Aerie Friends and Family: Katie B., Buyer, Aerie.

Meet Katie, a Buyer of Bras and Swim for Aerie.com. Katie works with cross functional teams to ensure that we have the best products ready for you to purchase when shopping online. Read on to learn more about Katie and her job.

What is your dream job?

I just love being a buyer. My friends sometimes laugh when I say that this is my dream job, but after college I worked in a different field and knew that something didn’t feel complete for me. I knew that I loved fashion, but based on my experience wouldn’t be qualified for a job. I applied for a Fashion Merchandising program at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC, and once I was accepted the choice was made. It was such a meaningful experience going back to school and knowing how important it was to me to have a job that was more of a passion. The best part of being a buyer is being able to use both sides of your brain – the creative and analytical.

Katie’s creativity is valuable at work and her personal life. Check out her inspiration board for her wedding.

What is next on your “To Do In Life” list?

Get married! I am marrying my best friend of almost 9 years in December! I’m hoping it snows a little so that it feels like a winter wonderland! Then we are going on our honeymoon to Hawaii and spending the holidays together there. Neither of us have ever been there and cannot wait to relax but also try new things… maybe surf!? I am so excited for this next chapter to start in my life!

Katie and her soon to be Husband, Jason!

What song is playing on repeat in your speakers right now?

Having just gone to two music festivals in the past month (Coachella and Jazz Fest in New Orleans), I have a super eclectic mix of music happening right now. I always find that after I see a band I cannot stop listening to them, so Spotify is my best friend. I saw Two Door Cinema Club at Coachella, who I’ve been dying to see for a few years, and they were fantastic. At Jazz Fest you get such an exposure to such an array of musicians, from Phoenix to Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Fleetwood Mac and gospel, that you come back from the experience wanting to listen to every genre possible. The Cold War Kids‘ latest album, Dear Miss Lonelyhearts, is fantastically fun and upbeat – perfect for driving with the windows down when the sun is shining!

What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?

I have to say, Coldplay’s last tour was incredible! I went to the show in Tampa last year and the energy was amazing. They gave out bracelets when you entered that lit up with the beat of the music and took the show to a whole new level. Chris Martin just gives so much of himself in every performance that you can’t help but get lost in the moment when you’re at a Coldplay concert.

The best concert Katie’s been to? Coldplay

How does your work influence your style?

I love seeing what coworkers are wearing in a new, innovative way. I also love that we have a relaxed work attire, which allows for people to be super creative with their style.

What trend are you most excited about this season?

I love white woven pieces. From dresses to tunics, touches of cutout details and lace are my favorite!

What Aerie bra do you live in?

I’m a lightly lined girl for sure. I love the festival bandeau for summer paired with some of the Aerie low back tanks. Oh! And I love Sofie too! Can we also discuss how amazing our bralettes are? They are so soft and comfy – you could literally live in them!

What characteristics make your job fun?

The eclectic mix of people I get to work with every day. They make me laugh all the time, and that’s my favorite part. We tend to get a little silly when we stay late, so it makes the day go faster!

Behind the Lens: Project Live Your Life Photo Shoot

Behind the Lens: Project Live Your Life Photo Shoot

Project Live Your Life will be back this July. We’re looking for inspirational people doing cool things to become part of the AE brand. Get inspired to enter Project Live Your Life by reading a photo shoot testimonial from Frankie, a singer from Vancouver, Canada and a member of our Back to School Cast.

My experience with the American Eagle Outfitters Back to School 2013 photo shoot was truly once in a lifetime. Since I was coming to New York City from London, England, I was the last cast member to arrive and I will never forget the moment I walked into the studio. I was greeted by 20 loud, crazy, beautiful, loving, and friendly Americans who welcomed me with open arms. It was a quick hello and directly up to my fitting where I got to try on all the outfits I would be wearing for the shoot.

Frankie posing with his new friends underneath the Brooklyn Bridge.

