Men’s Design & Color Inspiration
“When researching Spring 13, we as a Concept team were seeing a strong presence of nautical influences in runway shows, magazine editorials, and fashion blogs. We wanted to take these trends and make them more relevant for our AE guy. This is how we came up with the idea of Coast Guard Cool – a new take on American Nautical dressing.
Using Coast Guard Cool as our big idea, we set about finding color inspiration. Our color palette for Spring 2013 was inspired by these amazing vintage nautical flags that we found in the Pacific Northwest. The flags were used during WWII and have the coolest colors: from indigo washed navy to lifeguard red, nautical yellow to sailcloth white.
We also love neon for Spring 13. The Olympic Games were filled with bright neon hues and this active inspiration influenced our palette. We thought it was so fresh and new to add traditional colors like navy, and contrast them against new bright neons. These neons add a cool and unexpected pop to striped sweaters and graphic tees.”
-Keith G., Men’s Senior Manager of Color & Concept
“Coast Guard Cool was inspired by the Men’s Spring/Summer Runway shows. The general mood from the majority of the shows were described as “Coast Guard Cool”. Coast Guard Cool is perfect for AE because it’s part of our brand heritage and a part of a larger Americana Heritage trend that’s happening.
Coast Guard Cool is about taking classic nautical items like Breton stripes, indigo denim, relaxed chinos, fisherman sweaters, deck shoes, and nylon parkas and making them modern and youthful. To make Coast Guard Cool new and exciting we are exploring new washes, fabrics and slim fits to the line. In addition, we are adding neon hits and camo prints to add some fun.”

Women’s Design and Color Inspiration:
“Spring 2013 color for the AE girl was influenced by the Spring 12/13 runway shows. We loved the femininity, color-blocking, sorbet brights and candy pastels seen on the runway which inspired our concept called “Sweet Little Things”. You will see a beautiful range of peach to coral, ballet to Barbie pinks, mint to seafoam, electric yellows, and ultra feminine lilacs and lavenders in a variety of silhouettes and fabrications. Our standout favorites would be our feminine color-blocked chiffon tops, mixed eyelet dresses, and our ankle jeggings.
There has also been a strong presence of active and sport influences coming from the street and runway. We pulled inspiration from Spring 12/13 runway shows as well as the Olympics to influence our color for our Luxe Sport concept. You will see hits of neon pops paired back to grounding neutrals as well as primary brights, optic white, soft heather greys and graphic black. Bodycon dresses, nylon parkas, fashion fleece and a range of luxe tees will have active touches that include mesh fabric blocking, pop bindings/tipping, and zippers.
Our last color story is called “Boho Daze” to get you geared up for an early getaway or Spring Break. Inspired again by Spring 12/13 runway shows, sand, khaki, deep burgundy, black and vintage ivory keep this trend earthy and grounded, while camo and olive give it a military edge. Electric lemon-lime, washed magenta and melon give this concept just the right eclectic pop to keep it modern. Fringe details, scenic photoreal graphic tees, embroidered tops and embellished denim festival shorts will make your outfit to any destination.
Everything for Spring’13 pairs back to our light and bright denim perfectly, whether it be a jean, jean shirt or denim dress. We have plenty of silhouettes and washes to outfit your denim dressing needs.”
