Holiday Survival Tips

The Holiday season is upon us, and with it comes fun memories and traditions. The downside? The season also comes with a less welcome side of stress, between wrapping a million gifts, long lines and listening to your Great Uncle Jeff tell that story (again).

A quick checklist of the essentials is key to getting through the craziness that comes with the season. We asked Aerie’s fit and style expert, Jenny Altman, for some of her Holiday survival tips and must-have Aerie items. Read on for Jenny’s tips below!

Jennys Holiday Survival Tips

Everything you need to survive the holidays starts at Aerie!

Jenny’s Essentials:

1. The Romantic Lace Bralette: The soft structure shows off your most natural shape. Just enough support with tons of comfort!

2. The Pushup Bare Bra: This is the best bra investment you can make! It will get you through every holiday event.

3. Outta-Sight Undie: Good undies are also important and panty lines are not allowed! This is a no-fuss option under any dress.

4. Moccasins: I can never have enough slippers around the holidays, and these are my favorite on the site right now.

5. The Aerie Blanket Scarf: I bought 4 of these blanket scarves for friends as gifts! You cannot go wrong!

6. Aerie Waffle Sleep Set: Mix & match pajamas are a favorite of mine for winter.

7. Aerie Flannel Pajama Pant: I love flannel bottoms with a drawstring. I love the ones with the shopping bear!

Jenny’s Holiday Survival Tips:

1. I like to glam up my holiday look with some jewelry, and this is where I make a little investment! I go for classic, personal pieces that make you feel special,

2. I love with the house smells delicious. If I’m not baking anything (which I’m probably not), then a yummy candle is the thing. I love fig scents, but pine smells really woodsy…a smell I appreciate living in the city!

3. A great pair of shoes that can carry you through all your holiday events is a must! For me, it’s a functional bootie in winter, with a touch of glam.

4. A live Christmas tree is a must for me. There is nothing that smells better and makes you live the holiday moment more than the scent of real pine. This smell reminds me that I’m home every time I walk through the door.

5. I love to eat…and there is no time I enjoy it more! My mother-in-law inspired me to make some amazing soups. I’m a vegetarian, so this Avocado Soup is my favorite (you sprinkle popcorn on it!).

Super-Easy Avocado Soup

Ingredients:

4-5 ripe avocados

Broth (I use vegetable, but feel free to use chicken broth)

A squeeze of lemon to taste

Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions:

Blend all ingredients together, then serve at room temperature with a handful of popcorn sprinkled on top. Then eat the rest of the popcorn, of course!

6. Finally, the key to getting me through the holiday season (especially a cold, New York City one) is a trip planned with my family for January! When I know there is something warm in my future, it gives me something special to look forward to.

Thanks for the tips, Jenny! We hope you have a fun-filled holiday season, Aerie girls!

Xoxo,

Aerie

Follow Her Friday: Anna Martemucci

On Fridays, we like to do a special shout-out to #AerieREAL girls who seriously inspire. This Follow Her Friday, we’d like you to meet Anna Martemucci, who comes to us by way of Los Angeles/Brooklyn.  Between writing, directing, acting, producing, and founding Periods Films, Anna took some time to chat with us. Read more below!

images

Multitasking at its best! Here, she’s on set in a moving car with her team, filming on location in Pittsburgh.

Aerie: Hi, Anna! Thanks for taking the time to talk with us today. Tell us your story in a nutshell!

Anna: I grew up in small towns in North Dakota and Pennsylvania but my parents emigrated here from Rome, Italy and Prague, Czech Republic. I became first a writer and then a filmmaker. I love telling stories that promote the notions of human equality and compassion. I also want to make people laugh and feel connected to the world. And I really enjoy hot tubs.

Aerie: What does #AerieREAL mean to you?

Anna: When I saw the Aerie Real campaign, to me it meant that [Aerie] was taking a step towards a better world! All through growing up, every woman I knew, no matter what she looked like, was obsessed with losing weight and striving to look perfect, including me. Often times this obsession was so huge it would be at the detriment of our physical and mental health.  I think a lot of that is because we’re sort of brainwashed by the constant images of airbrushed faux perfection we have flying at our faces constantly, and the fact that most of our movies and TV shows are populated largely with women who have very similar body types to each other.  I love the no airbrushing idea. If we can all admit that every single human being is a flawed little snowflake of gorgeous imperfection, and that imperfection can be just as beautiful (if not more so!) than our current, narrow idea of “perfection,” then maybe we’ll all feel more free! There are so many more interesting things to think about than losing weight or looking perfect, after all.

