Grunge is one of the most influential trends of the past few decades. But you may be wondering how the trend originated—and why it’s now more relevant than ever! Grunge emerged in the 90’s, inspired by the raw, messy music scene of the Pacific Northwest (think Nirvana, Sonic Youth and Pearl Jam). Oversized flannels, Birkenstocks, babydoll dresses, thick wool socks … grunge was basically all about looking like you slept in your clothes and didn’t really care what you were wearing. Designers like Marc Jacobs (then designer for Perry Ellis) and Anna Sui are credited with some of the earliest translations of the grunge movement into the fashion world.

And now grunge is back and better than ever. This season, we’re turning the trend on its head by introducing glam elements. The requisite flannels and babydoll dresses are here, yes – but they’re reinvented in bolder hues and slimmer fits. It’s all about giving a nod to the past but making it completely new and fresh. Here are the looks we’re really loving from the latest glam grunge trend.

Glam Grunge

The anorak is a must-have if you want to work the grunge trend right. Add a bold statement T-shirt and a pretty patterned skirt for a girly feel. Then finish with buckled boots and the season’s coolest hat, the slouchy beanie.

Updated Grunge

Let’s be honest … you just really can’t do grunge justice if you don’t buy at least one flannel shirt this season. Start with a simple hi-lo tank and faded grey jeans, then tie the flannel around your waist for a more literal take on the trend. Studded motorcycle boots really kick this look into high gear.

Iconic Glam

The babydoll dress is one of the most iconic glam-inspired pieces. We’re loving it in a preppy floral paisley print, especially when teamed with our bestselling sweatshirt jean jacket (also one of the season’s biggest trends). Studded and buckled motorcycle boots take this look effortlessly from class to date night.