Getting to meet all of the cast and crew from American Eagle was truly unforgettable. Everyone had their own unique style, background, and story. Together we would make up one heck of a reality TV show cast or more appropriately, one amazing AE Family.

When I was taken to my first photo shoot location on the streets of NYC, I realized that I had really become part of the AE brand. I was humbled, and so excited to get to shoot in one of my favorite places in the entire world. I smiled, I hopped, and I spun around as New York City passersby watched me as I got to experience one of the coolest things of my life.

Overall it was a thrill, I met some amazing people, and I left inspired to continue to do amazing things and continue to propel my career forward. Thank you so much to American Eagle Outfitters for making this Canadian kid’s dreams come true.

Weekend Getaways: Savannah, GA

Weekend Getaways: Savannah, GA

Savannah is one of our favorite vacation spots on the East Coast. No matter if you’re looking for a cultural, beach or foodie getaway, Savannah has something to offer for everyone. Read on for our favorite haunts in the Paris of the South.

Pack

Savannah gets a little steamy in the summer to say the least. How can you stay looking cool in the heat? Girls, pair a maxi dress with strappy sandals for an easy, elegant look. Guys, get the signature Southern preppy look with the AE Denim Shorts in a khaki color paired back with the AE Striped Short Sleeve Button-Down. Shade yourself with a hat and sunglasses and keep your feet comfy with a pair of simple canvas sneakers.

What to pack for your Savannah getaway!

Eat

Anyone who has ever heard of Paula Dean or low country cooking knows Savannah, like the rest of the south, has a rich food culture.  Our don’t-miss eating experience is Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room, a converted boarding house turned family-style restaurant. Everyday features fried chicken and over fifteen sides brought to the table, as well as your choice of sweet tea or lemonade and a homemade dessert.

If you’re in City Market, stop by Firefly Cafe and grab a table outside. Try the corn chowder with crab meat or dressed up mac ‘n cheese. You can’t leave Savannah without a traditional low country boil, so head out to Bobo Seafood Market to fill up on shrimp, blue crab, sausage, potatoes, and corn boiled in a secret seasoning.

Don’t miss the pralines at River Street Sweets. Grab a warm free sample to munch on while you browse for gifts to take home to family and friends. Sweet tooth still not satisfied? Stop by Leopold’s Ice Cream for a secret-recipe scoop that has been in use since 1935.

Do

Spend some time sorting through Paris Market, a smorgasbord of antiques and relics from European flea markets and estate sales. Find items ranging from an entire museum’s bird collection to glassware to one of a kind jewelry. Afterwards, explore the 21 blocks of Savannah’s historic downtown district and check out the 250 year old trees perpetually draped with Spanish Moss.

In the mood for a little paranormal activity? Savannah offers over 30 ghost tours, including a haunted pub crawl. Plus, don’t miss stops at the Mercer Williams House, immortalized in Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil, and the Bonaventure Cemetery, the final resting place for artists, writers, and historical heroes from the past 150 years.

Craving the sun and surf? Head to Tybee Island, a quick 20 minute drive from Savannah. Whether you want to surf, kayak, or just relax on the beach, Tybee Island is the perfect getaway from the Savannah heat and crowds. Refuel at Sundae Cafe, a former ice cream shop turned restaurant along First Street, which serves up seafood in every way imaginable. Try the sushi nachos or seafood cheesecake.

If you’re itching for a little Civil War history, stop by Fort Pulaski on your drive to or from Tybee Island. Even if you aren’t a history buff, you’ll enjoy walking around the brick fortress and taking in the views of the Low Country.

AE Festival Guide: Bonaroo

AE Festival Guide: Bonaroo

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Bonnaroo is the spark that brought the summer music festival back in fashion. Spread out over four days in June on a 700-acre farm in Tennessee, what once began as a folk festival has expanded to include acts as legendary as Kanye West, Radiohead, and Bruce Springsteen. Bonnaroo can be overwhelming for a first timer, but our seasoned festival goers have created a guide to help you navigate like a pro.

