Cargo shorts.. a must have staple for every guy’s closet for spring and summer year after year.  American Eagle Outfitters has so many fits and colors of the cargo short that it may be overwhelming to pick the perfect pair for you. So we reached out to our men’s shorts designer, Ernesto Fernandez to talk everything..cargo shorts!

Name:

Ernesto Fernandez

Can you tell us about the history of our cargo shorts?

Cargo shorts are an interpretation of real military garments and have become a signature piece for AEO.

AEO is one of the leaders in the Market for Cargo Shorts, historically we have provided multiple fits, details and price points for a broad customer base. There is a cargo short for every one out there.

Has the fabric we used changed over the years? Can you tell us how?

We have used twill cotton cloth for cargo shorts and cotton ripstop for our ripstop cargo. Fabric has changed in weight, we are lighter now than where we have been before, moving with the [fashion industry] market trends.

Any cool prints or colors you love this season?

I love the new neutrals such as Honey, Khaki Uniform, Mushroom and Shooting Olive and our Officer Camo is just the right print to have.

What is your favorite cargo short design?

I really like our new slim fit light weight cargo short  because it has a more taper, slim leg. This will be new for July 2014.

cargo_shorts_blog

We also asked our Director of Styling, Preston to share his favorite shorts this season.

1. AEO77 Cargo Short

2. Camp Cargo Short

3. Americana Cargo Short

4. Belted Camo Cutoff Short

What is the styling inspiration behind cargo shorts?

Traditional military garments..now incorporating work-wear and utility influences as well.

Why are cargo shorts a staple year after year?

Because it is a short that is versatile and comfortable and accommodate to so many situations. Our guy can dress it down with a T-shirt or a tank or dress it up with a button down shirt.

If you could recommend the one cargo short that every guy should have in his closet this season, which one would you suggest?

I’d like that to be the new light weight Slim.

What made you want to pursue textile design?

I was always drawn to texture and detail and looks at clothes ever since I can remember…my fathers’ jacket’s or mom’s coats. Also, clothing is such a personal purchase decision…when a guy picks one of our designs, we actually touch his world and everyday life.

What kind of projects do you find yourself working on from day to day?

Designing and making sure our product looks right at every stage of the approval process…from concept to fit, to color, to great product in the store.

Describe yourself:

Passionate,  a bit too much into detail!

Favorite destination:

Greece…so far.

Favorite quote:

“Treat others the way you’d like to be treated”

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Live life to it’s fullest because it’s too short and be happy.

Any the advice you’d offer aspiring technical designers?

Explore, be hands-on, challenge yourself, experiment and be true to yourself.

AEO Designer Interview: Sarah Cassar

AEO Designer Interview: Sarah Cassar

It’s swim season — and we are loving the fun prints on our swimwear this season! We interviewed Sarah Cassar, one of our women’s swimwear designers in our New York Design Office to tell us what inspired the print trends for spring. We also got an insight into her style and what pieces she recommends for Spring.

Name:

Sarah Cassar

sarah rooftop 1

Sarah enjoying the sun on her NYC rooftop

Occupation:

Associate Designer: Swimwear and Dresses

Where are you from:

Sleepy Hollow, NY

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what inspired all the swim trends this season?

I’ve always been an artistic and sporty person so designing clothing for young, fun active people is a perfect fit! I like to design things that I also want to wear. It’s great working for a company like American Eagle Outfitters, because it’s a lifestyle that I want to be a part of.

For swim, I like to have a few different suit options depending on what I am doing. I like scuba diving and my fiancé is teaching me how to surf so I need a couple suits that won’t fall off in a big wave. But I also love wearing a bathing suit as a layering piece in the summer even if you aren’t at the beach! So I need a couple fashion pieces that just look really sexy under a loose tank top.

The best way to get inspired for swim is to get out and do stuff! I like to see what people are wearing and how they are styling them. I’ve been to over 30 different countries so traveling has always been important to me. My recent beach trips have been to the islands off northern Columbia, Belize and the Cayman Islands.

This year we wanted to capture a few different stories. We have a tropical, festival, retro-femme, and black/white story to cover all the great trends that are happening. The best part of designing swim is working with our CAD (computer aided design aka pattern designers) team on the patterns. Swim patterns should always be bright, sunny, clean and cute! Swim is never serious, it always should be fun and happy. That’s the way I like to live my life-thinking about or being at the beach!

What do you love most about working in a creative field?

Our office! These people are the best to work with. Our production team, Kyla and Nia, always keep me laughing.

Any upcoming vacations planned that you are excited about?

I’m getting married this year and we are going on a Safari for our Honeymoon. We are still researching the best place to go in Africa. I’ve never been and there are so many options! I’d love to also go to Morocco and the Galapagos Islands.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Someone once said that our generation will have four different careers, so go ahead and try new things and don’t be afraid to start over. I switched from Merchandising to Design and it was the right move for me!

And the advice you’d offer aspiring designers?

Push the envelope with your designs then pull it back just one step.

Three items on your AEO wish list -

1. Our woven printed easy layering dress—it makes a great beach cover up that you can wear on and off the shore!

2. The lace crossback tank, its great to wear to a concert or festival.

3. AEO Swim! I love our tropical pineapple prints (in-stores in April), they are so fun and fresh!

SarahWishlist

Five items every girl should have this season-

1. A bottom layer that’s okay to show- Wear a swimsuit off the beach or one of our cute lacy bralettes that are made to be seen.

