Meet Dilinus H., Men’s Denim Buyer for American Eagle Outfitters. Read on to learn more about what it’s like to be a buyer for AEO.
How did you discover your passion for fashion?
I was always the kid in college that people went to for advice on what to wear to interviews, formals and date parties. After a while I realized fashion was something I was really good at and enjoyed. I never really thought about buying as a career though.
How did you get your start as a buyer?
I was interning for General Electric in their Consumer Finance department and met someone from a major department store while there. We spoke about how I really wished I was working in a more creative field that still had a strong business aspect. I was encouraged to interview at that company for their Assistant Buyer Training Program. I moved to New York City after college to work for them and after eight months realized that I wanted to work at a retailer that owned the whole product life cycle so I interviewed at AEO. I have been here since.
What’s the coolest place you’ve traveled for your job?
This past April I went to Coachella for trend spotting trip.
What is your dream job?
I’m doing it!
What other cool places have you traveled to?
I studied abroad the first semester of my senior year of college in London and did a lot of awesome traveling then. My favorite places by far were Barcelona and Prague. I also spent a day living on a Sheep farm in Sweden that had no electricity or running water – definitely something that was cool to experience but you only need to do once!
What is next on your ‘To Do In Life’ list?
Travel to South America. I studied aboard in Europe and have already been to Africa and Asia, so it’s the only big continent left. Antarctica is out of the question!
Where do you find your inspiration?
I spend a good amount of time on blogs but I prefer to just people watch on the street.
What trend are you most excited about for Holiday?
What AEO jean fit do you live in?
What is your favorite look with jeans?
What are some of your favorite bands or artists?
My music tastes are pretty much a combination of Top 40 and R&B. The last three albums I bought were Drake, Ariana Grande and Janelle Monae. This summer I saw Allen Stone at Stage AE and had a blast! I definitely listened to his album for the rest of the summer.
Besides fashion, what are your other interests?
Tennis, watching sports, traveling, hanging with friends… the normal 20-something stuff!
