Follow Her Friday: Anna Martemucci

On Fridays, we like to do a special shout-out to #AerieREAL girls who seriously inspire. This Follow Her Friday, we’d like you to meet Anna Martemucci, who comes to us by way of Los Angeles/Brooklyn.  Between writing, directing, acting, producing, and founding Periods Films, Anna took some time to chat with us. Read more below!

Multitasking at its best! Here, she’s on set in a moving car with her team, filming on location in Pittsburgh.

Aerie: Hi, Anna! Thanks for taking the time to talk with us today. Tell us your story in a nutshell!

Anna: I grew up in small towns in North Dakota and Pennsylvania but my parents emigrated here from Rome, Italy and Prague, Czech Republic. I became first a writer and then a filmmaker. I love telling stories that promote the notions of human equality and compassion. I also want to make people laugh and feel connected to the world. And I really enjoy hot tubs.

Aerie: What does #AerieREAL mean to you?

Anna: When I saw the Aerie Real campaign, to me it meant that [Aerie] was taking a step towards a better world! All through growing up, every woman I knew, no matter what she looked like, was obsessed with losing weight and striving to look perfect, including me. Often times this obsession was so huge it would be at the detriment of our physical and mental health.  I think a lot of that is because we’re sort of brainwashed by the constant images of airbrushed faux perfection we have flying at our faces constantly, and the fact that most of our movies and TV shows are populated largely with women who have very similar body types to each other.  I love the no airbrushing idea. If we can all admit that every single human being is a flawed little snowflake of gorgeous imperfection, and that imperfection can be just as beautiful (if not more so!) than our current, narrow idea of “perfection,” then maybe we’ll all feel more free! There are so many more interesting things to think about than losing weight or looking perfect, after all.

Aerie: What makes YOU #AerieREAL?

Anna: I really love what I do.

Aerie: Where do you see yourself in 3 years?

Making movies or a cinematic TV show, hopefully somehow involving puppets. Kidding about the puppets…kind of.  I hope I’m telling stories in some form. Maybe raising a small baby into a grown human. Feeding self properly. Traveling and living and loving, baby.*  (*said in a drawl like Matthew McConaughey).

Aerie: What’s your favorite inspirational quote?

Anna: There are so many! But I love this one, it is so good for the creative types (which I suspect every human being is in some form):

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. … No artist is pleased. [There is] no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others.”  –  Martha Graham

Aerie: What’s your biggest accomplishment thus far?

Anna: [My films] Breakup at a Wedding, Hollidaysburgh, and Periods.  These are the 3 movies I’ve made with my team at Periods Films, which includes my brother-in-law Philip Quinaz and husband Victor Quinaz. My biggest personal accomplishment has been learning how to be a team player after years of being an isolated writer. Other people are where it’s at.

Say…cheese? Anna strikes a pose with Periods Films actor Brian Shoaf before shooting the Periods Film “FOPS”.

Aerie: Do you have a role model? If so, who is he or she, and why does he or she inspire you?

Anna: I have so many role models. I find life so much better and all of my big dreams more manageable when I focus on the people and artists that I love. So the concept of role models is big for me!  The Coen Brothers, John Hughes, Sophia Coppola, Paul Thomas Anderson, Richard Linklater, Lena Dunham, Wes Anderson, Louis C.K., Alexander Payne, Jill Soloway…they are all storytelling heroes of mine, among many others. I love the way that each of these storytellers has a very particular voice, one that can really only be theirs, and through the specificity of their voice, something universal is achieved. That’s what I strive for in my own work.

Aerie: What’s your favorite Aerie item?

Anna: This blanket scarf is super cute and I want it.

Lights, camera…action! Some of the Periods Films crew get together on location for “Nam.”

Aerie: What are your three things you always have with you?

Anna: Shoes that look good but that I can walk in for at least 20 NYC city blocks, blotting papers (curse of the shiny face), a positive outlook.

Aerie: If you could pick any actress or actor to play you in your own movie, who would it be?

Anna: Amy Sedaris.

Making doing it all look easy! Here’s Anna on the set of “Medal of Victory” in Wisconsin.

Aerie: Do you have a secret talent, skill or quirk? Do tell!

Anna: Badminton. The tiny rackets make me feel powerful and I just love saying “shuttlecock” as much as possible in this short life.

Thanks for chatting with us, Anna! To keep up with Anna, follower her on Instagram and Twitter   @AnnaMartemucci!

Xoxo,

Aerie

See how bloggers babes, Jen from  Skirt The Rules, Bethany from Bethany Kate and Jessica from The Steele Maiden style this cozy, must-have sweater below.

Meet Jen:
Jen is an Arizona native, a New York transplant and the creator of the personal style blog  Skirt The Rules.  She blogs to share style inspiration and other musings of living, working, and playing in New York City.

What Inspired Jen’s Look:
When it feels like 10°F outside, you better believe I’ll be bundled up from head to toe.  To me, comfort is key, but looking put-together comes in a close second.  I love the coziness of a thick, knit sweater with a simple pair of leggings.  Chunky-heeled booties keep the outfit looking refined while a pom beanie adds a little bit of holiday cheer.

Meet Bethany:
Bethany is the writer of the style blog Bethany Kate. The blog features her own personal style as well as the style of her little girl Grace (who’s quickly becoming a bit of a fashionista herself!). She describes her style as classic and feminine and is always on the hunt for fun new pieces. She loves looking for outfit inspiration and hopes to inspire others, too!

