Where Has Your AE Been – China

Adero K. is a student at DePaul University and studying Economics and Chinese Language. This summer Adero spent two months in Shanghai, China in an intensive language program. “What is a better excuse to shop at AE then studying abroad?” Adero told us.

Adero (right) and her friend are on a bridge in Nanjing, China. Adero is wearing an AE tank and an Aerie skirt from Spring 2011. Nanjing is the home of Confucius’s temple and she and her friend, Kaylee, spent the day shopping.

One of the highlights from Adero’s summer in China was climbing the Great Wall. The Great Wall is in Northern China, so it is kind of chilly, even in the summer. Adero is wearing an AE hoodie from Summer 2009 and climbed hundreds of steep stairs just to snap that picture.

Has your AE been somewhere equally as fabulous? Send your photos to social@ae.com and you could star in ‘Where Has Your AE Been?’.

Building a Better World

Today we are featuring a guest blog post by Monica Gorman, Senior Director of Corporate Responsibility & International Trade Compliance at AE.

Some kids want to be a movie star or a race car driver when they grow up. I wanted to be Secretary of State.

Crazy, I know. But I grew up in an immigrant family short on cash and long on dreams – especially that quintessential American dream that if you work hard and have a positive attitude, you just might become someone who makes a difference in this world.

Today, I lead the Corporate Responsibility team at American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. It’s not the State Department, but it’s not as different as you might think. One big lesson I’ve learned is that companies have a huge impact on people’s lives all over the world. Whether that impact is good or bad depends a lot on the choices we make as we do business.

That’s why I love what I do.

I work with a team of extraordinary people who have dedicated their careers to making this world a better place. Every day, the AEO Corporate Responsibility team visits factories, talks with people who make our clothes, thinks about how to reduce our impact on the environment, and brainstorms with people in organizations who share our goals. We grapple with economic, social, and political issues facing the apparel industry from Dhaka to Delhi, Shanghai to Hanoi, Guatemala City to Washington, DC.

Over the years, you’ve told us that you’re passionate about these issues too, which is a major reason why we created our first-ever Corporate Responsibility Report – AE Better World. You’ll find a ton of information about how we’re working to improve factories and help the environment, what it’s like to work at AEO, and how we invest in our community.

If you’ve never seen a website like this before, you might be surprised by our open, candid tone. We’ve been pretty honest about the challenges we face and what we’re doing to address them.

The good news is some of the best companies in the world have similar websites. In fact, we believe one of the most effective ways to make progress is by working with our peers in the industry.

So take a look. Ask questions. Let us know what you think. We hope that this will be the beginning of a conversation of ideas – ideas that will help us all live our lives in a better world.

Get Inspired – 100 Years of Fashion

Get Inspired – 100 Years of Fashion

We found this great video that shows the evolution of fashion from 1911 to 2011! Not only do we love seeing all the fashions, but the evolution of dance and music in 100 years is interesting to see as well.

The video can give you little peeps into how things from 25, 50, or even 100 years ago can pop back into fashion today. We spied a lot of lace, the long, flowy boho dresses, and even the boots, blazers, and wedges we still see today.

Check out the video and let us know which era of fashion was your favorite!

The video was made by Westfield Stratford, a shopping center that opened last month in the UK.

Google Wallet Invades AEO Times Square

All month long, AE is giving shoppers in the Times Square store in New York City the opportunity to try the new Google Wallet app!

What is Google Wallet? It’s an app for your smartphone that contains all of your store reward cards (such as AEREWARD$), credit card information, and even special discounts!

AE and Google set up a full experience ‘Tapping Spree’ in Times Square for customers to see Google Wallet in action. When a customer comes in to try Google Wallet, they are loaned a Google Android phone and given a ten dollar AE gift card they can load into their mobile wallet. They can even load their loyalty number into the phone, so it’s automatically applied at check-out, with one tap of the phone at the register.

Customers shop throughout the five floors of our Times Square store, tapping Google wallet signs and discovering special offers that are loaded onto the phone.

Customers who take part in the Tapping Spree at the Times Square store can also get their 15 seconds of fame on our Times Square billboard:

American Eagle customers will have the opportunity to try out Google Wallet at the Times Square store until October 31. American Eagle is the only launch partner that will have the full Google Wallet experience like this!

Old Jeans, New Hope: Week 2

Old Jeans, New Hope: Week 2

In the initial 5 days of our Old Jeans, New Hope denim drive, our customers have donated more than 8,000 pairs of jeans. That’s enough denim to insulate 6 homes! How many more homes can we insulate? 10? 20? 50?

We are accepting jeans until October 18th, so make sure you trade your old jeans in for a great 20% discount and help us insulate some homes!

Here at AE, we were wondering how denim insulation was really made, so our friends at Cotton sent us this really cool video to answer our questions.

Just as a reminder, you can bring in ANY BRAND of denim in ANY CONDITION to any American Eagle store to get 20% off your entire purchase! Bring in your old denim and help AE and Cotton make Old Jeans, New Hope a success!
