times it does not work as well. It all depends on two factors: how “full” of a cup size you are, and the style of the bra. You really just have to try on different styles and sizes to see what will work best for you!

For example, let’s say you are a 32C.

If you are a more shallow C, sizing down a cup size and up a band size (34B) can work well, especially in a full coverage bra style like the Sofie or the Sunnie. Just keep in mind that wearing a larger band size will offer less support, because your bra’s support should always come from the band, not the straps!

If you ARE a full C cup, you could consider sizing up a cup size and down a band size (30D). Trying your larger sister size may work best in a cup with less coverage, like a demi cup style (I love the Ella Gel or the Blakely!).

If you are, however, a “full” C, and your band and cup size work for you in most every bra, then sizing into the sister size is usually not your best option. You already know you need that C, so try to stick with it when possible.

The sister size is really just a way of saying, “hey, even though you normally wear a size 4 jeans, the super skinny style in size 6 will probably work, just as a boyfriend jean in a size 2 would”. Try your actual size and try the sister size in the styles you like, then you see which one best fits your cup as well as your band size. If you aren’t sure, ask one of our Aerie bra fit experts for their opinion!

#AskJenny Question of the Week: Multiway Bras that Do It All

Most of us Aerie girls have at least one multi-way bra in our bra wardrobe…but are we using it to its fullest potential? Our fit and style expert, Jenny Altman (@ILoveAGood), answers your latest #AskJenny question on how multi-ways can be so much more than strapless, below!

Q: I know there are other ways you can wear Aerie’s convertible bras besides just strapless – but I’m lost! What exactly are the different ways to wear a multi-way bra?

A: The great thing about having a multi-way bra in your closet is that it is so versatile! You do not need a bra for each outfit, you just need a great do-it-all bra. Aerie offers several multi-way bras in both pushup and lightly lined…functioning as 6+ bras in one!

My personal favorite is the Mia Multi-Way pushup bra…it adds just the right amount of lift that’s perfect with everything from your strappy tanks to most formal dresses. A great everyday option is our Audrey Multi-Way bra for you lightly lined girls!

If you only have budget for one multi-way bra, I always suggest nude for maximum versatility.

The animation below gives a step-by-step guide for all the different ways to wear your favorite multi-way (here, it’s the Mia Vintage Lace Multi-Way pushup bra). With so many ways to wear, this bra can really go the distance – and stretch your dollar!

So, Aerie girls, don’t let the straps on your newest multi-way purchase collect dust in your drawer! Use them to their full potential and you’ll see what a versatile must-have a multi-way bra is in your wardrobe. They are truly the best investment bras ever!

Music Monday: Aerie’s Midsummer Playlist

musicmonday

It feels like just yesterday that we were longing for the heat, sun and summer jams. Now it’s almost the middle of the season! Don’t let those pool parties slip away without having the perfect soundtrack to the splashes.

With this selection of tunes, we mixed up fresh new sounds with a few throwbacks for good measure. Get to know some of our favorite power ladies including Charlie XCX with her song “Boom Clap”; Ellie Goulding with “Goodness Gracious” off her hit record Halcyon Days; and “On a Roll” from the dance pop duo, Icona Pop. Also, take note of newcomer, Elle Eyre. We’ve had our eyes, ahem, ears on her for awhile. Trust, her song “Deeper” is an earworm.

We also reached as far back as 1990 to bring you Bell Biv DeVoe’s “Poison,” ‘cause, let’s face it, that song is timeless. And we jumped forward a whole decade to remember how cool the Dandy Warhols were (and still are) with their song “Bohemian Like You.” Then topped off our trip down memory lane with AlunaGeorge’s cover of “This is How We Do It”.

Go ahead. Slip into your bikini, toss on those sunnies and push play! Listen to our Midsummer Playlist on Spotify here.

#AskJenny Question of the Week: Laundering Your Aerie Undies

This week’s question is all about laundering your Aerie Undies! Our takeaways? Not all undies are created equal (when it comes to laundering, at least!)…and some need just a little extra TLC. Read on for Jenny’s tips and tricks on laundering your undies!

FP5T1275 - crop

Jenny’s got the quick fix to keeping your Aerie undies just like new!

Q: What’s the best way to wash my Aerie undies?

A: Now that you’ve got new undies you love, you want to make sure they last. It’s just as important to take good care of your undies as you would your bras, swimsuits, and clothes.

For sturdy cotton undies, go ahead and throw them in the washer and dryer as you normally would. However, for lace undies, or even undies that are on the delicate side, I don’t recommend washing them like the basics. Washing items in hot water, with harsh things like jeans and towels, can destroy anything that’s a bit sensitive.

For all lace undies, I do like to give them a wash by hand either in the sink, or in the shower while you’re showering. They wash so easily and dry really quickly when you hang them on a hanger or over a doorknob. If you do want to stick with the laundry machine, do a gentle cycle once a week and put undies in with other delicate items like knits and blouses. I use cold water all the time (more environmentally friendly and laundry friendly) and I don’t use the dryer for delicates. If you notice your undies get caught around the agitator (the piece in the middle of the machine), then stick the undies in a laundry bag. Those agitators are death for delicates!

That’s all for today! Have more questions for Jenny? Tweet your question @Aerie using #AskJenny, or email AskJenny@ae.com.

#AskJenny Question of the Week: Backless Doesn’t Have to Mean Braless!

What to wear under your tricky summer tops and dresses this season? This week, you all wanted to know how to stay chic this summer without breaking the bank. Jenny’s back with some expert answers to your biggest summer style SOS!

Jenny's here to turn your bra "oh no's" into "whoa's"!

Q: Which type of bra would you recommend for summery shirts such as flowy, backless, strapless, spaghetti straps, and cross backs? I have a lot of fun shirts and a couple dresses I want to wear (preferably without a tanktop underneath), but my bras always seem to look funky underneath. The bra will almost always show on the sides, the straps might show, or just don’t flow well with the shirt. It’s a pain and makes me consider going bra-less. I don’t want to buy a bra for every shirt because i’m on a college girl’s budget. Please help!

Jenny:  I LOVE this bra question. It really is on everyone’s mind for summer!

You do not need a bra for each outfit, you just need a great do-it-all bra.

First up is a bra I can’t live without, the best investment bra ever; a multi-way bra. Multi way bras are at minimum a great strapless bra, and it’s up to you whether you want padded or not. I like the Mia Multi-Way Pushup bra since it gives great lift and has some oomph in the cups.

I wear it mostly as a strapless, but with a quick change of the straps, you can wear the bra as a halter, one shoulder, deep v-halter, and more! The versatility makes this bra function as 8+ bras in one.

Mia Multi-Way

Have it all with the Mia Multi-Way! While she’s a great strapless option, she can be styled 8 different ways for all your tricky tops.

Second for me is another life changing bra, the Lace Bare Pushup bra. (We also have our original, non-pushup Bare Bra for all you lightly lined ladies!)

bare bra

Our Lace Pushup Bare Bra is one of Jenny’s favorite tricks for getting the backless look…without going braless!

This bra allows you the freedom of going braless (no bra across the back!) while getting the coverage and support of a strapless. The adhesive is amazing (just remember…no deodorant, powder, perfume or lotion where the bra goes or else it won’t stick!). This bra will work with everything, from a backless formal dress to an open back tank top. Take good care of this bra and you’ll go back to it in your drawer forever to solve tons of outfit dilemmas.

With either option, go with nude for the most versatility with your outfits!

That’s it for today! Check out more quick fixes from Jenny here, and look out for more of her answers to your questions each Monday right here on the Aerie blog!
