You may have heard Michelle Chamuel’s powerful and upbeat voice on in store Aerie playlists. Or, you may have been introduced to the spunky and pretty hilarious gal two years ago on The Voice. No matter where you discovered the talented artists, you know you’re lucky you did. We sat down with Michelle to talk about music, #AEOSTYLE and what she values in life (hint: being happy, healthy and honest are qualities she values most). Take a look at our exclusive AEO interview below and get to know a bit more about Ms. Chamuel.
AEO: Please introduce yourself, where you’re originally from and how you got your start in music.
Michelle: Hi! I’m Michelle Chamuel. I’m from Massachusetts and I got my start in music by being fascinated with sound, starting from a reeeeaaaalllly early age.
AEO: 2 seasons ago, you were a finalist on The Voice. Tell us about your experience!
Michelle: It’s was a trip! The truth is, what goes on in Reality TV stays in Reality TV…That said, I learned a lot, worked hard, had a great time, made new friends, got my butt kicked by all the new things I was learning, got a stronger butt as a result, and now am on that cycle all over again. I think that’s what life is about, eh?
AEO: Was there a specific artist, band or album that’s influenced your path in music?
Michelle: There are many! Imogen Heap, Ella Fitzgerald, Max Martin, Christina Aguilera, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Burial, and Usher – to name a few.
AEO: Where is your favorite place to perform?
Michelle: In a well loved and considered, sound-treated space designed for listening.
AEO: Funniest or most embarrassing moment on the road?
Michelle: This one time, my band didn’t have much money at all and we were sleeping 8 of us in one motel room in Texas. In order to save time and be discreet, two of us climbed out the window in order to get back to our bus. The motel owner saw two of leave through the window and began shrieking that she would call the sheriff. We made a speedy getaway onto the highway before the angry motel owner could make good on her word but didn’t realize that our back trailer door was open, exposing hundreds of dollars of our valuable gear to being smashed. We thankfully caught this pretty early on, and it was a miracle that the drum hardware bag acted like a door, keeping the gear in. We immediately pulled over, closed the door, and continued our epic journey home. And that was just the beginning of that crazy trip…
AEO: Biggest pet peeve?
Michelle: When one is not accountable for being mindless and the resulting harmful actions, as well as a lack of desire to improve on this. To sum it up: negatively based apathy.
AEO: Describe your everyday #AEOStyle
Michelle: There’s this 100% cotton hoodie I got from you guys that I rock a lot. It’s quite comfy.
AEO: What advice would you give to someone wanting to get into the music industry?
Michelle: There’s always something new to learn. Work on being an open, happy, healthy, and honest person. Be good to yourself and others, because the thoughts you think and the actions you take become who you are. No amount of followers, or money, or award, or whatever is more important that this. Try to remember what really matters, because success is a subjective thing, while the other stuff isn’t.
AEO: We heard you were at SXSW. What are some of your favorite parts of this festival?
Michelle: SXSW feels like some sort of bizarre family reunion of extended family members I never knew I had. All these artists and musicians are coming together, and for several days leading up to it, you can see this fleet of school busses, 15 pass vans, Prevosts, stuffed cars, Winnebagos, etc – all making their way from around the world to Austin, TX and it’s great!
AEO: Congrats on your debut album! Where can someone find out more about what you’re up to?
Michelle: Thanks!! Yeah! You can check out my album, Face The Fire, which came out this February on iTunes, Amazon, and additional online stores, as well as get updates from my Facebook page. I’m really excited to be making music and wear comfortable clothing!!!
