How did you discover your passion for concept design?
When I got my start at American Eagle Outfitters I wasn’t sure what I wanted to pursue as a career. I knew that I wanted to work in fashion but I didn’t know how. I started as the receptionist so I could learn the business and I was moved to different departments as an Executive Assistant to the Design Vice Presidents in Men’s, Women’s, and Aerie. It was one of my bosses that asked me what I wanted to do and I said I think I would be great in the concept department. She saw my passion and mentored my growth. Any spare time I had I was working with the concept team just learning, watching, and understanding how the concept team works to create the “soul of the season.” It was fascinating and I knew right then that this was for me.
What does your job entail?
I am at the start of the design cycle. I research color, trend and themes for the upcoming season a year in advance. I help create the color palette, big ideas and key themes that will inspire the designers, merchants and marketing.
Who or what has been the most important influence in your life?
Most important influence would have to be my family. They know me probably better than I know myself. They listen to me and help me make important decisions.
What is your dream job?
Honestly, this is my dream job.
What is next on your ‘To Do In Life’ list?
I’m the kind of person that lives in the moment, so I can’t say I know what I want “to do” next. Life is good and as long as I am happy doing what I am doing then I plan on continuing on this path!
How would you describe your style?
My style is very eclectic. I do love the bohemian chic look but I like to always keep my style classic and clean with a twist. My favorite outfit is jeans and a vintage tee with a cool printed scarf.
How does your work influence your style?
My job is to be up to date on what is trending so I pick my favorite trends and depending on how much I like them, I use them in a big or little way.
Where do you find your inspiration?
Inspiration is everywhere! I love to people watch, see what everyone is wearing and how they put themselves together.
Where is the coolest place you’ve traveled for your job?
I was lucky enough to go to Australia for Spring 2014 inspiration! It was so exciting to see how fashion and trends differ in every country and hemisphere.
Do you have any cool interests or hobbies?
I love to cook and I have a real passion for food! Food Network is always on and if I wasn’t a concept designer, I would want to be a reality chef like Rachel Ray.
Find an Aerie store to check out Jackie’s work!