Anna and Zachary Quinto, 0495

Aerie: What makes YOU #AerieREAL?

Anna: I really love what I do.

Aerie: Where do you see yourself in 3 years?

Making movies or a cinematic TV show, hopefully somehow involving puppets. Kidding about the puppets…kind of.  I hope I’m telling stories in some form. Maybe raising a small baby into a grown human. Feeding self properly. Traveling and living and loving, baby.*  (*said in a drawl like Matthew McConaughey).

Aerie: What’s your favorite inspirational quote?

Anna: There are so many! But I love this one, it is so good for the creative types (which I suspect every human being is in some form):

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. … No artist is pleased. [There is] no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others.”  –  Martha Graham

Aerie: What’s your biggest accomplishment thus far?

Anna: [My films] Breakup at a Wedding, Hollidaysburgh, and Periods.  These are the 3 movies I’ve made with my team at Periods Films, which includes my brother-in-law Philip Quinaz and husband Victor Quinaz. My biggest personal accomplishment has been learning how to be a team player after years of being an isolated writer. Other people are where it’s at.

Say…cheese? Anna strikes a pose with Periods Films actor Brian Shoaf before shooting the Periods Film “FOPS”.

Aerie: Do you have a role model? If so, who is he or she, and why does he or she inspire you?

Anna: I have so many role models. I find life so much better and all of my big dreams more manageable when I focus on the people and artists that I love. So the concept of role models is big for me!  The Coen Brothers, John Hughes, Sophia Coppola, Paul Thomas Anderson, Richard Linklater, Lena Dunham, Wes Anderson, Louis C.K., Alexander Payne, Jill Soloway…they are all storytelling heroes of mine, among many others. I love the way that each of these storytellers has a very particular voice, one that can really only be theirs, and through the specificity of their voice, something universal is achieved. That’s what I strive for in my own work.

Aerie: What’s your favorite Aerie item?

Anna: This blanket scarf is super cute and I want it.

Lights, camera…action! Some of the Periods Films crew get together on location for “Nam.”

Aerie: What are your three things you always have with you?

Anna: Shoes that look good but that I can walk in for at least 20 NYC city blocks, blotting papers (curse of the shiny face), a positive outlook.

Aerie: If you could pick any actress or actor to play you in your own movie, who would it be?

Anna: Amy Sedaris.

Making doing it all look easy! Here’s Anna on the set of “Medal of Victory” in Wisconsin.

Aerie: Do you have a secret talent, skill or quirk? Do tell!

Anna: Badminton. The tiny rackets make me feel powerful and I just love saying “shuttlecock” as much as possible in this short life.

Thanks for chatting with us, Anna! To keep up with Anna, follower her on Instagram and Twitter   @AnnaMartemucci!

Follow Her Friday: Sam Ellis

Every day, we’re inspired by the stories of our #AerieREAL girls. Today, we’re featuring Sam Ellis! Sam is a college athlete who overcame compartment syndrome early in her collegiate career. She went on to compete for all 4 years, finally playing in the lacrosse World Cup for the first ever Israeli women’s lacrosse team. Get to know Sam by reading her inspiring story below!

Go #33!

Sam: I was #33 in high school, so wearing the number again was symbolic of my beginning and my end.

Aerie: Hi Sam! Thanks so much for chatting with us. First, tell us a little about yourself!

Sam: I graduated from college just over a year ago and now I live in NYC. In college, I was lucky enough to be a member of the Princeton women’s varsity lacrosse team. It was honestly the best time of my life – minus the 5 AM practices.

Lacrosse runs in the family!

Sam: Both my brother and sister played lacrosse in college, so it was always pretty special when they would come and support me when I played.

Aerie: Then you joined the first Israeli National Women’s lacrosse team! What was that experience like?

Sam: While I was a senior in college I tried out for the first ever Israeli National Women’s lacrosse team. Soon after I was selected to play on the team, I became an Israeli citizen, flew to Israel to train with my team, and then we competed in the 2013 World Games where we finished in 8th place out of 19 teams. Lacrosse has allowed me to experience so many things I never thought I would get a chance to be a part of. I attended an incredible university that has given me limitless opportunities, I had an athletic career that gave me some of the best friends and memories, and I was given the chance to further my lacrosse experience beyond college, and into something that was more meaningful than I ever thought was possible.

