Real Talk with Nicolette Flaherty, Graphic Designer

Get REAL with Nicolette Flaherty, Aerie’s Graphic Designer! Read on to learn more about how she helps to create Aerie’s marketing for each season, her must-have gift for Holiday and what #AerieREAL means to her.

Real Talk with Nicolette Flaherty, Graphic Designer - Aerie What’s a typical morning for you like?

While the first thought that runs through my mind when I hear my alarm is usually “MORE SLEEP!,” “MUST EAT” is a close second and always wins. I like to start my day with a hearty breakfast and loud music. My morning routine of selecting my outfit (which takes several attempts) and styling my messy hair is usually accompanied by a solo dance party, plenty of water and a number of humorous text messages from my friends.

What’s your favorite design that you’ve worked on for Holiday?

This holiday has been one of my favorite seasons to work on. The photography and product are gorgeous and easily helped to provide me inspiration during my designing, so its hard to narrow it down to just one project. I had a lot of fun designing our holiday gift guide mailer that will be mailed to customers across the country (look for it!) and I can’t wait to start shopping for everything featured.

What Aerie item do you have on your Holiday wish list?

I definitely have my eye on the lace bralettes – I love showing off the straps & details under a low back shirt or a sweater. I feel as though that little pop can complete my outfit and I always get compliments. The new holiday colors are perfect for the season, too.

Real Talk with Nicolette Flaherty, Graphic Designer - AerieDo you have any favorite Holiday recipes? Do share!

I love cooking around the holidays as much as I love giving gifts, so I like to combine the two. My favorite little gift to give to friends or family or to take with me to a party as a “thank you” are Sweet & Spicy Rosemary Nuts. And I’m always sure to make a little (a lot) extra for myself.

Sweet & Spicy Rosemary Nuts Recipe
• 4 cups raw, unsalted mixed nuts (I like to use cashews, pecans, almonds and walnuts)
• 4 tablespoons butter, melted
• 4 tablespoons fresh rosemary, chopped
• 2 tablespoons brown sugar
• 2 teaspoons course salt
• 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Roast the nuts as-is for ten minutes.
Mix together in a bowl the melted butter, rosemary, brown sugar, salt and cayenne pepper. Add in the warm nuts and toss to combine.
These can be served warm after making, or saved in an airtight container and set out at room temperature.

Describe your personal style in 3 words:

This is tough. I have a plethora of random interests and with that I tend to transform my style based on what I feel like doing that day. Sometimes I’m super chic, other times I’m boho or sporty. One minute I am dressed like a motorcycle chick and the next I am snazzed up in a dress and heels. And if you catch me when I’m going grocery shopping, my clothes don’t even match. So with that, I guess my three words would be: eccentric,  adventurous, individualistic.

Real Talk with Nicolette Flaherty, Graphic Designer - AerieWhat does #AerieREAL mean to you?

#AerieREAL is about recognizing your own unique beauty and embracing it. But to me, it goes beyond appearance. You are more than just your hair or smile or your curves or lack of curves. Being real is being yourself. It’s about finding what makes your soul happy and allowing that to help mold who you are. Its about setting goals for yourself, learning, losing & winning. Feeling sadness and feeling happiness. Being real isn’t about being perfect. All the imperfections you are given in life, whether they may be scars and marks or struggles and challenges – all in one way or another make you exactly who you are. And when you remain unapologetic for these things because without them, you wouldn’t be you – then that’s what makes you #AerieREAL.

How to Style the Blanket Scarf

The Bonfire Blanket Scarf is a must-have this season and our two newest colors are exactly what you’ve been waiting for! Jacy from Love, Lenore adds a pop of color to her look with our yellow Softest Bonfire Sweater.

How to Style the Blanket Scarf

“Aerie has been one of my favorite brands since college because of their ultra-soft fabrics, attainable price points, and message of true beauty and acceptance. The Bonfire Sweater and Blanket Scarf are now two of the softest and coziest pieces in my closet!”

How to Style the Blanket Scarf

“I wear mostly neutrals, so this beautiful mustard color is the perfect pop of color for fall. I love the slightly oversized cut because it’s flattering with jeans, but also comfy enough to lounge in at home. I must admit that I own a pretty big collection of scarves, but this blanket scarf is by far the softest I own. It’s comfortable enough to wear all day, and I love that it’s big enough to wrap up in on chilly fall evenings.”

How To: Make Lentil and Sweet Potato Power Salad

Usually when you hear the word salad, you think lunch or a light dinner. But that doesn’t have to be the case! This power salad is filling and packs some serious nutrients. It’s a complete meal featuring greens, veggies, carbs, fat and protein. That’s right: a vegan salad with a TON of protein.

If you weren’t convinced yet, the dressing for this power salad is a great way to bring leftover veggies back to life, so you might want to make a little extra to have later in the week!

Makes 3 to 4 servings

2 tbsp tahini
1 tbsp agave (or honey)
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 tsp olive oil
1/4 tsp salt

1 cup lentils (cooked according to package directions)
1 can chickpeas (rinsed and drained)
3 small sweet potatoes
1 pint cherry tomatoes
6 cups mixed greens (we used kale and spinach)
1 bell pepper
1 tbsp olive oil
1/4 tsp salt

1] Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2] Cube the sweet potatoes.

sweet pots

3] Spread the sweet potato cubes and chickpeas on the baking sheet, drizzle on the olive oil and sprinkle on the salt. Give the sweet potatoes and chickpeas a quick stir to ensure that they are seasoned, and pop them in the oven.

4] Bake at 350 for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are soft.

5] Measure out and cook the lentils according to the package directions. Once they’re finished cooking, set them aside to cool.

6] Combine all ingredients for the dressing into a small bowl and whisk thoroughly. The dressing will have a thick consistency, great if you want more of a sauce. If you prefer a thinner dressing (which we recommend), whisk in 1 tsp of water at a time, repeating until you reach your desired consistency.

7] Dice the bell pepper and halve the tomatoes.

8] Wash the greens and remove any stems. Chop or tear the greens into smaller, bite-sized pieces and layer them in the bottom of a bowl.

9] Top the mixed greens with the veggies, lentils and chickpeas, drizzle on your dressing and EAT UP!
