At the first sign of Fall, we’re always reaching for a flannel. The flannel is Fall’s most essential shirt, a style we come back to year after year – it’s a cold weather staple that’s versatile and always on-trend. The great thing about flannels is their ability to shift purpose based on the style you’re going for. They can be the base of your look or act as an accessory to an outfit, just by switching up a few key details. Because of that, you can get tons of wear out of just one flannel. Our head stylist, Laura, pulled together three distinct looks each incorporating the same flannel in a different way to help you up your plaid game this season.
LOOK 1: BUTTONED-UP EDGE
In this outfit, your flannel acts as the base which the look is built on. To give the outfit just the right amount of edge, pair your flannel with eye-catching over-the-knee boots and a black wrap mini skirt. To soften the look, throw a mock neck sweater over your flannel.
STYLE TIPS: leave the collar of the flannel under the neck of the sweater to keep the look clean; push the sleeves of the sweater up so the flannel peeks out; choose a sweater in a neutral color that matches back to one of the shades in your flannel.
LOOK 2: AROUND-THE-WAIST GRUNGE
This 90s-inspired look is one we can’t get enough of. Throw it back to a different era by tying your flannel around your waist. Keep the rest of the look monochrome to make the flannel really pop! Pairing the flannel with hi-rise destructed jeggings, a cropped, tie-front shirt, and buckled ankle booties will take your grunge look to new heights.
STYLE TIPS: make sure the flannel and the top are similarly colored to tie the look together; pair hi-rise jeggings with the flannel around your waist, as the jeans at a spot just a bit higher than where the flannel sits.
LOOK 3: TOP LAYER COOL
In this look, we’re using the flannel as a top layer and accent piece. Here, we’re throwing the flannel over a slip dress and white tee, and adding a surprise element to the look by mixing prints in the dress and flannel. Plus, this little trick will make it look like your look took hours to plan! Finish the outfit off with tan ankle booties for an effortless feel.
STYLE TIP: Be sure your mixed prints share at least one similar color but ideally two or more; keep the tee under your slip dress a neutral white so the look isn’t overwhelming.
