Aerie Friends & Family: Jean D., Designer of Aerie Swim & Sleep

Meet Jean D., Designer of Aerie Swim & Sleep. We sat down with Jean to learn everything from how she found her passion for designing clothing to her amazing summer 2013 adventures. Read on to learn more!

How did you discover your passion?

I grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina surrounded by a slew of interesting teachers, writers, artists, and athletes.  I worked in the costume shop at the University of North Carolina when I was in high school and found an amazing mentor who really helped to guide me throughout my path in design.

How did you get your start as designer?

I was the ultimate intern.  I had 6 internships throughout college- working everywhere from textile design to fashion design, and had a really amazing opportunity to work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute for two summers.  My first job out of school was at Ralph Lauren in the New York City, designing children’s sweaters.

Who or what has been the most important influence in your life?

My Grandmother taught my how to cross-stitch when I was a kid, and her creativity was certainly passed onto me.  She grew up in eastern Massachusetts and is a true New Englander… and I am so interested in my family history because of her!

What is your dream job?

I would love to have a teeny tiny shop- the type of neighborhood shop where people just stop by to say hello and hang out.

What is next on your ‘To Do In Life’ list?

Travel!  My boyfriend and I and a bunch of friends are going to Sicily at the end of the summer.  We rented this ancient stone house on the beach.  We are going to live in our bathing suits, straw hats and eat like the locals for a week!

What song is playing on repeat in your speakers right now?

I just got back from New Orleans’ Jazz Fest where I was totally inspired by the local music.   Music is literally everywhere there!  I heard this local band Panorama Jazz Band- they play some wacky instruments and provide the perfect soundtrack to a low-key weekend.

How would you describe your style?

Super classic and easy.  I have found the perfect pair of high waisted skinny jeans, paired with polka dots and my Nina Z clogs, and I’m ready for the day!

How does your work influence your style?

I don’t think I wore the color pink until I started working here!  Our office is so casual- it’s all about pretty style and being yourself!

Which Aerie bra do you live in?

Audrey!  Love her in vintage lace!  I am working on a swim version of her because she’s such a pretty shape!

What characteristics make your job fun?

I often travel for my job and have had the opportunity to see the world!  From antique markets to Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janerio, I love being inspired by different cultures and bringing that inspiration to my work!

Name some of your favorite spots in NYC.

I spend almost every weekend in Brooklyn Bridge Park at Smorgasburg- a local food market!  On a sunny day, there isn’t a better spot in the city! Brooklyn Bowl is awesome for music and bowling!  And the Ace Hotel has the best coffee, cocktails and oysters!

This summer, we’re introducing three lengths in our Men’s Board Shorts. You can choose from 10″, 8″ or and 6″ inseams. Our board shorts are made from our quick-drying microfiber and can be styled for anything you’ll be doing this summer — from hanging by the pool and surfing at the beach to rocking out at a music festival. We asked our AE.com Men’s Merchandise Manager Bryan N. to give us the lowdown on the newest styles.

Our classic 10” inseam board short hits right at the knee. It’s the classic board short length you’ll find from any surf brand. This style fits perfectly into our festival trend. Pair it with a cool tee or tank for a classic summer look.

This is our brand new 8” inseam board short, which hits right above the knee. It’s a bit preppier and is perfect for that guy who doesn’t want a longer, roomier board short. We love it because it’s casual enough to wear while you grab a bite to eat or when hit the beach for the day.

The brand new 6” inseam board short hits a couple inches above the knee. It’s a really comfortable short and doesn’t show off too much thigh. It’s also super preppy, and the trend in swim is definitely going much shorter. We outfit this head turning style with a short sleeve button-down or a V-neck tee.