What inspired Bethany’s Look:
I’m a huge fan of plaid and if you raid my wardrobe you will find many a plaid scarf, but a limited selection of other plaid clothing items. This is because I generally like a hint of the pattern in an outfit but find it a little bold to wear as a whole garment. When I saw this sweater at Aerie I knew it was the perfect way to transition plaid into other aspects of my closet. The subtle nature of the pattern means that it’s not overbearing and made it easy to style. I kept the rest of my outfit simple with navy denim skinny jeans (which highlight the navy stripe in the sweater) and a neutral bag and booties. The neutral accessories ensure that the sweater is the focal point of the outfit. I love this sweater for fall going into winter. It’s definitely the prettiest, coziest piece I’ve bought to date this season!

Meet Jessica:
Born in Pennsylvania, living in New York City, and always planning her next adventure, Jessica Steele is the style blogger behind The Steele Maiden. When she’s not blogging you can find her working as a Graphic Designer, exploring city streets, or shoe shopping.

What inspired Jessica’s Look:
Going home to PA for the holidays means more casual looks than I usually wear in NYC – but I still like to throw in a few signature touches. I started with this over-sized sweater – it’s a great basic and the graphic ‘Oui’ adds a bit of French fun.  I can never resist a little print mixing so I grabbed my favorite plaid blanket scarf and leopard booties, then topped it off with a pop of color from this bright tote.  Distressed denim and ivory mittens kept me warm and cozy for an afternoon outdoors.. dreaming of my next trip to Paris!

DIY: Glitter Ombré Holiday Nails

Keeping in step with ombré, one of our favorite beauty trends, we winterized our go-to mani with a sparkly twist. We partnered with Nails By Dallas at our most recent photoshoot where they taught us step-by-step how to make the cutest, yet simple holiday mani! Read on below to learn how to create the perfect glitter ombre nail.

DIY: Glitter Ombre Holiday Nails

1. First, organize your supplies. You’ll need a chunky gold glitter polish, a sheer pink polish and some fine gold or rose gold craft glitter (we like Martha Stewart’s Rose Quartz). Also, a file, buffer, orange wood stick or cuticle pusher, small nail art brush, alcohol and cuticle oil.

2. Start by manicuring your nails: file to preferred shape, push cuticles back gently and lightly buff the shine off nail plate. Cleanse nails with alcohol to remove oil.

3. If you have a preferred base coat, apply that first and let dry. Then apply two coats of Aerie’s light pink polish and let dry. (Shop at your local Aerie store!DIY: Glitter Ombre Holiday Nails

4. Start by dabbing the chunky gold glitter on just the free edge of the nail. Take your small nail art brush and gently brush glitter towards the cuticle. *When doing this, use a feather touch to ensure no streaks in your base polish* DIY: Glitter Ombre Holiday Nails

5. Next, mix some craft glitter in with your chunky glitter polish and apply the same way. This will add smaller pieces of glitter to your design, making the ombré look really pop. DIY: Glitter Ombre Holiday Nails

6. End with a top coat of your choice and be sure to cap the free edge where all the glitter is!

DIY: The Perfect Holiday Hot Chocolate

If we could sip only one type of drink all winter it would most definitely be hot chocolate! Last week we hosted our first ever Holiday Blogger Party for our friends in New York City and had our very own DIY Hot Chocolate Bar! Despite our attempts to persuade our team to build a hot chocolate bar at our office (we’re not feeling optimistic) we had so much fun decorating our drinks with very necessary amounts of whipped cream that made our hot chocolates incredibly Instagram worthy. Read on below to see how we created THE perfect hot chocolate!

AERIE-BLOGGER-PARTY_0478Whether it’s from a packet or a homemade recipe, pour your hot chocolate mix into your favorite winter mug! (Ours are plastic – easier to clean up at the party!)
AERIE-BLOGGER-PARTY_0497Load on the whipped cream! Don’t forget to shake the bottle, push down a bit into your mug, and swirl!

AERIE-BLOGGER-PARTY_0508 Next step…add MORE chocolate! We placed chocolate chips on the whipped cream and sprinkled a dash of cinnamon on top. We placed little mini marshmallows on top AND added one large marshmallow right in the middle.

AERIE-BLOGGER-PARTY_0548

Last step? Add a candy cane. Stir as desired!

Enjoy! Stay cozy!

STYLE CHALLENGE: THE CAPE

The Cape is one of our favorite layering pieces this season! Whether you’re staying in or going out, the Cape is perfect for throwing on over your cozy tops. Blogger babes Bows & Sequins and My Style Vita show us how they style this must-have trend below!

Meet Jessica:

What Inspired Jessica’s Look:
When I’m not dressed up in my fanciest dresses for festive fetes, you can usually find me relaxing and unwinding around my apartment during the holiday season. My off-duty attire revolves around comfortable and cozy basics that I can mix and match. The Aerie Cape is the perfect PJ-topper because it’s super snuggly, not bulky at all (you can layer it over long sleeves!), and so apres-ski chic, too. Who knew snuggly and stylish could work together?! (And you can’t beat the fuzzy hood!)

STYLE CHALLENGE: THE CAPE

What Inspired Jessica’s Look:
My inspiration for this perfect Cape was keeping the rest of my look pretty simple to let the bold piece standout. I paired it with my favorite Skinny Jeans from AE and my go to booties this fall. The color of the long sleeve top provides the perfect amount of contrast to the grey poncho to pull the whole look together.