2. A match back outfit–doesn’t matter if it’s with a skirt, pants, or romper.

3. A flirty dress–it has to warm up sometime soon in NY!

4. Delicate jewelry–fine piece are very feminine.

5. Really good friends to spend the summer with!

Where do you find inspiration?

Everywhere: friends, blogs, Pinterest, travel and nature. It’s important to combine inspiration from all over! When I see something that’s amazing, I make sure to make it feel new. Either I bring it together with other elements that are unexpected or use it in a new way.

FLOWER MARKET COLUMBIA

Wedges or Flats?

It’s a coin toss! I have a closet full of heels but they just don’t work for a girl on the go.

Twitter or Instagram?

Dog Name:

Pinky Pie

Dog Age:

Nine

Dog Breed:

Chihuahua

Tricks for Treats?

Will sit, lay down, roll over (multiple times in a row), give paw and hi-five for beef dog treats

Why did you think your dog would be a good model for our newest line?

She’s itty bitty and everyone she meets seems to fall in love with her instantly. She’s super friendly and loves being around other people. She’s also used to being dressed up – she has tons of clothes and occasionally even wears nail paw-lish.

IMG_0786

Pinkie Pie in her glory in a sea of clothes

What are your dog’s favorite places to hang out? Anywhere I am or where there is a pillow or blanket for her to cuddle up to.  She’s the best cuddler ever!

Does your dog have any shameful secrets?

She’s sneaky!!! If you take your eyes off of her for a SECOND she’ll do bad things – unwrap presents under the tree, tear up the garbage, eat thru a box of k-cups, eat half a bag of chocolate covered coffee beans! She can’t help herself when she smells food.

What’s your dog’s most embarrassing moments?

Sometimes, I put boots on her and she hates them. She will freeze. Not even a treat can get her to move.

What is your dog’s favorite outfit to wear?

She’s a sweater girl. She likes to be cozy – especially if it’s pink!

Would you recommend American Beagle Outfitters to other dogs?

OF COURSE. She’s so excited to be in the campaign with her friends Carson and Lottie Moon. They’re telling everyone they know.

Is your dog single or attached?

She’s a single lady.

Ride in the car vs. Walk in the park?

Car all the way! She loves going for long drives to visit her cousins in West Virginia. When we get close to their house she can tell and gets super excited!

Rope vs. Fetch?

Neither. Sleep!

Favorite treat?

Canine Carryout Beef Treats. Or any cat food she can sneak from her sister or people food she can weasel out of her mama.

What’s your best memory with your dog?

There are so many. She’s been around for all the big things – she went to college with me; she traveled to NY with me while I was recording an album, she traveled to Portland with me for an American Eagle Outfitters photo shoot and she was there when I met the guy I’ll marry this summer (she pooped in his shoe the first time she met him. She had to show him who was boss!!)

Why did you pick this specific dog?

She was so tiny and adorable and I couldn’t resist her big shiny eyes. She weighed one pound and fit in my hand when I first got her.

Is the dog an only child?

She has a sister named Coco who is a cat and they’re best friends. They cuddle together in bed (next to me of course).

Does your dog bite or lick the mailman?

Barks.

Nappers vs Players?

Naps, all day, every day!

What words does she know?

Sit, Laydown, Roll, Gimme Paw, Hi Five, Food, Treat, Go Outside, Go for Ride, Get up in Bed, Cagey, Under (what I say when I want her to get under the covers and cuddle up, Potty.

Does she prefer mud or baths?

Baths – she’s a girly girl.

Describe your dog’s personality in 5 words-

Chill, Sweet, Cuddly, Protective, Alpha

Who are your dog’s best friends? Any neighborhood animals?

She likes hanging out with Lottie Moon and Carson when they can fit it in their schedules. Emma and Murphy are her cousins she loves.

Where does your dog sleep?

Right next to me… as close as she can possibly get.

What’s your sleeping style? Don’t disturb the dog, or don’t disturb me?

I’ll be uncomfortable if it helps her stay cozy. Sometimes though if I roll over and move the blankets, she tends to go flying across the bed. She’s so small.

Is there anything your dog won’t do?

She’ll do it but she doesn’t like swimming. She also hates the vacuum and hides every time.

Does your dog have any favorite TV shows?

She watches a lot of Food Network with her mama; anything involving food is fine by her.

What makes your dog bark?

If she hears a noise while I’m home, she barks to protect me. If it’s vice versa and she’s home with AJ and I’m the one that makes the noise, she doesn’t even bother trying to protect him. She loves me most.

What is the funniest thing that your dog does?

Her tongue sticks out when she’s super relaxed. It’s cute but ugly at the same time. I love it.

How would you describe your personal style?

Usually casual. I’m most always in denim and a tee or tank with flip flops (at least in the Spring and Summer since the weather here is nuts).

What is your dog’s #AEOStyle?

A little flashier than her mama’s – she loves dresses, embellished sweaters and anything sparkly. Bonus points if it’s pink.

What do you think of your dog’s outfit?

If I could’ve chosen an outfit for her myself that would’ve been the one. I love how trendy the jumper is – both the fit and the black and white print. And I love that this is something different for her versus her usual T or sweatshirt.

IMG_0777

Supermodel status

When you heard American Eagle Outfitters was coming up with a clothing line, what were your first thoughts?

It’s such a fun idea. I love that I can shop for myself and come home with a present for her too.

Where would your dog wear American Beagle Outfitters?

Everywhere. Especially to the park or parties so she can show off her new style to her friends.

What would be the perfect look for you to match your dog?

I’d love to see us both in destroyed T’s, jeans and sunglasses. That’s our favorite go-to look.