What to Wear

With shows all day and all night, there won’t be much time for wardrobe changes between sets. Destroyed festival shorties and a bright colored sweater tank are two pieces that work for anything and everything Bonnaroo has to offer. We recommend layering a bright bikini underneath to help you stay cool when the sun gets hot. Keep things festival-friendly with bold, boho accessories like a beaded headband and statement necklace. Fringed booties and a studded backpack add a little edge to finish off the look.

Bob Saget FT. Jared Logan and the Improvised Shakespeare Company:  You might remember Bob from Full House or America’s Funniest Home Videos, but what you may not know is that he has been doing outlandish stand up comedy for over 30 years.  Check out his darker sense of humor when you enter the comedy tent on Sunday.

AE Friends & Family: Kelly L., Corporate Strategy Associate

AE Friends & Family: Kelly L., Corporate Strategy Associate

Meet Kelly L., Corporate Strategy Associate at American Eagle Outfitters. Kelly and her team help the AEO executive team create long term strategies, visions and core values. Read on to learn more about Kelly’s journey and career.

How did you get your start in corporate strategy?

My first job after college was at a bank helping companies buy and sell other companies. During my time there I had a lot of fun hearing executives talk about their companies’ vision and long term strategies, so much that I decided I wanted strategics to be my next job! Luckily, our Corporate Strategy team was just getting started and was hiring, and I happened to get in touch with the right people. It’s been a great journey since!

Kelly and her team at the recent AE Community Day in NYC.

What is a typical day like for you?

What I love about my job is that there is no typical day! Depending on the project, I could be out in the streets of Manhattan looking at different innovative business ideas or building a financial model for a new initiative.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I love working with different departments and learning about the business from multiple angles, so that’s why I am here. What makes my job truly enjoyable is that I work with some of the smartest, most-inspiring and well-balanced people in the industry from whom I learn every day. Recently my team inspired me to become healthier by taking part in the Pittsburgh Half Marathon. It was a big accomplishment!

Kelly crossing the finish line at the Pittsburgh Half-Marathon.

What is your favorite AE Jean Fit?

Jeggings are definitely my favorite. I have three pairs in Dark Destroy, Purple and Black. They’re so versatile and flattering no matter what you wear with them!

Where is the coolest place you have traveled for your job?

I’m super excited about an upcoming trip to Asia! Although I lived there for a few years before college, it’ll be interesting to go back with a different mindset and purpose.

Does your work influence your personal style?

I don’t typically deal with merchandise, but just working for an apparel retailer has made me more aware of trends. We also have a casual dress code at the office, which has definitely allowed me to explore my own style during the weekday. My friends have commented that I look like an AE mannequin!

You were born in Brazil, grew up in Brazil and Taiwan, and went to college in the US. Do you think these cultural differences influence you?

Over the years I’ve become a blend of all three cultures. In fact Taiwanese people think I’m American, Brazilians think I’m Taiwanese and Americans think I’m Brazilian! Luckily New York is a pretty diverse city and I can always find activities and foods to satisfy my three nationalities. I have really strong Brazilian and Asian food cravings, so I make frequent trips to Astoria, Chinatown and Flushing.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I find inspiration in people, either through personal connections or stories. Extraordinary acts – small and big – happen every day. I try to stop to recognize them and let them inspire me.

Who or what has influenced you most in life?

My parents. My “struggles” as a young adult are so trivial compared to what they went through as Taiwanese immigrants to Brazil in their 20s… It really helps me put things into perspective.

Kelly and her parents in NYC.

What is next on your life to-do list?

Find a nice and affordable apartment in New York… And dedicate more time to a charitable cause!

What’s on your summer playlist?

I’ve gotten more interested in EDM (electronic dance music) lately, so I’ve been catching up on some of my favorite artists’ songs and mixes.