The Israeli Lacrosse Team celebrates a win against Germany!

Sam: This was Israel’s first win against Germany! I’m number 33!

Aerie: What does #AerieREAL mean to you?

Sam: #AerieREAL is about being comfortable with yourself and loving who you are on the inside and out. When it comes to girls, we all have a complex. But the most important thing that a girl can do is accept herself for who she is and allow that acceptance to evolve into confidence.

The Israeli Lacrosse team isn't afraid to get dirty!

Sam: My team and me, covered in mud from the Dead Sea!

Aerie: What makes you #AerieREAL?

Sam: When I was in college I was diagnosed with compartment syndrome in my legs, which makes it difficult to be active and have full blood circulation in your muscles. This is due to a inadequate amount of space in your legs for your muscles to expand properly. It’s a growing injury that many athletes are getting diagnosed with in recent years.

I got diagnosed with compartment syndrome when I was freshman in college. Since I wanted to play lacrosse for all four years, I decided to get surgery in the fall of my freshmen year. Even though the surgery was successful and I was able to continue to play lacrosse, the surgery left behind four 3 inch scars on my legs. I’m completely self conscious of my scars and in the first few years of recovery I was embarrassed of them.  Wearing skirts or dresses was tough because people were always staring at these dark indents and lines on my legs. As I got older, I began to  embrace my scars as my own, I feel less self conscious then I did 4 years ago and have begun to accept them as part of me. My acceptance of these visual reminders of what i once endured is what I’d like to think makes me #AerieReal.

Sam's teammates in Malta!

Sam: Having fun on the beach with teammates in our senior year of college!

Winner's Circle

Sam: This is a picture taken with my team and my baby cousins. After a win we would chant in Hebrew and jump side to side in a circle. My cousins decided to join us in the winning celebration!

Aerie: What’s your favorite inspirational quote?

Sam: “Don’t lower your expectations to meet your performance. Raise your level of performance to meet your expectations. Expect the best of yourself, and then do what is necessary to make it a reality.”- Ralph Marston

Aerie: What has been your biggest accomplishment thus far?

Sam: Representing Israel in the 2013 World Cup games was a big accomplishment for me. Being an Israeli citizen and representing my country in a way that I could make an impact has fulfilled me in ways I can’t explain. I hope to continue to give back to Israel, especially though the Israel Lacrosse community. I admire all the people who have contributed and volunteered to help to grow the the sport that I love in a country that I admire.

Sam's family selfie!

Sam: This was taken after my Mom’s birthday this year. I convinced my whole fam to take a selfie with me!

Aerie: Do you have a role model? If so, who is he or she, and why does he or she inspire you?

Sam: This is going to sound cheesy but I really look up to my parents. They’ve been together for 31 years and they’ve taught me everything. My mom is my rock and my everything. She has loved me in a way that I never thought was possible and she has always been there for me and my family. My dad is my number 1 fan and hero. He has always pushed me to be great but never overworked me to be something or to do something I wasn’t passionate about.  My parents are the type of parents that just want me to be happy, feel special, and most importantly, they want me to know how loved I am. I hope I can be like that to someone one day.

Charlie and Lulu are the most adorable duo!

Sam: I’m obsessed with my dogs. Charlie and Lulu are the most adorable duo!

Aerie: Do you have a favorite Aerie item? Do share!

Sam: I’m an athlete at heart so I’m always wearing sports bras. I’m obsessed with the Aerie Seamless Racerback Bra–  its perfect for traveling or when you’re stepping out to run a quick errand.

Aerie: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, All, or Nothing?

Sam: All – Instagram takes priority though.

Aerie: Favorite song to listen to in the car or working out?

Sam: “Life of the Party” by Shawn Mendes has become my go to song for everything.

Aerie: What’s your favorite part of the day?

Sam: I love the afternoon mainly because I love eating lunch- it’s the time of day where you can eat any kind of food!

Sam's best friends

Sam: This is me with two of my best friends, Alison and Hilary. To me they are Nabs and Hug. I’m so happy I met them during school because they are a huge part of my life now. I’d be lost without them!

Thanks for chatting, Sam! Follow Sam on Instagram @SamHopEllis, or Twitter @SamEllyz to keep up with this girl to watch. We want to know your #AerieREAL story! Share your story here, or on Instagram or Twitter with #AerieREAL!

Xoxo,
